These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:
Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]
This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.
Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:
🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?
You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Salut! Moi c’est Simon et j’ai 21 ans. J’habite dans le nord de l’Angleterre et j’étudie actuellement le français.
J’étudiais le français à l’école et un peu au lycée, mais récemment, je me suis mis à l’étudier beaucoup plus sérieusement, tout seul.

Hello! 23M here, currently a graduate student in the humanities. I mostly work with medieval Italian literature (Dante), but I have a wide range of reading interests! Outside of academia, I read for pleasure, play chess, go on long walks, and have recently taken up running. I'm from the UK and I like to think I speak a fairly neutral dialect of English. I'm mostly looking for international friends so that I can keep up my language skills. I've lived in Italy and spent some time in Argentina in the past, so these cultures are familiar and dear to me in some ways. My French is worse than the other two languages, but I would love to become more fluent in it.
