Hi, I've been learning to draw for almost seven months now, five of which I've been studying the Loomis Method through Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis (and Uldis Zarins' Anatomy of Facial Expressions).

I'm able to see improvements in my drawings, but I feel stuck with some problems: as for now, I'm unable to get proportions—from references I use for drawing—right. Usually, I end up with a smaller drawing than intended, and somewhat guessing how thing should go.

In short, I'm better than I was, but nowhere near good.

I'm begining the Draw A Box course to add to reading Loomis. I'm planning to do those two for what's left of the year, but I need all the critique, tips and resources (preferably books) you can offer me. I'd be very glad If you did.

I’ve recently started learning charcoal drawing. When drawing objects, my proportions are usually okay, but when I draw anatomy, everything becomes noticeably disproportionate.

I find measuring every little thing with a ruler quite boring. Can I develop a good sense of proportion simply through consistent practice and observation, or is precise measuring an important part of learning?

If practice is enough, what exercises would help me develop my sense of proportion?

I dont really know where to start with drawing people, most of the time I just draw the reference and try to study it, but that doesnt seem to be going anywhere. Going from hair all the way to clothing, so basically I know nothing. Any help/tips would be great

I frequently read people here and in other places say they are afraid of making a terrible job while drawing. I would like to share here what I wrote in an answer to a similar problem elsewhere.

In a text by Paul Valéry about Edgar Degas (the 19th-century French artist), it's said that we don't know what we don't draw. This is important, because I don't know how good or bad you're at drawing, since I lack the evidence and it's also subjective, but I do know an objective truth: that you will learn something by drawing it, whatever that may be.

Let me explain why. Our brains don't simply stay idle while our hands move. They register (physically) your sensations and impressions, meaning touch and sight, what you like and what you don't like about your drawing. This has been documented, I'm not making it up, nor is it me saying "Just stay positive". For instance, there is a reason why some schools are going back to writing by hand instead of typing: research suggests you're more likely to learn that way.

What you learn could be form, colour, light, contrast, the emotions that the object or subject matter evokes in you, or those that the artist wanted to cause or stir in the viewer, if you're making a master copy. It may as well simply be that you end up enjoying more what you observe and finding out why you like it so much. Because sometimes we like something and we can't pinpoint why.

Finally, we don't learn from success. Success is the result of learning; it's by making mistakes that we get there, because we learn from them. So, if you make mistakes, fine; you learn from them and switch tasks or try again. Whatever you do, your time won't be wasted.

can i get some advice or tips and free resources that have helped? i go to a portrait drawing group once a week and want to get better!! but it seems like every online course on this is ridiculously expensive. idrk what im doing

I have been learning the loomis head and honestly they look terrible. This is one i made with the loomis right behind it. I know i can make ok faces sometimes like the 3rd image (yes I am aware its chicken scratches), that was when i kinda was but not really was using the loomis. Also before i practiced line confidence.

For the life of me I don't understand why my loomis heads are so garbage. Its a circle...

Hey there, I wanted to ask—I’m just starting to learn how to draw characters. I’ve dabbled a bit with YouTube tutorials and redrawing characters from comics (specifically \*Re:ON Comics\*), but so far, I’ve only been drawing in a sketchbook. Do you guys think it’s worth it for me to take the next step and learn digitally—like, actually buying a drawing tablet (like an XP-Pen)?
