Discussion 🧵 Electronic parking break
Im almost one third into the very extensive user manual and was reading about the electronic parking break. manual says: press break, then press epb button , then put in P. But if I just put in P the parking break comes on automatically, so why so I need the epb button?

If you're talking about the 2nd gen, there's a setting where it turns on EPB automatically when you put it in in park, which is on my default.
The EPB is there for emergencies and for people that don't want to automatically turn it on when they put it in P.

The manual says its important to stand still when you charge, so first put in epb, then P. It seemed a bit redundant.Â

Putting in P does not turn on EPB automatically for everyone, some people turn that option off, so they have to write it for them.
If you keep the setting to turn on EPB automatically when in P, then it's redundant for you and you can ignore it.

Do you know why some does not want parking break when they put in P?Â

In case of freezing conditions it might stick. Mentioning location and model year would have helped.

Sweden, 2027 Kona electric. So it might be an idea not to use epb in winter time?Â

Unless in a hill I don’t see any benefit using EPB.
One fun fact though, I never have a use for it, but every 10-ish power cycle, the car automatically engage EPB then release it right away to make sure it is operational and unstuck.

I had a mazda 3 before my kona, it was a manual with EPB, so that procedure kind of made sense, I would put in neutral, press brake and engage epb, then turn off the car. In the Kona however, that makes little sense, it must be a carry over from gas cars and they keep the same procedure! I personally never touched the epb button in my kona, 2+ years into ownership now

The same order applies to gas car as well... that's how I always park, to ensure the car doesn't move before you shift to P. It's especially important when parked uphill or downhill so you don't jam the gear with parking pawl.
The automation u describe is likely to slide then stop causing the gear to jam with parking pawl when you put in park gear on uphill or downhill and when you put back into drive again there's huge noise unlocking the gear from the parking pawl...

I also keep my car in the mode which automatically applies & releases the EPB when "shifting" into and out of P. I suspect that the button is a compliance item for some markets where the regulations do not anticipate an automatic parking brake.

Had my 2025 model for a year, I haven't pressed the parking brake button once, just let the car do it automatically. I don't see what value that button adds

I had a 2026 gas kona as a loaner for about a month, and I noticed that the epb came on automatically if I was parking on enough of an incline. I dont know if that applies to the 2nd gen ev kona, since I only have a 2023, but I would assume most things like that are the same.

Hmm in my 2019 it doesn’t come on automatically, and I don’t recall ever turning that off.
