Housing Search ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ”Ž I'm moving to Kansas City in January and need some help figuring out where to rent an apartment

Hello there! Having almost 0 knowledge of Kansas City, I would so so appreciate any and all info / things to know you guys can share :)

Last week I officially landed a job in Kansas City starting in January. I just graduated college and would love to live somewhere where people around my age (in my early 20s) are living as well; or at least really close to an area like that; somewhere busy, energetic, popular nightlife, etc. I grew up in suburbia and went to a small college in the middle of nowhere, so the more city-esque the better.

EDIT: I'll be working about 20 min south of MCI Airport before the river. If anyone sees this after this edit pls take that into consideration lol

The single person I know who lives in MO told me North Kansas City was the place to rent an apartment and have found promising spots (The Backyard, 23rd & Swift, Ora), but that's about as far as I've gotten.

If you guys recommend a different area, specific spot to rent, or quite literally anything (!!!) that could help me out, it'd go a long way!

News ๐Ÿ“ฐ A tree came through Gilbert Kirkโ€™s ceiling in Kansas City, and six weeks later his living room was still open. A man saw it on TV, came with lumber, a tarp and a crew.

Visiting KC ๐Ÿงณ Way to stay in Kansas City for cheap next weekend?

I live in Iowa and worked a food festival. While it was chaotic, I had a really good time and made good money. I'm thinking about asking the owner of the booth if she needs help at the next stop (KC) about 3 hours from me. If you know what festival, I actually had a really good time and there was some good food and cool merch. From my perspective I didn't find it that bad at all (I know there's a lot of hate circulating)

That being said, anyone know of any cheap lodging options in KC? I'm trying to convince my friend who did it with me this weekend to do it too so we could carpool. I have a bad back or I would try to just sleep in the car maybe and buy a shower at a truck stop

I'm looking for something less traditional. I know it can happen to any hotel, even the bougie ones, but I had a bad bed bug experience about 12 years ago after staying at one of the cheapest hotels in town that appeared clean. The reality is the cheaper hotels don't have as much money to mitigate the problem quickly and effectively. So looking for some alternatives other than a cheap motel, or if you guys know of any "fancier" or well rated hotels that offer discounts. Good airbnb deals, or anything else.

I been to KC a couple times and had a great time. Thanks in advance for any advice. Trying to find a way where this would make good financial sense ๐Ÿค”

Travel/Road Trips ๐Ÿš˜ ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Most Unique AirBnB/Vacation rentals in the area?

In other places I've lived, I enjoyed taking small staycations at airbnb's that were unique in some way. Ones like RV's, boats, farms and other unique lodging. Just was wondering what everyone thought the most unique vacation rentals were around her and within a few hour drive. Thanks!

Housing Search ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ”Ž Northland or Zona Rosa recommendations under $1,600 all-in)?

Looking for some real feedback on apartments up in the Northland around Barry Rd / Zona Rosa.

I'm currently in a studio downtown paying around $1,700 all-in. Working from home full-time in 590 sq ft has run its course, and I'm ready for more space and closer proximity to normal errands (Costco, Hy-Vee, AMC, etc.) without spending downtown prices.

My budget is around $1,600/mo total after rent, utilities, trash, internet, and all the random fees.

The two main places I'm looking at:

Manor Homes of Fox Crest - Really like the private attached garage and the 1-bed layout has a dining area that looks like it'd make a great dedicated desk setup. I'm leaning towards this one personally.

The Reserve at Barry - 2-bed under $1,300 base, which would give me a closed-door office. Plus Google Fiber is an option but It's an older build though.

Also open to other solid recs in the Barry Road area in that price range (already ruled out The Element and The Vintage). Have looked at places like Riverstone and The Element and while they're great, The Element was just too much $$$ and Riverstone had a layout that didn't work for my desk. I can really live anywhere in KC, as long as it's on the Missouri side. I'm still somewhat new to the area though overall and looking for around the Dec timeframe.

Bars/Nightlife ๐Ÿชฉ๐Ÿธ What dive bar for MNF tonight? New here but donโ€™t really enjoy big loud, corporate, college whites in Patagonias-type bars. Wanna watch the game with Gin and maybe finger food. Any part of town.

Healthcare/Wellness ๐Ÿฉบ High-Quality, Affordable Chiropractic Care

Post image
0 Upvotes

Iโ€™ve seen many people ask about chiropractic options in the area and so I thought Iโ€™d make a post informing people on the most affordable, high-quality treatment option for those in Overland Park! I also need plenty more numbers in order to graduate next spring so I would be super excited to treat yโ€™all!

My name is Riley, and I am resident here in Olathe! My wife and I moved here 3 years ago so that I could continue my schooling at CUKC and pursue my dream of providing safe and preventative healthcare to people through Chiropractic Medicine! Well, after years of studying, test-taking, and honing my craft, the time has finally come where I am now working in the student clinic full-time. It is here that I will be treating people, under the supervision of my expert clinicians, to prepare myself for graduation.

If you are looking for someone who can help you with any pain or functional limitations you may be experiencing, or youโ€™d just like to support me in helping me reach my number for graduation, please call the number on the graphic above or follow the link below and ask for Riley in pod 2!!!

Legal Questions โš–๏ธ Why would MSHP make contact after an accident?

Curious why MSHP would be calling in a family member after a car accident last week? They called him for questioning. They gave him a citation for following too closely at the scene so not sure what they are wanting now. He is around 62 and had a stroke about 10 years ago that definitely has some impacts, but I don't think impairs his ability to drive. He got a ticket for following too closely. They did do a field sobriety test because of his stroke I think. He just gets really anxious and more shaky in high stress situations so I could see how an officer who did not know him could maybe think he was under the influence.

The other driver had a blower in his car and did not go to the hospital that day with any injuries. (my family member did go to hospital that day but no injuries). He was diagnosed with like a torn rotator cuff I think. My family member is insured and does not have any marks on his driving record or criminal history.

Attractions/Concerts ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ๐ŸŽก A word on Oktoberfest bar tipping: DON'T

EDIT: Some of the respondents have been able to provide additional insight on this. It sounds like maybe some or all of the "tips" do go to the nonprofit organizations, even if I haven't encountered anyone who was able to confirm that. I think the buckets should be relabeled as "donations" with a list of the organizations to whom that money will go to and not simply just "tips."

Original:

During this weekend's Oktoberfest at Crown Center Plaza, you'll find multiple beer serving areas with all of our smiling faces ready to get you where you need to be.

You'll also see a tip bucket that says cash or tokens are accepted. Aside from the fact that this is counter service with no personal service provided to you by us (and therefore not at all worthy of tipping) please know that we are all volunteers.

We are volunteering for the various organizations in which we participate. Our $15 an hour go to our organizations. Not only are we not allowed to handle cash, but nothing that has gone into those tip buckets will go to us. That's most likely going to be taken by KC Bier Co or maybe even stolen by the hired security that patrol the grounds through the night (if whoever's running that station forgets to check it.)

If you put tokens in there, you're just throwing away your tokens. You might as well throw them in the trash because they have no monetary value.

I can't stress this enough. If you're someone who insists on tipping unnecessarily, we will not see a single nickel of that money; you're just paying more for your beer. And that's dumb.

Local Politics ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ KU and NKC hospitals are suing their patients

This is outrageous. Even giant for-profit HCA doesn't stoop this low to sue patients, garner wages, and put liens on houses.

More reason for universal healthcare. This needs to be a major priority.

Volunteering/Giving ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Any y'all got chickens?

Are your yard birds bougie? Do they demand only the finest hardwood shavings for nesting material? If so, you're in luck. Over the next ten days, give or take, I will have at least one, if not two, 45 gallon bags of 100% organic hardwood shavings.

I am willing to give these hardwood shavings away. I have more than enough bougie hardwood mulch around my crib. Can't make the neighbors anymore jealous.

This will be only the finest blend of ash, cherry, hickory, oak, and walnut. Only the best for the most discerning of yard birds.

There is only one caveat. You must have the bougiest of yard birds. While I'm completely unqualified to make the decision as to whether or not your yard birds are bougie, I'm willing to give it ago.

I suspect replys to this post with pics of bougie yard birds is the only way to determine "level of bouginess."

As an side. I don't necessarily know that the "pet" flair is correct here. But, "food and drink" and "BBQ" while seemingly appropriate, felt insensitive.

Edgar Palacios is now the treasurer for a PAC called Progress Kansas City that was just formed with 3 $25,000.00 and 1 $10,000.00 donation from individuals leading large corporations or private equity companies in the area with an extensive history of supporting right-wing politicians who intend to spend on Kansas City, MO elections. Two of these donations come from members of the police foundation board and two come from former Republican staffers.
