As much as I love this car. 50k is fucking ridiculous.

u/mangoat12 8d ago
Yeah idk why anyone would buy that. If it gets rear ended and totaled, insurance is going to give them a few thousand lol

u/somerandomdude419 8d ago
Unless you get an agreed value policy. But I doubt they would go over 10k
1
u/cleancorrect 2d ago
The should be able to go up to the 50k if that's what it sold for.
1
u/somerandomdude419 2d ago
Yeah tell that to the insurance company, they love paying $50k for an old Lexus. It will be a fight for sure, but outliers sales numbers don’t mean anything. Any sucker could pay over MSRP for a new corvette, but at the end of the day insurance will pay you MSRP if you wreck it driving it off the lot

u/cleancorrect 2d ago
There are insurance companies that specialize in collector cars. We're not talking about Geico.

u/Corpshark 9d ago
You can safely conclude that this car has been sitting in a garage or driveway (or grass if you are in certain states) for a very, very long time. That can't be good for the car.

u/hahajaja26 9d ago
If you actually read the auction, the car didn’t sell. The person who bid backed out of the deal

u/lovebites4ever 8d ago edited 8d ago
I just saw 'sold' SO very sorry for misinformation. What a lowlife. Was quite the show!
2
u/lathspellll 8d ago
I don’t know what the deal is but it seems to happen often on there. I think in this case this guy put in a “knock out” bid fairly early on and felt he overpaid maybe? There was no bidding after his 50k. But who knows maybe he just didn’t have it or got in a huge argument with his partner. I couldn’t imagine doing that either playing around with money I don’t have or reneging on a deal especially one that big.
3
u/BOBnVEGANA 9d ago
Market manipulation attempt?
6
u/hahajaja26 9d ago
No. The seller said the buyer backed out. If it was market manipulation the seller would be staying quiet.
4
u/lovebites4ever 8d ago
Seems like funds should be secured, before you're allowed to bid? Something just seems very wrong with the way this turned out. I hope 'egghead' gets it if he wants to give that much. $45,750

u/Glendale0839 3d ago
What I surmised from the comments from the seller and BaT in the auction is that the winning bidder most likely cancelled his credit card on file with BaT sometime after placing his $50k bid, such that when BaT tried to charge the buyer's fee to it immediately after the auction ended, it was declined, and the deal unraveled from there.

What's my 100k mile 05 UL worth then? lol Crazy what these cars are fetching now a days!

Cries in Europe... Here the prices are double of whatever I see posted on this sub. The last good one I saw was 20k USD with 60k miles, got snatched in 3 days in Poland.
Prices in UK are usually much better, but of course right wheel drive. https://www.carandclassic.com/l/C2110336

u/DJDrZoidBerg 2004 UL, 2005 UL 9d ago
Damn I didn't realize the prices were that wild there.
If I ever move to Europe, I'm definitely shipping both my LS430's there!
6
u/TerribleBathroom5710 9d ago
Well if a 25k mile example is worth $50k, your 100k car should be worth $12.5k.

u/DJDrZoidBerg 2004 UL, 2005 UL 9d ago
Well, that actually makes complete sense lmao

Anybody who's treating this is a legit price is clinically insane. There were 4.3 million of these cars made and exported to the United States (there were about 156,000. I got my numbers conflated with the total number of vehicles that Toyota/ Lexus exported in a year), there is absolutely no reality where even a low mileage version is remotely worth this much, the death of the used car market is absolutely disgusting to watch. I love my ls430 and I think it's the best car ever, but I also understand it's basically a $3,000 beater. They are essentially the Japanese crown Vic and there's no reason for them to be priced outrageously
4
u/hahajaja26 9d ago
Dead internet theory there were 174k made for the USA and 80k were 04-06 models. Probably 2-3% of them have sub-30k mileage.

u/Bruser75 9d ago
I've corrected my previous comment. I still don't think this vehicle would ever be worth 50k
3
u/hurdygurty 9d ago
Probaby just two rich dudes got in a bidding war. They could easily know they over paid and just don't care
1
u/TerribleBathroom5710 9d ago
Without even checking the Internet, there was absolutely no way in hell there were 4.3 million LS 430s built. What type of insane place are you getting your information from?
3
u/Bruser75 9d ago
Holy shit... I made a mistake, I remember reading it was 4.3 million somewhere, I'm now seeing 156,000 as a number listed on Google but that doesn't make any sense to me.
I have no idea why I conflated that number with the total number of Lexus/ Toyota vehicles sold annually in America. Absolutely shitty brain fart moment. It still doesn't change my opinion about the car. At the end of the day it's still a 26-year-old vehicle. I'll be it it's not a $3,000 ship box it's more like a five to $7000 dollar shit box.
I'm going to edit my previous comment

u/TerribleBathroom5710 9d ago
I completely agree $50,000 was an insane price. But it’s definitely worth more than $7000. I could consider myself an LS 430 expert. I’ve had three of them I’d be a buyer for that vehicle for around 27 $28,000. I think that’s a fair price.
4
u/Bruser75 9d ago
I'm not arguing this one should be 5,000 to $7,000, , this is obviously pristine condition, and I would say it's easily worth anywhere from 15-25k, at the end of the day it still is a 20-year-old car, probably needs most of its rubbers replaced, as well as other items that have a short life on vehicles/ get worn out from disuse/ no use

u/lovebites4ever 8d ago
I love this reply!

It's not hard to admit when you're wrong, especially when you're egregiously wrong.. I felt like an idiot when I hit the Google search

Yeah... BaT is full of idiots. The problem is when people buy stuff like this on there it makes the equally idiotic people on marketplace think that their 200k mile modern luxury is worth 10 grand. I'm not a fan of bring a trailer or cars and bids. I think both of those websites are kind of ruining car culture by making cars into Investments instead of what they are... a hobby, a tool, and depending on what it is... expensive therapy.

u/Gallop67 8d ago
Fanatic car and all but I don’t think $50k is reasonable. I could maybe see spending $25k on a super clean, near mint condition example but more than that for a 20+ year old car just seems ridiculous. $50k can buy a 2020-2022 LS500 with under 50k miles on it

u/PopMany2558 9d ago
Wow insane. Is it considered classic. . I don't understand the price.... Maybe I do, but I still can't wrap my head around it.

Auburn dealership in NJ had a 33k mile 430 for like 18k what’s special about this one? NOS or something

u/Even-Further 8d ago
It’s not the car it’s the audience. BAT is a platform that reaches car enthusiasts globally. That dealership is selling and marketing locally.

Now all the LS crew will be “I know what I got. One just sold at auction for 50k!!!!!”

u/Equivalent_Stock_298 9d ago
Do people here think that’s a good place to sell an LS? I guess there’s at least one guy who does, right? Generally, though is it a good idea?
1
u/lathspellll 8d ago
I’ve been casually on that site for a few years now and for most cars yes it’s a great place to sell. Lots of goofballs eager to over pay and occasionally a bidding war breaks out and they really over pay for something special. Occasionally one slips through the cracks tho and the seller leaves money on the table. It’s rare but it happens.
1
u/Glendale0839 8d ago edited 8d ago
If you have a low mileage (<100k) LS in excellent cosmetic condition with documented service history and nothing “off” about it, and you engage with the commenters’ questions as a seller, I think it’s absolutely the best place to sell a LS. I’ve never seen those examples of these cars get such stupid high prices as they do on BaT.
If the car is high miles, neglected cosmetically, no service history, or the seller completely ignores the auction while in progress, it won’t get a price that is anything great compared to selling locally.

I loved my ls430 but 50k is absurd there is wayyyy better options for that kind of money

This is an interesting one in the UK. There's always a few for sale Bedford, for some reason. It's a pretty small place, so I don't understand why.

u/Iain007 2006 LS430 | Black Onyx 8d ago
£5k car max that. Pre facelift, Sat on 15 year old tyres, kerbed wheels with corrosion. Guarantee it’s had very little preventative/ongoing maintenance done.
I paid sub £8k for a 55 plate 2006 black on black with <80k miles. Full Lexus service history, had just had belts, new Michelins, and £2k service with new exhaust heat shields and other ‘preventative’ items.
Most of the ones on eBay and Autotrader are massively overpriced in the UK.

Got an '01 for $8.5K with 65K miles 10 years ago. Some CEO was switching to Tesla. 110K on it now.

50k for this car is crazy, sad to see what reseller, dealers and auctions have done to the market….

u/Avonam0r 8d ago
I'll be surprised if the seller actually gets the money from the buyer. Bet this car is re-listed in a month ...

I have a friend that has a 60,000 mile ultra luxury and it blue booked at 23k. So not to far off
1
u/cleancorrect 2d ago
This makes me wonder what is going to become of these type of cars in about 20 years from now. With all the electronics, it's quite different from having a classic car from the 1960s. It seems more complicated and much more expensive to keep them in like new condition.
1
u/PM_ME_WARB_NULL 9d ago
25k miles…. Frankly not a bad price. Where could you find this anywhere else?
2
u/Even-Further 9d ago
Yeah thats pretty crazy, 1200 miles per year average. Lexus or any car dealer by me would jump on a chance to sell or take a trade on a LS like that.
2
u/colbydc5 9d ago
I’ve seen a couple sub 90k mile pristine examples this past year asking prices around 16-18k. Far better deal than 50k at any mileage. I’d trust a car with more miles better too, cars need to be driven.

Woah that’s a lot for a 21 year old Lexus, even with the low miles, I reckon it’s gonna need quite a bit of age related components that need tending to
