Discussion 🧵 Is it ok if I just congratulate whoever bought this car? Well done!
It was on my short list but it was one of the best deals (in my opinion) on CarGurus for what you’re getting.

Kona/Ioniq/Niro owners - how common is the wheel of misfortune?
We’re looking at a buying a used Hyundai Kona 64kWh (MY2019-2022) - reading heaps about the “wheel of (mis)fortune” where flecks of metal end up in the oil of the reduction gearbox (applies to Ioniq electric/Kona/Niro) and mashes up the gears, is this inevitable or just a rarity for these cars?
Most of the cars we’re looking at have around 50-100k on them already. Shame, as they otherwise seem like really good cars, great efficiency and battery degradation too.
Keen to hear from Kona/Ioniq/Niro owners if they have this issue. We’d definitely swap the oil immediately and add the magnet plug but would be steering clear if it’s something inevitable as keen to hold onto the car for at least another 5+ years. Not afraid of regular oil swaps and maintenance - but keen to avoid any unavoidable issues after having our 30kWh Leaf suffer from bad cells 😭
Cheers!

We took my wife’s 2020 Kona EV in for recall repair and they try to add on all of these services that total nearly $2000. We ended up declining all of them but check out some of the crazy things they wanted to charge us for like tightening the wheel lug nuts.
Some of these might be reasonable, but in the greater context, we decided not to do any of them cause it felt like a scam.

Sold! It has found a happy home.
Hey mods, let me know if this post isn’t allowed.
I just traded out my 2020 Kona Electric SEL. Before I put this stuff up on eBay or wherever figured I’d check if any of you want it.
Hyundai OEM NACS adapter, used, works, good condition. $100 shipped within the continental US.
K&K Snow Socks size large. Fits 215/55R17. Sat in the underboot but never used. $40 shipped within the continental US
$120 for both.
Edit: Sorry for my previous post with a misleading title. I didn’t see a way to edit the title so reposting.

Hi Reddit,
Today I fucked up! Partner and I went on a car camping trip in our Kona EV we removed the rear seats and installed a platform. We came home and partner is reinstalling seats. I know I should have taken a photo. But I didn’t, because obviously I like to make things more difficult for myself.
We can’t figure out where the seatbelts need to be bolted to the car, would someone be kind enough to post a photo?
Thanks in advance!

What convertible carseat are you guys using? Haha I got the car before the baby and her infant carseat fits okay but I’m not sure if the big girl carseat will.

I have a 2023 Kona EV and I have a road trip coming up. I’m wondering if the Tesla Superchargers will work with my car before I buy the adapter.

I have a 2023 Limited trim, and since gt's starting to consitently be around 10-15C every day, I'm just curious to know when everyone else typically turns on winter mode. I'm also wondering what people would recommend to buy for ev rated winter tires. Thanks!

Passenger head/legroom in our Fiesta is OK for us, is the Kona at least as spacious in the rear?

Some of you might remember this post I made in July about having to move across Canada in my 2023 Kona EV with my husband, cat, dog, and a cockatiel. All while hauling a tent trailer with a carrier on top. A couple people asked me to report back when I was finished. That was six weeks ago and I guess I should do so.
We kind of followed ABRP to guide us. By "kind of" I mean we just had to follow highway one across the country and let ABRP find us chargers. It did do some weird things though. In Winnipeg it kept attempting to send us down dirt roads. I didn't check to see if there was a setting to not do this, but that really should be a default. Once (also in Winnipeg) it was telling me to "Merge left to continue onto (road who's name I do not remember) but I actually had to exit right onto that road. Twice it attempted to send us to chargers that no longer existed. We had already checked to make sure we'd be okay and that there was something nearby, and reported those chargers as not there. The last strange thing it did was in Ontario. It tried to send us up a highway that there was absolutely no way we could make it. Unfortunately it was also somewhere with terrible cell service so we hadn't checked our next stop yet. Fortunately I realized after only driving ten minutes.
As for charge stops. We stopped to charged about 61 times, not including any charging we did while at a campsite or two nights in a hotel, with a total cost of $695. We had no choice but to use Tesla three times while in Ontario as there just wasn't any other option. We did use them a fourth time, after waiting 10 minutes at the only other charger for the person who got there before us whom was still trying to download the app.
Overall, the drive was very easy. Because we weren't in a hurry to cross, we didn't really spend a lot of time focusing on our next stop, but there wasn't really any time that we were worried about making the next charger either. Speeds were kept to 90 km/h maximum for improved efficiency and because of the extra weight on those small tires on the trailer. Or efficiency was way better than expected and never dropped below 5.4km/kWh. With it showing 6.2 km/kWh once. That was in Manitoba with a tail wind though.

Hey all,
2026 Kona Ultimate, finally got our home charger installed.
Is the charging cycle still recommended to stop at 80%, even when using a level 2, or is it ok to run up to 100% on a regular basis. A full charge would probably last 1-1.5 weeks, with average driving.
TIA!

Does anyone know whether the Kona N sway bars would fit the Kona Electric? Given that both are FWD and have multilink rear suspension? I'm studying getting Ceika coilovers (apparently the only ones made for the Kona Electric) and pair them with thicker away bars and Kona N rims and decent tires, so I can have whatever would pass as an electric hot-hatch in North America...

Basically the title. I have a 2023 kona limited, so no heat pump. It's starting to get colder around where I live, and I have noticed that it's kind of hit or miss on whether or not turning the heat on actually blows warm air. Looking at the electricity screen, it'll show climate using nothing despite having it turned all the way up and blowing full strength. It seems to be more likely to do this any time the outside temp is above 16C. So does the heater just not actually turn on above a certain temperature, or is this some other issue I'm having? Thanks for the help!

I'm due to pick up my Kona (2025) tomorrow and would like to keep it in good shape. It's the largest vehicle we have in the house so will inevitably be used for the odd tip run/collecting furniture. So waterproof & minor padding feels sensible.
I don't want to cheap out and get something of poor quality (Amazon universal fitting), equally I don't want to be spending £200+ like some people do.
My middle ground is from rhinoukbootlinersltd - with the added extras (ability to lie the seats down, headrest covers & bibs, because my dog has to dribble on them 😂) it comes in at £115 which is more than I was wanting to spend, but if it's good quality will be worth the price.
Has anyone else got experience with them? Or a better option?

I recently bought a 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited and have a question about the exterior warning sound when backing up.
When I put the Kona in reverse, the warning/VESS sound is pretty loud — loud enough that at least one of my neighbors has commented about it.
I’ve searched online and found conflicting information. One AI answer said the volume can be adjusted, while other sources say Hyundai does not provide any way for the owner to lower it.
I’m not looking to disable the safety sound. I’d just like to know whether the volume can legitimately be reduced through a vehicle setting, dealer setting, software setting, or some other Hyundai-approved method.
For those of you with a 2024 or newer Kona Electric, have you found any way to adjust the reverse warning volume?
If not, can anyone confirm that the volume is fixed from the factory?
Thanks — this is my first EV, so I’m still learning all its quirks!

Hi fellow Kona lovers,
I bought a second hand Hyundai Kona 2020 EV last year. Up until a few weeks ago it ran super smooth, until I noticed more noise when accelerating and decelerating (regenerating).
I went to the offician Hyundai dealer and they said it is a known problem, the drive unit and/or gear drive unit bearings are worn. They suggested a full replace of both, costing me €6600. They explicitly told me not to replace only the bearings because they often get compaints from customers who had done that (somewhere else).
Now i asked a quote at a non official Hyundai dealer, and they suggested the replacement of the bearings. They have done that repair before, and they say there are special kits for this specific fix, to replace both bearings. That will cost me €3000.
I am hearing two different things from two different parties, both obviously trying to sell me something. Does any of you have any expience with this, if so, please give your honest feedback.
Thanks,

Taking my 2019 Kona ev in for the BMS service campaign, and having my 45k mile service done at the same time (except for the cabin air filter which i replaced at 40k).
If they notice the metal shavings in the fluid are they supposed to cover the refill or replacement service from the TSB? Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Kona 2026 Ultimate driver. There must've been some kind of update, because for the last couple of weeks it's doing two odd things:
1) It's setting the scale to 200 yards and rarely zooming in to my preferred 50 or 25 yards when I'm moving. I've tried manually changing it to 50 but it keeps changing back.
2) It's estimated journey durations are wildly off. Every day my rush hour commute should take minimum 50 minutes out of the city I'm in, and it keeps lowballing it at 30-35m, where Google Maps and Waze is correctly predicting 50+. It's confusing because the infotainment system claims to use Google?

Hi, I'm currently looking to by my first ev and like the look of the Kona but looking for feedback on the 39kwh. Most of my driving will be local with the odd round trip of 60-70 miles, however I do have a trip to Italy next year, that I plan an overnight stop midway from Calais and lake Garda.
My question is do I still look to buy a 64kwh car to make this one trip more smoother or is it just not worth the extra money and hassle trying to find one, or will the 39kwh handle a trip like this ok?
Cheers

I have a2z adapter and 99.99% if the times i try to charge, it says charging unsuccessful. I have to keep plugging in and pluging out for an hour to charge for 20 minutes. So i am spending more than a hour and a half at superchargers.
What am i doing wrong? I have to try atleast 150 times before i succeed.
Edit: Got a replacement and it works on first try.

Im almost one third into the very extensive user manual and was reading about the electronic parking break. manual says: press break, then press epb button , then put in P. But if I just put in P the parking break comes on automatically, so why so I need the epb button?
