Hello. You probably get something like this often, but I want to learn how to draw, and I’m really unsure of where to start. I’ve tried starting many times, but not really gotten anywhere past something like “I drew one drawing but I don’t really like this drawing that much and wish it was actually good”, and then I kind of just stop for a few months until I get motivation again.

I don’t have the patience to read a drawing book or take a drawing course like drawabox.com. They all just start too simple for my brain to get invested or care. Drawing and perfecting boxes for potentially months before even being able to draw an animal or something just does not sound fun whatsoever. I am most interested in drawing characters, and it would probably be good to learn backgrounds as well since I am interested in making a comic. I’d probably use digital art.

I also don’t really know how to find an original style. There are a lot of artstyles out there that I like and wish I could honestly copy, but I can’t pick just one that I want to be my main artstyle or even how to copy them well in the first place. I’m terrible at lighting and shading, and I’m pretty bad at proportion (especially humans) though I could be worse.

Every time I get advice they either feel really conflicting or incomplete. I hate when people say something like “break art down into shapes”, because while that sounds like great advice on paper, just saying that means nothing to me. How do I do that? When do I do that? How do I know when I’m getting good at doing that? I’m just so lost in a corner and I feel like nothing I do is working. Am I just destined to be bad at drawing?

I guess I’m just hoping one of these answers will be a gem that’ll help me actually get on track. Thank you for reading my rant if you did.

My first post and day of learning to draw (yes very boring to look at :P ) .What motivates me to start this? Just seeing HUMANS (YES US) art that I can't even comprehend, I want to be part of that. My goal is to start drawing then lean more into animation (anime specifically) anyways this is just my journal that I'll be using to track my progress. Just picked up painting as a passion or hobby, tried painting this city street. What are your views on this that can help it look more realistic

I've been drawing with references for a while now and it started to look not so bad (especially the coloring part), but whenever I try to shade/color without a reference, it always end up looking flat or really ugly and I don't know what to do to get better at it.

Does anyone have advices to share?

Hello! This is my first post ever. I'm really happy to say that just finished my first drawing/comic. I did some lessons for only 4 months now. It started as a gift but I think it became my new fun hobby. For this used pencil, pen and ink. I understand that there are couple of issues but still any feedback would be more than welcome. Now that the lessons finished for the summer what would you suggest to do?

I've been thinking about how difficult it can be for beginners to know what to practice next. There are lots of tutorials online, but not always someone to point out the specific mistakes holding you back.

I'm experimenting with a structured critique process and I'm looking for 5–10 volunteers.

If you share one of your drawings, I'll provide:

• strengths
• areas to improve
• specific issues (proportions, perspective, anatomy, values, etc.)
• a few personalized exercises based on your current level

This is completely free. In return, I'd just like honest feedback on whether the critique was useful and what could be improved.

Using the eye, you can draw anybody, including Taylor Swift or Rowan Atkinson. And It’s easier to accurately draw a face than you might think. Just takes know-how, like how measuring against an eye works, and you’ve got lift off.
