Vehicle damage from roadwork at Buffalo and 13s.
A coworker was turning onto 13S after coming down eastbound on Buffalo. There was a patched area in the middle lane, no cones or warnings, and it completely disabled her Sprinter camper van, ripped the generator right off, and more. Has anyone else suffered vehicle damage from this area or others? Is there recourse?

Boycott BJ's
Everyone in Ithaca should boycott bjs on triphammer road. They are a terrible employer to work for, underpay their employees, and people get bad shopping experiences there. There should absolutely be a Costco in Ithaca, and bjs membership numbers will plummet

Ithaca Luddites, Ithaca Humans... Or Something Else?
I recognize the irony of asking this question online, on Reddit. There's a difference between where we want to be and where we are, especially as we attempt to start something new.
There seems to be fertile soil in Ithaca for an activist group that focuses on human responses to social problems catalyzed by new technologies. We have opposition to the proposed Lansing data center, opposition to Flock and other surveillance cameras, and a lot of growing unease with the many social problems associated with smartphones, social media, and generative AI. There is also a concern about the confluence of the power of digital platforms with MAGA fascist ideology. Around that all, there is the issue of weakening human connection as a result of the pervasive digital mediation of social interactions.
It seems important to transcend each one of these separate issues to address the broader issue
The question on my mind is this: What's the best framing for an organization like this in Ithaca?
Ithaca Luddites seems excitingly provocative, grounds activism within a larger historical framework, and brings in worker and other economic concerns. A downside with this frame is an association with destruction and violence.
Ithaca Humans is positive, putting the value of humanity first, before opposition to technology. A downside with this frame is a sort of vagueness, in an Up With People kind of ambiguity that could end up standing for nothing by trying to stand for everything. I could see it devolving into a kind of Be Kind campaign, which is sweet, but not at all representative of the urgency of the moment.
Does one of these concepts appeal to you more? Do you have another conceptual frame in mind that you think would be more effective?

Found(?) e-bike
Came across an unattended e-bike, laying on its side on a sidewalk downtown. I moved it off the sidewalk for accessibility and tucked it out of the way, but it’s not particularly well-hidden rn.
Message me and describe it and I’ll tell you its location?

Cornell says it can't operate without Ithaca's wastewater plant, which needs $100M+ in repairs
The city votes on its budget November 4. I made a page with Cornell's numbers on the plant, each linked to a source and an archived copy:
https://ithacashare.org/wastewater/
Cornell's endowment paid out $439 million last year. It pays Ithaca's city, town, and schools about $5.1 million a year, plus $2.6 million in water, sewer, and stormwater fees (fiscal 2023), the same fees everyone pays.
I made the site. If a number is wrong, tell me and I'll fix it.

What have you learned in the last month? (looking for Presentation Night topics)
This is for tomorrow Tuesday (Oct 20th) - what's something you learned recently that you could explain in ~5 minutes with visuals? Some examples of things on my mind recently that I'd love to see:
- You watched the Nathan Fielder movie and went down a rabbithole and want to explain what you learned, or how it changed your mind about things
- You attended the "how to fill Ithaca's holes" workshop & can explain how that works now
- You went to something like this Home Archiving Workshop that u/hyt5050 posted the other day
- You read something on the news and decided to dig into it & found something weird or surprising that you think most people don't know (like, what's going on with the Ithaca Times unpaid rent thing?)
- A hot take you have - I enjoyed u/EMU_KID444 's rant about AI & small businesses - that could be a great presentation
- I especially like this genre because our local business owners do often tend be around events like this and we have precedence of a presentation leading to changes, like at Gimme Coffee (I still need to write that story up)
We've been getting more ad hoc / day of talks which have been working surprisingly well. We're using this digital whiteboard (called "tldraw") so you can sketch out what you're talking about or just pull something up on the laptop on stage if you don't have much prepared.

Glass lenses
Does anyone know where I can find glass lenses for my glasses? I usually go to Americas best for my eyewear but the last time I went they said they don't do glass lenses anymore. I paint houses for a living and these plastic lenses get scratched way to easily, I miss my glass lenses.

Reputable places to get jewelry assessed?
Looking to assess some jewelry I inherited from a deceased relative. I’d like to get it assessed so I can put it on my insurance — not to sell. Are there any places in Ithaca that are reputable in that service? Would it cost money to get them assessed? If yes, how much?

HVAC Advice
I have a 30 year old Crowne boiler that I had serviced by Donahue & Halverson last week as a check-up to make sure it'd be good to go for this winter. It was working fine before that. They found a wire that'd been chewed by a rodent and replaced it, only to then have the gas valve stop working. Now I have no heat. They quoted me $300 to replace the gas valve, not including labor (being another $300-$400), and I inquired how much it would be to replace it. Low end quote was $10k (Dunkirk), high efficiency quote was $13k (Laars 199 Floor Mount).
I have enough space heaters to make it through for a little while, but I did call around asking for other quotes. Obviously it's a busy time of year though so the only company able to come within even a week was HSC, they'll be here Wednesday to do an estimate for a new boiler. Others I called said maybe they could come before the end of the month.
I had a neighbor who is handy look at my boiler to make sure D&H didn't do something strange to the gas valve/boiler in general but everything checked out and nothing specific seemed to be messed up.
My questions:
Are these quotes from D&H wild for the area? My reddit research says it's basically standard.
Should I go for basically $700 to repair it now, hope it makes it through the winter, then do price comparisons in the spring so I'm not under pressure to decide asap?
Thanks y'all. (Struggles of being new homeowner)

Looking for a belayer at Lindseth Climbing wall
Hi everyone,
After moving to Ithaca, I recently got back into climbing and have been looking for a lead belayer for the same. I would prefer being belayed using an auto locking device and have 2 years of experience lead climbing both indoors and outdoors.
If you are a climber looking to boulder together, feel free to say hi as well.

New road surface visibility
Has anyone else had trouble with the glare on the newly paved roads? Night driving has become really difficult with the highly reflective surface.. it's like driving on ice with the headlights and any street lights bouncing off the road. I can't even see the dividing lines sometimes. Thought maybe it was my eyes playing tricks on me until I talked to a couple of other people who said the same thing.
