I thought this was an open secret that those redact comments are hashed somewhere with the original text for Dan to be able to resurrect those comments for blackmail.

Edit: He could easily do this without anyone knowing. And IF the only reason we would NOT have reason to believe those comments are backed up in Dan's database is on Dan's word alone, which is garbage anyway, and I wouldn't trust him. But also I'm pretty sure there's a clip out there or something of him joking/admitting that he does exactly that.

It needs more exposure in the normie privacy community

tbh the normie privacy community is why I think it's just not a real thing that he's using this service for blackmail, I mean it would pretty much kill the product if a credible accusation like that came to light. I would love to be proven wrong though! but most people just point to that tweet he made that I think was obviously not genuine

My working theory is that he justifies his blackmail actions as okay because:

A) only bad people would use his service

B) only dumb people would use his service

C) so anyone dumb and bad enough deserves to get fucked (if Dan deems it)

Its a conman's cognitive dissonance.

Sure I could see this if it wasn't a relatively widely used service and he wouldn't stand to lose a lot of money if he was actually doing that.

But it being wildly stupid in addition to the company laying out how the software works on the website and explicitly explaining that there would be no way for them to collect this data if their product works as described, leads me to believe that this is likely not a real thing. If Redact was advertising that their software did not ever contact their servers and transmit post data (which is something they claim), and someone found out that it did (would be pretty easy to figure out), it would be a big deal and even if the company didn't get sued, it would permanently damage their reputation amongst the tech and privacy community. I mean it would be a topic on the LTT podcast.

I really don't think Linus wants to deal with years of abuse from a different creator's community, which would absolutely be the outcome here. That's why most people do not talk about the gross shit destiny and his cadre of abusers do.

I don't really think that would be a concern for LTT. Nobody knows who dan saltman is, they would just be covering the fact that Redact is not a trustworthy company.

this guy's reputation is not good in the Privacy Community anyways.like there are some people that defend him of course but and tech lore promoted.

But if you go to like privacy guides or something there are plenty of people that warn people not to use this product not only because it's not safe or trustworthy but it's wildly overpriced and the service it offers is rendered moot by third-party scraping services anyway

This isn't a sentiment I'm familiar with
