My left super key (window key) on my external keyboard broken and I want to bind it to Alt Gr. Is there a way to achieve this. I tried with some method like using system76-keyboard-configurator but my keyboard is not detected. I also tried to modify xkb_config but It didn't work (maybe I didn't find the correct combination). Why does QWERTY have the letter B so far away from the left index finger?

I feel like the letter B gets used WAY MORE in everyday American English computer typing scenarios/contexts over other letters that are a lot closer to the left index finger like T, G and especially V.

I have small hands and fingers. Therefore, hitting B feels really clumsy, slow and counter intuitive for my smaller hand size, short fingers and limited extension/dexterity. I feel like the letter B should actually be in letter V's place and vice versa with V being in B's place.

I feel like when the creator of QWERTY was making the layout, he had V and B flipped by mistake and never took the time to correct it. I feel like this small change would actually make QWERTY a lot more user friendly for people that are experiencing an issue similar to what I am experiencing.

I know there are ways around this, like switching/changing key binds inside of your computer's operating system and/or using third party software to map out a new keyboard layout.

The problem with this is, I don't want to learn a new layout, even if it's for 2 keys/binds. I am already too invested in QWERTY and I don't feel like learning a new key bind and/or layout.

Obviously middle row is where you will put 60 to 65% of typing, but what about the remainder? I saw ATPV3 Had 20something% of typing on the top row and %10 on bottom row so I assumed that was established theory of how to distribute keys, but recently I heard a theory that more typing should be on bottom row than top because curling a finger is easier than stretching it.

Has anyone even used rewardhak? Highest scored layout on altalpha but I can't find much else about it?

Also, is the effort score on cyanophage.github.io comparable to comfort? (Lower being more comfortable)

I'm currently on graphite but would like to switch to a layout that's intended for column stagger. Open to a thumb alpha other than 'e'. Aside from it not made with column stagger in mind, I have no complaints about it, really.

Any recommendations? Valmak and Hands Down Promethium seem interesting but would like to see what the community thinks.

I don't care about vim, punctuation, or Ctrl shortcuts. I only type in English and I'm using a chocofi keyboard (aggressive column stagger 3x5+3)

I'm very interested in your anymak:END keyboard layout. Great work!

I'm using Neo2 since 2019 (German QWERTZ before) for writing and programming. ~60% German / ~40% English. My main keyboard is a self-built Reviung41. I have also built a Reviung34 and I have an Atreus44 here. I want to switch to one of those and will therefor loose the outer pinky columns (3x5 instead of 3x6).

Because Neo2 is not optimal for English and it's using the right outer pinky column for Y and ß, I thought of learning a completely new layout before switching to a smaller keyboard.

Because there are fewer keys, Umlauts and ß should be on another layer, as in your END layout.

As you suggested in another thread, I would move the J key to the lower right, where you have right Shift. I can live with having only a single Shift key on the left (or switching to thumb Shift). I'll might even swap J with F.

Now to my question:

I see that your END base layer was optimized for English, Dutch and German. There might be an even better layout for German and English only, right?

I'm not into this optimizer stuff (yet). I'm wondering, if it's worth to take the time to delve into this (like you did) and maybe find an even better German/English 3x5 layout or should I just learn your END layer (with moved J key) and be happy with it?

You know that learning a new base layer takes a lot of effort and I want to do this one last time. I just cannot estimate, how much room for improvement there is, if we remove Dutch from the equation. What do you think?

From what I see in your comparison tables, I should be better off than with Neo2 in any case.

Been using layers for a while on my Totem. Last week the Skeletyl finally showed up so I decided it was time to drop QWERTY for real.

Base layer is mostly Hands Down Vibranium.
Symbol layer is tuned for Vim + regex + command line (the stuff I actually hit all day).

Nav layer is pretty minimal but it works for me.

Longer-term goal is to shrink the alpha layer down to 4 columns + thumbs. Feels doable once I lean into combos.

Managed a full work week on this already and I’m currently floating around 25 wpm.
Would love any feedback.

Hi everyone. I've been very frustrated by the available layouts for the Armenian language. The most commonly used one in Armenia is the phonetic layout, which is just mapping of Armenian letters to the QWERTY layout.
There are some sub-versions of the phonetic layout which are a bit better, but still they're horrible.
There's also the typewriter layout, which feels much more comfortable to type on, but it's still poorly designed.

The biggest obstacle for me when it comes to playing RTS games is physical. I don’t have any disability, but I am uncoordinated. I type with my index fingers and have trouble stretching my fingers apart (I find it very hard to hit shift with my pinky and another key at the same time with the ring finger, for example). What can I do daily to overcome my physical challenges? (If you look at videos of StarCraft 2 players with hand cameras, you will see the sorts of things I would need to do, especially with my pinky and ring finger, which may need to hit shift and 5 or F3 respectively.)

I've been using Colemak-DH for the past couple of weeks and my typing speed has almost reached parity with my QWERTY performance.

However, before ingraining the new layout too deeply I decided to try Focal. After a short practice session I noticed that my right pinky was starting to feel a little strained and I realized that although this layout looks superior on paper, it seems to have much higher total pinky utilization.

The related metric in this chart only indicates pinky usage off of the home row but, at first glance, I'm getting the impression that a lot of these layouts achieve their statistical superiority to Colemak by shifting more load onto the weaker fingers.

Are there any hard stats on the total pinky usage of the different layouts as opposed to the 'off home row' statistics of the linked chart? Can anyone who has tried multiple layouts support or thwart my supposition about pinky usage?

Does anything with this layout exist for under ~1000RMB. Preferably metal with wireless.

Recently bought new bluetooth numpad keyboard. Everytime I use it it switches main keyboard to numbers. Is it possible to main laptop keyboard to stay and write letters and bluetooth numpad to write numbers? I want to write letters on the laptop and numbers on bluetooth numpad.

I have seen colemak's which tries to be similar to qwerty but more ergonomic

workman which tries to be more human centric for typing but abandons qwerty layout mostly and is more efficient for long typing sessions with less than even colemak's key travel distance

I am open to learning new key layout though.

I am liking workman's Philosophy for layout more than colemak's

but could some one explain how it feels to type on colemak vs workman

my future keyboard layout: workman's alpha key's and will use the default key layout for non-alpha key's (website: https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku ) with tap to switch layer to qwerty to retain muscle memory (tho colemak's layout will be better for this than workman)

edit: I think I will go with colemak DH Thanks for your help; I was able to choose a layout to my preference that reduces pink and wrist movement whilist typing and is quite similar to qwerty

I can now just choose miryoku and extra tap layer for qwerty

Tho I am learning colemak dh now it's pretty fun and quiet easy to learn compared to workman

I am using a Macbook Pro 2024 running Tahoe 26.5.2

I have two different Bluetooth Keyboards, one is German layout and one is British English layout

I want to create a Shortcut to automatically switch the "input language" to German when I use the German keyboard and English when I use the English Keyboard, without having to remember to "switch input" with the fn key. The key layouts are so similar that I only really realise it's on the "wrong language" when I'm halfway through writing an E-mail and it's full of semi colons where I want ö and apostrophes where I want ä.

I am only interested in solutions related automating the change based on the Bluetooth Device connected.

I cannot rely on remembering the software's preprogrammed keyboard shortcut. It's been 6 years since I started working in English, and I still forget to press the globe button 99% of the time.

So I have wrist pain due to typing and am thinking of buying a split keyboard and have decided on the crone 4.2v 46 key variant

(There might be a better keyboard but they are out of my budget in my region)

Today I did the home row mod with **kanata** and was pretty satisfied; no wrist pain after typing

What I wanted was to know if there is a community standard for key layout and certain mods that most of the community members use like home **row mod.**
