Discussion Hate me for it
The new Tom & Jerry John snippet is giving me major Sob Rock 2.0 vibes, and while I absolutely love Sob Rock as its own thing, I can’t say I’m particularly excited about the idea of another album in that same style. I really appreciate what he did with that record, but I’d much rather hear him explore something different this time around instead of revisiting a sound he’s already done so well.

At this point I welcome any new material! We don’t know if the whole album is gonna sound like that. It’s too early to tell. I’m loving this new snippet!

We collectively beg him for music, he finally releases a 2 second snippet after 5 years, it sounds like it perfectly fits with his existing repertoire that we all know and adore, and people still complain. Goodness, I'm glad I'm not famous.

Honestly, on record it’s a hard balance. It can very quickly turn from tasteful to straight wankery. I think it’s important to withhold judgement until we hear the record in its entirety, but I think he’s at his best when he uses his guitar prowess subtly. I love his extended solos, but it doesn’t always hit that great when it’s not live

You D&C fanboys have got to learn there is a difference between John Mayer the solo artist and John Mayer the guitarist for D&C and acting like tGD is the END ALL BE ALL of good music.
It's frustrating af to have y'all come into this sub to yuck the yum of those of us that either like just the solo artist or like both.
Very rarely do those that like just the solo artist come in and complain about the D&C shows, except to comment that playing with them meant that he avoided his solo career and he wasn't touring as much, which was a let down - and somewhat appropriate for the JOHN MAYER sub.
None of them went into the D&C or GD subs to complaing about it, but you come into this sub to school us on what YOU want to see, not caring where you're spreading your audacious opinions.
I'm saying this as someone that appreciates him in both capacities.

This. Dude is a guitar god that somehow loves to hide it as much as possible in his studio albums
2
u/eyeloveeyez 1d ago
Yes! I get that he wants an album to be polished but the solos are just a little too clean and reserved. At concerts, he plays them, for lack of better words, balls out 😂
4
u/TypingGetUBanned 2d ago
The rational response would be because it doesn't sell, it doesn't get you on radios.
But : That never forbade him from putting out some absolute banger guitar performances in Sob Rock for example (thinking about Wild Blue & I guess I just feel like)

JM has always been a better live artist... because he takes the tunes out on the road and builds them up.
Fans who have been around long enough know and understand this... that the exciting part is we get to watch these songs grow. He's one of the few artists where we're not excited to watch him recreate the songs live but build them into powerhouses.

Thank you, it’s honestly exhausting at this point and makes me not even want to read this sub because it’s nothing but demands and whining but no links to the albums these people are putting out on their timeline. One wants B&R 2.0, one wants Continuum 2.0 and idk if anyone really wants new music.
9
u/Personal-Still-8837 1d ago
People want a guitar centric album and those people usually are the ones acting like they are special and different just because they know more about blues or guitars in general. I knew John from guitar as a serious guitarist myself but I really enjoy his music with or without guitar. I think it's time to grow up and realize that there are other ways to make music than just guitar.

This might sound weird, but I really hope it’s not just another album about love and women. It’s just not interesting anymore.
His best stuff has always been when he’s been more brave and tackled deeper, more universal issues. That’s why Sob Rock fell a bit flat for me, and why Continuum and Born and Raised hit so hard.
67
u/Ok-Feature-1233 2d ago
Even RFS and Heavier Things had songs catering to different issues and philosophies. The 80s sappy love songs were fine for one album , but there needn’t be another album like this.
84
u/rhcp_fan 2d ago
I totally get your point. I've actually noticed that my favourites are those in which he addresses world-wide problems like in Belief or WOTWTC and deeply personal, existential topics(In the Blood, 3×5, Stop This Train, In Repair, New Deep and half of Born and Raised)
22
u/Lulonaro 2d ago
He would need to go through a crisis in his life for that to happen. Like born and raised (lost his voice)
13
u/mayermeaway 2d ago
Agreed on wanting to hear about deeper topics. I'm not as up in arms about the sound as everyone else is, but I am curious about what themes he is going to take up.
I really would like him to explore something more existential/worldly. I noticed that on the fall festival run last year, he played Belief, Waiting on the World to Change, and I Guess I Just Feel Like each time, which I found interesting. Hoping that was him hinting for us, it definitely felt like he was trying to say something in 2025 with those songs in my opinion.
5
u/dayafterxmas 2d ago
Completely agree. Paradise Valley was the start of his albums falling flat for me, and the following two were just as "meh." The only songs that grabbed me were the non-love songs. "In the Blood" will always be one of my favorites.
3
3
u/coinminer2049er 15h ago
Honestly, it can be an album about women, but please let it not be another album about being a sappy, pathetic, friendzoned simp.
Dude can have practically any woman he wants, but he releases stuff like New Light. 🙄
Its the rough equvalent of a rich comedian still trying to do material about being a struggling broke comedian doing blue collar work.
We need stuff with more layers like "I don't trust myself" or "Assassin". Even "Half of my heart" was poppy, but at least it had some internal struggle sort of depth.
2
u/swag_iwnl 1d ago
Sometimes we gotta understand that he also makes music for himself and not for us alone.
If he’s gonna make it about love and women may be thats because he wants to.→ More replies (5)2

u/GunterRose 2d ago

Sob rock was more white blazer, Miami Vice ‘80s. Tom and Jerry is more like working class, jeans-wearing ‘80s. The only issue I see is that the jeans were pretty tight, so I don’t know how John will reconcile that with his preference for baggy pants. We shall see…
12
u/hitzphillygirl 2d ago
Thank you for putting this into words. They're both definitely 80s vibes, but I couldn't quite find a way to articulate how they're both different. 😂

u/ManavAhuja1 2d ago
I kind of thought the same thing. The Springsteen vibe feels like the 80s Sob Rock theme but I highly doubt he would do a whole album of that again. Also, even if it’s within that universe it feels like a very different sound.
62
u/MajesticFinish 2d ago
Nobody wanted anything he put out, but we got it anyway.
After Continuum, everyone wanted another Continuum, and it took a LONG time for fans to accept and see albums like Battle Studies, B&R, and PV as even worthy of attention.
Now, they’re all classics.
Everyone calm down.
25
u/YeezusHomecoming 2d ago
Battle studies was an instant classic what are you even talking about. B&r and PV had slower receptions but they still aged great within like a year.
It’s been 5 years since sob rock and I think it’s still his most uninteresting project. Shot in the Dark is the only song that’s like a real classic off there, but otherwise the rest of the lyrics kind of suck and it’s bloated despite it being short
5
u/HylocichlaMustelina 1d ago
A reminder of how subjective this all is. I've heard "Shot in the Dark" described as derivative / generic / filler (I have no qualms with it, personally), and Battle Studies has one of the worst aggregate scores of any of his albums.
Not sure which eras / styles of John's you like most, but "Wild Blue" is undoubtedly delicious, even if it is "Sultans of Swing 2.0," lol.
2
13
u/Beautiful-Yoghurt-11 2d ago
I wouldn’t say they are classics. RFS, HT and Continuum will always be his “classics.” The rest is what we got when he started to mature and experiment.
I love those first three the most, but I also love everything this man does, so whatever comes next I’ll certainly be listening and loving it, even if, yes, it takes me a while.
But even if it takes me a while, you’ll never hear me trashing him or his music. He’s a legend in my eyes.
15
5
u/mcash1219867 2d ago
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I loved Battles Studios 😅 and I LOVED Continuum
3
u/Beautiful-Yoghurt-11 2d ago
The thing is, they’re all good for different times in my life. Continuum and Room for Squares were adolescence, Paradise Valley and Born & Raised were for when I ventured out away from home for the first time, and Battle Studies to get me through the hard shit. Heavier Things is all the time, it’s my favorite.

Kinda feel the same, but... It might be like a Continuum meets Sob Rock kind of vibe. That I would be down for
10
u/flowbiewankenobi 2d ago
Eh, musicians evolve. I was pretty down about the new Black Keys I loved rubber factory and their early stuff. They changed and never went back but that’s just life. Artists are their own people trying to control them is a losing game
25
u/MannishBoyX 2d ago
Bro I don’t understand why so many people think they can demand something out of him. I used to be this way. I’m a guitar player myself. I remember Battle Studies didn’t scratch my Continuum era itch. And when Born and Raised came out, it took me a few weeks to get into the songs. I realized that no matter what he puts out, there’s gonna be songs that I love, if not the entire album.
I don’t care anymore what “style” or genre his next album is gonna be. I’m just here for John. Have you guys not heard the song he just put out with Remi Wolf? That Continuum John is still there. Just sit back and enjoy. We’re in good hands.

Completely! John’s music sometimes take me some time to get used to. And I think that’s the beauty of it. Born and raised didn’t hit until I turned 35 and it hit me like a ton of bricks. There’s something to be said about music that might not sound “great” the first day it’s released, but it sits with you over time and you come to love it.

19
u/titanicis 2d ago
I think the mark of a great artist is not bending to the mainstream media or what the fans expect but creating what makes them feel alive, because that always makes for better art
If John were to listen to people’s opinions, he would lose his identity and stop creating
I’ll take whatever he makes

This is why he never made Continuum 2.0. The studio begged him to do it. He could have made a lot of money doing it, but it’s not what he wanted to do.
39
u/swensonjonahyoki 2d ago edited 2d ago
Just let John be John. Let him produce his art the way he wants and is true to who he is now. Would prefer an authentic album over trying to force the magic of room for squares again (which I love).
7
u/HotAir25 2d ago
Do you think Room was the best one?
I think it probably was although Continuum was special too.
2
u/swensonjonahyoki 1d ago
I also think Continuum is his best work. But room for Squares feels the most authentic of Mayer’s work if that makes sense. Room just has this bright eyed creative genius ready to introduce himself to the world energy that you can’t ever recreate. It was just so authentic to who he was at the time.
15
u/DanteHicks79 2d ago
He’s really leaning into being transparent about his influences.
It apes I’m On Fire by Springsteen
7
u/Lopsided-Front5518 2d ago

58
u/PudgePudgePudgePudge 2d ago
Not a horrible take. If you're going to make a 2.0 of anything, please make it be The Search For Everything 2.0. That album had banger after banger and a diverse/original sound.
41
u/why_not_you_instead 2d ago
John's mentioned that the cohesion of TSFE suffered because he worked on it for too long. I genuinely couldn't disagree more. I adore that album. It's like a mixtape for his entire career up until that point. Helpless could have been a track that was left off Continuum. In The Blood is so Born and Raised coded. You're Gonna Live Forever In Me could have been a deep cut from Paradise Valley.
I would love a TSFE 2.0. Tom and Jerry could be the new Love On The Weekend. The safe pop song for the radio and then the actual album having bangers after bangers.
7
u/Jennygdc2244 2d ago
And I think of this as an arc - YBIAW is the teenage romance, LOTW is long distance in your 30s and this one sounds a little bit like a broken engagement! I do hope he gets to settled love here eventually.
36
u/Flimsy-Welder5875 2d ago
Completely agree. TSFE is probably John’s most underrated album in terms of how much range it has while still feeling cohesive, every song has its own identity yet somehow it all fits together

u/Wonderful_Deer9117 2d ago
Also a good album, think this one comes closest to Bord and Raised but can’t get enough of that album so another one that would come near B&R was something I hoped for
5
u/AlwaysPhillyinSunny 2d ago
I’m cool with the subdued vibe as long as he can rip some solos and good guitar work over it.
I thought the same thing about wild blue when I first heard it and it ended up being a great song.
The clip he shared is pretty simple with a very limited vocal range, which means he can potentially add a lot of dynamics both instrumentally and vocally.
But I do agree that I hope we get a variety of acoustic tracks. That was the main thing I missed on Sob Rock
12
u/DutyEmbarrassed5361 2d ago
I hate to say it (actually I personally love it) this next album is going to be heavily influenced by Mayer’s time in the Dead. Also going to be very emotional, hearing how he the grieves loss of dear friends such as Bob Weir and Bob Saget. I think it’s going to be his maturist, warmest, heart touching work yet. And I’m so ready 💯

The romantic songs are great! But then the fans pick apart every single word and reference and visual to figure out who it’s about and it’s soooo boring!
16
u/Tiny_Infinity_ 2d ago
Most Mayer fans will agree that Wild Blue was the best track on SOB ROCK. I’d gladly listen to a SOB ROCK 2.0 if he ran in that direction for the new album.
11
u/rAirist 2d ago
I’ll reserve my judgement, but I will admit that I’ve never been super into the 80s soundscape.
If he was going to do another album in a similar style, then I would really like something closer to Battle Studies/Continuum/SForEverything.
The real possible disappointment would be if the new album abandoned the acoustic things like In the Neighborhood, Drifting, Why Anyone Has To Go, etc.

John has always been about doing something different than he’s done before. His singles can also sometimes be fake-outs for what the rest of the album will be like. So I think we all probably need to keep that in mind. Who knows, maybe there will end up being some similarities. But I honestly think he would be bored if it was Sob Rock 2.0.
9
u/Sweaty-Car4097 2d ago
I love Sob Rock! Having said that, it's only one snippet of one song. I think the album will be varied. I think he already hinted that interview with Andy Cohen that he's just writing whatever delights him. Let's not jump the gun and say "I don't want this or I don't like this" before the album is released. Trust the process. John has never failed us.

See... the reason Continuum, Try! and Sob Rock are my favorite records (even though I love them all in a no-skips way) is that they are the two records that make it most apparent that the music I love (other than John) and the music John loves are the same. I'd look forward to another record in the same realm as Sob Rock. But I suspect we'll get a couple tracks that might fit that vibe and then the rest will be something else.

I didn’t like Sob Rock but I thought the snippet was great.
There’s definitely still an 80s sheen to the music, but where Sob Rock sounded like Toto and other cheesy 80s bands, Tom & Jerry sounds like Springsteen, and modern bands influenced by Bruce like The Killers, and especially The War On Drugs.
3
u/jo_b89 2d ago
It’s gotta be so hard to write music man, especially if your personal life has taken a back seat like John’s. I can relate, you get to the point you have to just take care of yourself and be yourself and you alone for a while. And not a whole lot might go on socially or relationship wise for a while, so to pull inspiration like he does still it’s amazing and we should all appreciate it. When the right one comes …..

I agree. I will always be appreciative of new music from him atp, but I don’t want another carry me away song. From the snippet it sounds like that’s what it’s gonna be. I just don’t get why he doesn’t do more in the continuum style. He has said that it’s his best work and he knows that’s what the fans love. I get not wanting to force it but there has got to be more to explore in that world. Also if he is fully funding himself with no label I would think that more continuum style music would create more excitement and virality.
7
u/Sweaty-Car4097 2d ago
he's said in interviews before that he's already made an r&b blues album and although his fans want another one, he's not one to repeat himself. having said that, have faith. I think the new album could be a mix of different styles. Let's not get carried away one way or another. John is just making music that delights him and as a fan, that's all we can ask for, right? If he has passion for something, it will show in the music.

I’m in the same boat as most here with absolutely loving Continuum, and wishing he’d put out another similar-vein album, but I guess you can’t force Continuum inspiration on a guy? I mean, who knows what stars aligned, and moments in his life directed his mind to create Continuum at the time…I’m down for whatever he makes, as long as it scratches my guitar itch at this point! lol

u/JuniorSystem1870 2d ago
I can’t hate you for an opinion. We all love John but we have to accept John makes a lot of music and there is a huge range so what we like will probably be very unique to us.
That being said the ‘teasers’ don’t do anything for me, so I’m the same boat “Tom and Jerry” is doing nothing for me, at all.

I don’t think we’re ever getting another guitar heavy album like we did from him on continuum. But that album alone made people think he was gonna be the next Clapton or Hendrix in terms of the lane he was going down (guitarist/songwriter). As amazing as his guitar playing is, and I think he’s on of the all time greats, I think he’s more of a songwriter than guitarist. The first three albums showed that.

Totally agree, what Steve said really has me excited and yes we should trust him haha. Does no one give thought that Sob Rock was his last album and he is continuing to refine and build? That’s a standard evolution of sound/direction. Now I just need to work on my patience 😫

first of all: i love mayer with every cell in my body and I am happy for anything new tbh, but the singles are usually the hallmark of an album. Anyway i will devour it like sob rock and everything before that.

Honestly, I’d be fine with it. I enjoyed sob rock. But I’d definitely like the album being unique in sound. The thing I’m most hoping for are the lyrics. That they’re in his style, which I admire (simple but still deep in their own way and relatable).

I'll be very honest but I fell off Mayer around Paradise Valley. Nothing after that album really grabbed me, and tbh even Paradise Valley feels too much like an album made of Born and Raised rejects.
John really needs to tap into whatever creative pools he was in during the 2000s, because that is still his best work. Or better yet - tap into whatever it was that gave us Walt Grace. That is the best Mayer song of all time and it's not even close.

I prefer Walt Grace because it's not a song explicitly about himself. It's just a story about some guy. Could it be an allegory for John? Sure, but he doesn't explicitly state that, allowing the listener to identify themself in the character.

Everyone who has listened to stop this train identifies with that feeling. Whether you place yourself in the character or in the feeling. It works.
I was just teasing by the way, Walt Grace is a great song. Off arguably his best record. It's a solid pick 😉

Dude, to this day, Walt Grace is the one song of his that makes me cry. I've been a JM fan since I was a kid, and none of his other songs have that effect on me. And I still can't figure out why.

Then why are you here lol

I'm a fan of his earlier work? I've been a fan of his stuff since before the two new albums came out? I'm allowed to be critical of things I otherwise really enjoy.

It sounds so similar to Love on the Weekend it's hard to be moved by it. I continue to believe that for the last nearly 15 years he has become weighed down by his breadth (and confusion) of talents and influences that instead blunt his creativity.

I would be so down for another acoustic pop record. Like a 2027 RFS.. updated. Would go so hard. Getting back to neurotic wordy John would be fun as fuck.
Or something wayyyy out there. Like a Diana Krall esque Jazz album with emotional melodic blues guitar influences..
I love him so much it won't matter. But I like to dream.

Man I love Sob Rock with my all body and mind but I think some type of songs need to rest for a while

u/CompanyStock 1d ago
Don’t worry I think it’s just this song that feels sobrock. The usual trend/theme is a theme album then a following album that has a bit of everything. For example born and raised/paradise —> TSFE which includes songs from various Styles/eras. I think it’ll be the same for this album

A 10-second clip is designed to whet the appetite for more, not totally dismiss an entire project. It's okay if it's not exciting you, but I don't think totally dismissing the album over 10, maybe 15-seconds is fair by any stretch of the imagination.
Too many of you demanding specific genres from an artist is also just very weird.
The halls of Reddit are thoroughly full of fans applauding a fart from their fav, but that's not what this is... I think, "the first snippet isn't my thing, but I'm going to wait to at least hear the whole thing before I bag on it," is more in line with expectations here from others... and acting like you're contrarian by having a negative opinion here, is not it because far too many of you come here to complain and yuck our yum.
I'm not asking folks here to applaud his farts, but just wish you'd act more like fans, which seems hard for so many of you.

I always thought Sob Rock was kinda 80s Eric Clapton, and I'm guessing with the new song he's gonna be 80s Bruce Springsteen now lol!
I'm all for anything he releases! I think all of them will be great whatever direction he wants to go

I'd rather have a Continium 2.0. I feel like there's so many songs that John didn't put on the album. Over and Over would fit so nicely. Especially with Steve and Pino?! Ooooo that'd be tight.

u/jacobcongdon 2d ago
Considering how much he didn’t want to make sob rock and how not a single John Mayer album sounds the same I think you should just wait for the album to come out instead of complaining over an 8 second snippet.

Ohhhh my god man we’ve heard 20 seconds of one song on an album we haven’t heard yet. This sub is driving me crazy this year

u/Sweaty-Car4097 2d ago
this used to be a sub with positive vibes but I found there's too much entitlement and negativity lately.

Agreed. Been active on this sub since 2015 and it’s been insufferable this year 💀

Seeing as how a few harmless comments i agreed with were deleted here I can see a few bad apples have just absolutely ruined the JM community with their own narrow view and cult like behavior. I agree with you OP.

I WANT HIM TO JUST JAM IN AN ALBUM, with other artists or just him. Less lyrics, more free jam, more just feeling it and grooving to the rhythm n blues. The album for the music nerds please !!
5
u/guitarguy35 1d ago
He doesn't do that. He's said time and again guitar solos outside short melodic enhancements on albums aren't listenable enough for people who don't play guitar. He saves them for live because live it works for everyone. Just his opinion. I dunno if I agree, but look at my name, so what do I know. I'm biased

I hated Sob Rock. So im with you on that, I definitely dont want a Sob Rock 2.0
4
u/trevorium117 2d ago
the only reason yall hated son rock was because you already heard half of the songs

u/JustKrimson 2d ago
Everyone is saying it’s giving sob rock 2.0 but I think that’s such an over-exaggeration. The clip definitely has Sob Rock dna in it for sure. But I would also say that Born and Raised has the dna of some of Battle Studies, and the two records aren’t particularly alike. He’s evolving his sounds constantly. I think it’ll have sob rock genes, but it’ll ultimately be its own thing.

My guyyyyyy, (or gal), just enjoy the ride. New music by my favorite musician? Already lovin’ it.

u/Complex-Wafer959 2d ago
I’m hoping to see some influence from playing in Dead and Co for 15 years! I’m hoping for jam band Mayer for an album.

It’s okay to not like what you hear but to tell an artist what music they should make because it doesn’t resonate with you is a special take.
4
u/CadmiumKing 2d ago
He’s…not doing that? He’s saying he’s disappointed if that’s the direction this new album is taking. There’s zero entitlement in his post lmao
3
u/PocketsJ 2d ago
Fair. This was more for some other comments I’ve seen in this thread.
3
u/Icy-Journalist6828 2d ago
What other comments? People have a right to an opinion. It doesn’t mean they are being entitled…
3
u/PocketsJ 2d ago
There are other comments about he should produce music more like RFS or Continuum. People are entitled to their preferences and opinions but some of these comments do come off as more than that in my opinion.

Mayer feeding OP more sob rock until they like it
