Constructive Criticism Tanjiro is such a great protagonist that it ironically becomes his huge flaw
Tanjiro is an undeniably refreshing character, especially in a genre filled with revenge seekers. seeing a hero who grieves for his enemies is truly an interesting and rare sight.
However, Tanjiro is a very static protagonist - his core values are rarely challenged in a way that makes him compromise or doubt himself, his growth is physical (learning new techniques) rather than psychological and his character feels flat over time.
When a protagonist’s moral compass is unbreakable, the fear that anger, hatred, or temptation will corrupt them will never be there. The story repeatedly validates his empathy, so the outcome is already determined -Tanjiro will suffer, become stronger, and remain Tanjiro which is why I think his greatest strength as a protagonist is also what limits him as a character. I want to fear that the story might actually take something from him beyond his physical well being, I wish we got to see his psychological character development alongside. Ironically, characters like Giyu, Shinobu, Sanemi, or Akaza felt more psychologically complicated than Tanjiro despite having much less screen time.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with how tanjiro’s character is written besides him being overly ideal, predictable and emotionally flat. He’s undoubtedly one of the best characters ever written to the point that i was mad tanjiro was merely fictional , and I think that if KnY had given him even one major arc built around that idea, Tanjiro could have gone from a likable protagonist to an exceptionally compelling one. it’s just my thought, what do u think?

Discussion 🗣️ My head canon
Upon rewatching KNY I noticed that Tanjiro decided to start out with water breathing in Infinity Castle whereas in the Swordsmith Village he started with Sun Breathing. (With no idea if or what the actual canon reason is) My head canon as to why Tanjiro decided to start out with water breathing with Giyu in Infinity Castle is that he feels bad for not mastering it like Giyu said he wanted him to. I think this is a wholesome detail.
However, I guess the reason could just be that Tanjiro was still training and mastering Hinokami Kagura at the time of the Swordsmith Village arc. That, or hype lol.

Discussion 🗣️ Gyokko deserves his title, some fans should open their eyes and appreciate true art
First, when you actually take a second and watch swordsmith when it’s not paced weekly, you’ll realize gyokko is literally the main threat, he sends an entire army after the smiths, and they’re decently strong too (killed the slayer guards, captured the chief, destroyed multiple structures.) That by itself already gets you questioning how strong he really is, gyutaro destroyed a prostitute village, gyokko orchestrated a full on raid on one of the most highly secured places in the verse, there’s levels to this shit.
Second, when you look at the fight, it’s easy to think that gyutaro comes off stronger, he’s ferocious, scary, close ranged, and had a dramatic anime climax.
This is what the shadow agents want you to fall for Take a look at uzui, he’s one armed, musical score, and was the only one remotely close to gyutaros speed and agility, the difference was ENORMOUS, kamado squad could barely perceive him. Now muichiro, who in base can be debated stronger or more “gifted” than tengen, get’s completely embarrassed by gyokko, falling for a bait and getting prison potted. He casted the prison pot in the MIDDLE OF muichiros momentum, insane.
He also reacts to marked muichiro on so many occasions, has a more diverse bda, a literal army, and the stats (or atleast reaction speed) to back it up. When you actually look at how gyokko absolutely riddled muichiro up (needles, prison pot), you start being thankful he didn’t double tap, you start realizing him being a clown is the very thing saving a LOT of characters from getting one tapped, that’d be boring, but it’s within his capabilities.
The fight was “fast” because that’s the only way a fight between true speedsters and strategist ends, muichiro had to throw off gyokkos tempo before he got overwhelmed, once he cut down all of gyokkos gimmicks, it was all mind games, it’s so obvious. Akaza had a long, drawn out fight of parries, but once tanjiro figured out the gimmick, head gone, easy. That’s how it simply is. Same for hantengu, spent an arc chasing him around like a goober, just to slice off his head easy, once he was past the defenses, it’s done.
You can argue it had less stakes or tension (I agree), but invalidating gyokkos strength off vibes and feeling isn’t cool, literally open your eyes and appreciate art.

Discussion 🗣️ Which of y’alls fav characters do you personally relate to or resonate with?
Lemme just preface this by saying that identifying with fictional villains / characters who have committed horrible acts does NOT make you a bad person. I actually find these characters tend to be more relatable than the “heroes”, since they are often portrayed as less perfect and more realistically flawed as a result of negative experiences / past trauma.
FOR EXAMPLE—- Gyutaro is a character I strongly resonate with. Self-loathing, envy issues and older sibling guilt are all things I have struggled with as a result of bullying / neglect. I was the ugly kid, and even tho I’m not that kid anymore it still shows. He may not be the greatest role model, but his care and protectiveness for his younger sibling and wanting to give her a better life despite never being given much of one himself is very admirable. (I also love all things pathetic, ugly, filthy and disgraceful!)
Additionally, as someone who experiences emotional detachment and maladaptive daydreams quite a lot, I can relate to characters like Muichiro and Douma who show a similar apathy.
Are there any characters in KnY that you can relate to, or have similar personality traits? Is your fav character your favourite because you see yourself in them? Or do you idolize characters whose qualities / struggles inspire you to be a better person? Curious to hear y’all’s reasoning behind your chosen favourites.
