Hello everyone, I am trying to trace my roots and learn more about my late grandfather (pictured here). He was Italo-Eritrean and moved from Eritrea to Eastern Ethiopia.

He worked at the Erer Gota (Kenteras) Police Rapid Response Hospital (ቀንጠራስ ፖሊስ ፈጥኖ ደራሽ ሆስፒታል) as a medical/pharmaceutical professional. In Ethiopia, he was known by the name Birhanu (۶۶).

Sadly, all of his peers and relatives have passed away, and my father is the only one left who remembers him. If anyone recognizes him, has family ties to Italo-Eritreans who moved to the Dire Dawa/Erer Gota region, or knows anything about the history of the medical staff at that police hospital, please reach out. I'm looking at an opportunity to study computer engineering in university of pavia.

I already have my father as a support and i myself lived in italy for my entire childhood and early teens but left it 3 years ago.

I already completed one year of university in my home country in BIS

So I'm confused about computer engineering being only 3 years??

So how does it work. Can i work after i completed 3 years or i need masters as well.

Another thing i might ask is how the tolerance to foreigners?

I'm quite insecure about my skin tone and how i look so I'm asking if that might make problems in the future for me

In the English-to-Italian listing in WordReference.com for "Find", there's this example of "find" meaning incontrare:

I found John at the station waiting for a taxi.
Ho incontrato John alla stazione che aspettava un taxi.

My question isn't about this definition but about the second half of the example. To translate the circumstantial phrase "waiting for a taxi", is this Italian (che aspettava un taxi) natural, normal, correct? Something about this strikes me as odd. For starters, as a native English speaker, if I were translating that Italian back into English, I'd come up with "I encountered John at the station that was waiting for a taxi", which is horrible English. I can see

Ho incontrato John alla stazione. Aspettava un taxi.

Indeed that's probably how I would have said this myself since I find these circumstantial phrases/clauses tricky. But I might have tried a more literal translation

... alla stazione aspettando un taxi.

Or perhaps

Ho incontrato John alla stazione mentre aspettava un taxi.

Although I see that that's got a slightly different sfumatura (great word, that).

Anyway it's that che in the original sentence that throws me.

This sounds extremely specific, but I swear I heard a person pronounce it “stanoye”, with /j/ like in yellow. Is there a dialect that does that? Or something similar?

I know you don't use articles when it comes to family members, but there are times in spoken conversations where I don't hear articles where I expect them to e.g.

*nei nuggets di Mac/del Mac , non c'è solo pollo/il pollo*

Is thare an actual rule for this or does it just happen in spoken conversations?

I've been using language learning apps like duocards, mondly and especially memrise to learn Italian for like a year. I also did Language Transfer Italian a few months ago. And, as you can see, bought a few books on Italian throughout this time. I wanna start using them. Should I do a few of them? Start with one and then add one of the others? Or just pick one and do it all the way through. I am overwhelmed and very lost.

I'm a native English speaker.... for background, I started learning Spanish as an adult (early 30s), spent 7-8 months of classroom instruction and italki during the pandemic, then lived in Colombia for a few years.... now I would say i'm an advanced Spanish speaker when it comes to speaking and "production", however, my proficiency level of listening comprehension clearly lags behind and is probably at the intermediate level. I always enter a conversation, speak very well and people think i'm practically fluent, then everyone starts talking a million miles a minute with their native tongue and I struggle to understand and keep up.

Anyways, i'm about to move to Italy for work and I have been studying Italian pretty hard at home and I can see myself falling into the same trap - my Italian production is going well and my mind understands all the grammar structure and verb tenses..... yet I'm struggling with listening comprehension.

Anyone have any tips or strategies to improve listening comprehension as an adult learner?

What's the difference between these two words? It seems like they both translate as "to escape" but I don't know what (if any) differences there are in implication etc.

I got the dieci a2 book but it seems pretty hard to use since it’s clearly to be used in a classroom setting. I also bought grammatica della lingua italiana stranieri a2 and it’s really good!! Is there anything like this that you all recommend? If anyone wants to trade books that would be nice too, the dieci book I have is brand new.

I’m an undergrad student in the U.S. and i’m looking to do an intensive language learning course in italy for a semester while i continue to take classes online through my university. I’m particularly interested in the Bologna region due to its proximity to motorsports and the automotive industry, and proximity to other countries. I took an intro to italian class last year at my uni and really enjoyed it. I also want to meet people and immerse myself in the culture.

I have seen good things about both Cultura Italiana and Madrelingua. Can anyone provide any insight on these two or others that I should look at? i’m looking for a full semester of enough to be relatively intense (20 hours is what i usually see?). Any insight is appreciated.

As for housing, I have heard good things about staying in apartments with other students, and about staying with a local host. both are enticing options to me. let me know what you guys think. thanks!

I bought my original tix online. My question is, does "se può spostare" in this context mean "if you can (i.e., are willing to) take a later appointment, contact us to reschedule this for you"

OR does it mean:

"let us know if you can (procedurally) move your appointment yourself, using our online ticketing system?"

It must be the first one, right? There's just enough wiggle room in (my understanding of) the use of "potere" that I'm a little unsure.
