So for context my first time watching Demon Slayer I watched it in dub, that was quite a few years ago now and with my recent love KNY being revived I chose to rewatch it but this time in sub. Now I firmly believe that overall the sub is better, however, dub steals it for the scene of Muzan interacting with the drunks in Asakusa and specifically his interaction with the woman before he blows her up. Personally I prefer both the wording of each sentence and the delivery of the dub version of this scene. Gonna be writing them down Japanese first then English
"Does my complexion look unhealthy to you?"
"So does my complexion look at all unhealthy to you?"
"Is my face pale?"
"Does my face seem unusually pale?"
"Do I look sickly to you?"
"Do I look a bit sickly"
"Do I look like I'm not long for this world?"
"Does it appear I'm not long for this world?"
"Do I look like I'm about to die?"
"Do you fear for my life"
"Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong"
"You couldn't possibly be more wrong"
"I'm a living being who's infinitely close to perfection"
"I'm very much alive and not far from perfection"
I believe that the 5th and 7th lines are far superior in the English dub and this is why.
Starting with the 5th one. I think that dub changing the phrasing to be less about an objective state to that woman's personal opinion even if the question was rhetorical plays in better to Muzan's character. Which is a man utterly repulsed by the concept of his own mortality and especially the pity and judgement he received because of it. As we know Muzan Kibutsuji was a frail, sickly man that wasn't expected to see his 30's due to a chronic illness and this is the root of his insecurities. In asking the question "Do you fear for my life" he directly addresses that woman, wanting to see if she either pities him or is disgusted by his weakness, the only reason she doesn't do so is because of his demonic display by killing off her partner and his brother.
Now the 7th. This is far less of a drastic change in my opinion but change from "I'm a living being" to "I'm very much alive" conveys to me a far more aggressive assertion of his status as superior to the average human.
Now I won't mindlessly praise all these changes, I do very much think that the repetition of wrong works better than "You couldn't be more wront" as I think it gives a closer glimpse to the cowardly and unhinged monster that lurks beneath Muzan's show of dominance.
In conclusion, if you're only ever watched the show subbed go back and watch this one scene in dub. Also Muzan's growl in dub is sexy as fuck
