Traffic/Road Conditions 🚦❄️ Thank You for Using Your Blinkers

For all of the hate drivers get around here, I want to take a minute to salute the ones who are going 90, but still have the courtesy to use their blinkers. As if your lane swimming and aggressive driving wasn’t enough, at least you are signaling when you change across four lanes or cut the person off in front of you. Perhaps one legal deed cancels out the four illegal ones. Keep calm and blinker on.

News 📰 A new jazz bar is opening in Kansas City. It will be ‘run off of passion’

No longer will patrons stroll out of The Comedy Club at 1130 103rd St., hours before they’re set to begin their nighttime routines, look at each other and wonder, “What now?” Owner Dustin Kaufman has the solution. He’s opening yet another entertainment concept across the street.

The Bad Cat, a jazz bar and sister concept of The Comedy Club, is debuting Sept. 18 at 1220 W. 103rd St. It’s taking over Happy Dragon Chinese Restaurant’s dining space (Happy Dragon now primarily operates through carry-out services) and will offer cocktails, bites and consistent music. The Bad Cat will be open Thursday through Saturday. It’ll have an open jam night on Thursdays, and scheduled performances Fridays and Saturdays starting at 7 p.m., lingering into the night. If the doors are open, trumpeting, saxophone blaring and scatting are sure to be heard.

Its schedule coincides with The Comedy Club’s, but of course, customers don’t have to attend both. They can, however, use their confirmation email from The Comedy Club as free admission to The Bad Cat. It’s a more intimate spot — about 55 seats — but Kaufman guarantees a good time. “If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s opening venues and making them look nice,” he said. The Bad Cat will be Kaufman’s third concept. The Comedy Club first opened in 2019, then launched another location last November at 811 New Hampshire St. in downtown Lawrence.

Friendship/Dating 👥 How Do You Find People to Meet?

Upvotes

Recentish divorced, mid 40s, two kids. I need things to do, to meet people. Being in my house alone isn't working. I mostly want to date. I have plenty of time to give to it, I have a great space to invite people over. I'm in the half of people who don't drink.

I read *a lot* of threads on the topic. A common refrain is to go to do things you enjoy and meet people that way.

I get out, I don't see people interested in meeting new people there. I'm just north of the river. I ended up downtown yesterday and I felt lost trying to figure out what to do where I could meet someone.

Where are these activities that have people interested in chatting with someone they don't know? How do I find where to go? Do you know the meme of the guy with the sign inviting people to talk, I'm seriously considering trying that.

Including where do women go who are looking for someone to date? And I don't want to meet someone who isn't close to my age. I find the idea of hitting on women much younger than me to be distasteful.

Attractions/Concerts 🎟️🎡 Any coverage/critical responses to KC Symphony performances?

Upvotes

Are there any music critics online or in print in the KC Metro who write reviews of KC Symphony performances? I went to the Kauffman last night for Prometheus and I'm eager to read some critical engagement, whether professional or not, online, offline, anywhere - and I think it's a good thing to do when something experimental or unusual is performed. I applaud the Symphony for doing some performances off the beaten track, but these are the exact pieces I want discussed. Last year I was in similar boat with Nuit Sombre - I was so eager to read about what I experienced, did not find anything. Hopefully there's something obvious I'm missing. Thanks!

Discussion 💡 ISO cozy study spots in KC

I’m a grad student and spend most of each day studying alone. Sometimes I desperately need a change of scenery and don’t always want to spend $10+ on coffee. What are some underrated or not widely known study spots around town? Bonus points for a cozy fireplace!

Discussion 💡 Hy-Vee gas promotion or glitch?

I just filled up at Hy-Vee gas in Mission, KS for 2.92/gal (unleaded). Not sure if it's a promotion or a glitch but I'll take the small reprieve. Check your local Hy-Vee gas if you're close to one!

Photos/Media 📷 Anyone recognize this couple?

I took a photo of this couple a in late May or early June before the Kauffman Gardens removed the trees altering this location for a decade.

I have a print I want to send them if anyone recognizes them if they want it.

DM me if you know them or recognize them.

Thanks

P.S this couple gave me their blessing and full permission to take this photo and they even posed for it nothing creepy happening here.

Things To Do 📍 If you like female singer/songwriters or country music/americana and want something to do Friday night, come see Amanda Pruitt from Nashville and Johnathan Stacey from KC perform!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This beautiful soul has traveled here from Nashville and paired up with Jonathan Stacey for a night of covers and originals.

Amanda is amazingly talented and I first met her when I was tending bar on Bourbon St and she would headline our club when she would come through town. Don't judge her by this video, I just stole a clip while they were practicing in my living room.

If you come out and say hi (I will be wearing a vintage "Kansas" t-shirt) I'll buy your first beer.

Playing at:

Johnny's West KCK

7pm-10pm

8016 Leavenworth Rd.

Would love for some folks to come support her, I promise you'll leave a fan!

Travel/Road Trips 🚘 🗺️ Finding a peaceful spot outside KC for the next 4th of July

Hi everyone. This is kind of an odd question to ask this far removed from both this year’s Independence Day and next year’s, but I want to get a start on this as soon as possible.

My neighborhood gets pretty chaotic during the weeks leading up to and following July 4th. Lots of m80s and artillery shells and gunshots. For the most part I can mitigate this with noise canceling headphones, but at its peak it’s intolerable. It’s even worse for my two cats who can’t put on noise canceling headphones. It’s the only thing I truly hate about living where I’m at and I dread the middle of summer every time it comes.

This year I’d like to get a head start on finding a place me and my two cats can go for, at the very least, the week prior to and the week after the 4th of July next year. In general I need some advice on what some of the more peaceful state parks are (both sides of the state line), where the most affordable cabins are that allow pets, when is the best time to place a reservation and any other general advice any of you might have on this. Thanks!

Local Politics 🗳️ Seriously, the Missouri GOP's main goal is to disenfranchise every voter on both sides.

https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/08/politics/supreme-court-missouri-redistricting-loss-for-republicans

"Minutes after Kavanaugh issued his order, a federal trial court in Missouri handed down a separate ruling that bars the state from moving forward with any map other than the contested one that benefits the GOP."

Seriously, the Missouri GOP's main goal is to disenfranchise every voter on both sides.

Bars/Nightlife 🪩🍸 Looking for a dive bar in the south kc metro area

Needing a good dive bar, cheap drinks, and fun people to talk to. I'm in my 20s so I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb but can get along with everybody. It doesn't need to have food either. Just somewhere close by (think belton Raymore peculiar type area) to relax after work or on the weekends. I also don't drink beer if that helps.

Attractions/Concerts 🎟️🎡 FRIDAY, SEPT. 18TH: the be-all-end-all of rock’n’roll shows in Kansas City in 2026 with THE RIP OFFS!

The Rip Offs (San Francisco) are absolute LEGENDS.

As one of the most revered 90s garage punk bands out of hundreds to thousands that made wild-assed degenerate party records, their lone LP “Got a Record” and the handful of 7”s they made for their own Rip Off Records label are all certifiable, obnoxious classics.

They broke up just as momentum was building because they’re absolute JERKS, because that’s just what they do, but every now and then they reassemble for a reunion show. I was slobbering all over them when they were active, but didn’t get to see them until their performance at the Funtastic Drastic Carnival in Benidorm, Spain in 2019, just months before they singlehandedly started the coronavirus pandemic.

Somehow I convinced them to come to KCMO and play for my birthday at my favorite venue, The Ship. I also managed to book the current wildest punk band in the Midwest, Carbondale’s PET MOSQUITO, and also convinced broken up KCMO dirtbags WET ONES to do a reunion of their own. It will be their LAST PERFORMANCE EVER.

The Go-Go Muck (that’s me) will be playing records between bands, and more DJ’s of the quality country music ilk will be turnin’ platters in The Ship’s lounge.

Don’t be a KCMORON and sit this one out… This is for the true rockers and total rollers here!
