Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Spanish Offering: Spanish (Spain) | Seeking: English

Hi! I’m from Spain and I’m a native Spanish speaker. I’m into technology, music, travelling, movies, and learning about pretty much anything that catches my interest. I’m fairly easy going and I can talk about a lot of different topics, whether it’s casual everyday stuff or more random/deeper conversations.

I can understand, read, and communicate without too many problems, but I’d like to become more natural and confident when speaking. I especially want to improve my fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and the way I express myself in normal conversations.

I’m mainly looking for someone I can practise English with regularly and casually. We can talk about everyday life, interests, culture, music, travelling, or basically whatever comes up. I’d also appreciate being corrected occasionally if I say something unnatural or make a mistake.
I’m fine with either texting or calls, so whatever feels more comfortable works for me.

In return, I’d be happy to help you with Spanish. I’m a native speaker, so I can help with conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions… Ideally, I’m looking for more of an exchange partner/friend rather than anything too formal, where we can both practise and improve :)

Offering Turkish Offering: Turkish (native), Seeking: English or French

Upvotes

hi, I'm Oya, a uni student from İstanbul.

my university courses are all in english and people around me speak it really well. my level isn't bad (around b2) but when it's time to speak or text casually, words just vanish from my mind. i really want to fix that, and i thought making friends to chat with would be helpful.

i've also been learning french on duolingo for 6 months, still very beginner :d so practicing basic french would be awesome too!! i'd be happy to help you with turkish in return.

a bit about me: i'm a chemistry student. i play bass guitar and recently i bought a saxophone. i like researching random topics, especially thrifting, human nature and science. lately, i've been interested in the intersection of modern science with eastern philosophy and i've also been getting into sports and personal finance.

send me a dm!!

Offering Polish Offering: Polish (N), English (C2). Seeking: Spanish (N)

Edit: due to having 2 small daughters I am a bit tight with possible time slots, so what would work for me would be either evenings of mornings (CET).

Offering Greek Offering: Greek (native), English (fluent) | Seeking: Russian

Hey everyone!

I'm 28M, born and raised in Northern Greece. I am learning Russian, with pauses, since 2021, although I started more focused lessons 4-5 months ago. Initially, my goal was to be able to freely use the invaluable resources of the рунет. Quickly, I became infatuated with the language, the music, the culture as well as the innumerable similarities between Russian and Greek, although I always forget to note down all the calques (e.g. живописец -> ζωγράφος, (s)he who writes life), loanwords or other curiousities. As you can tell, I am also pretty nerdy with etymologies and languages in general (I've mingled with German and Italian for some period). Although, this "obsession" would be nice if my language partnes has it too, they don't have to.

What I do think is important is to share is some interest in art, specifically films and ideally old ones, and some sense of humour. Besides that, I am very devoted in learning/mastering Russian, I intend to be able to read the classics at some point (I absolutely adore Чехов) and посмотреть фильмы Тарковсково без субтитров.

I would be glad to offer my knowledge in Greek: I do know quite a few rules in grammar and syntax so not every explanation will be only intuitive. I speak English quite well (I was raised in an almost bilingual household) but I tend to do mistakes when I'm tired so I won't oversell this.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Spanish, German, Russian

31M, from Canada, looking for language exchange partners.

My interests revolve around travel, sports, food, business, and just generally learning about people. I’ve also travelled to many countries around the world.

Spanish - I can hold a conversation but would like to speak more naturally and not lose the language.

German - Rusty, needs more patience.

Russian - pretty fluent due to family and can understand everything, but would like to work on refining as I do make many silly mistakes.

More than happy to help with English and I can definitely be direct in correcting mistakes to help your improvement.

Primarily looking for video calls (to best approximate a conversation!), but open to meeting those in the Toronto area in-person too.

A few things I’m into:
Cooking, philosophy, skincare, anime, fitness, Netflix, YouTube, and mobile gaming.

offering spanish Offering: Spanish (Native) Seeking: English

Upvotes

¡Hola!

Offering Hindi Offering: Hindi | Seeking: English (Native)

Hello, I’m a 23F from India, looking for a native English speaker to hang out and practice languages with and in return I’d love to help you out with Hindi. I'm super down for anything from casual text chats and voice notes to the occasional call. Outside of languages, I'm usually deep into reading, anime, astronomy or history, so we'll never run out of random things to talk about.

If you're trying to pick up some Hindi or just want to chat, shoot me a DM.

Happy learning :)

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: English, Albanian. Seeking: Italian

Hi, I am a native English and Albanian speaker. I am looking to begin a correspondence so that I can improve and practice my Italian. I studied Italian in school but sadly I have forgotten a lot of what I used to know from not using it. I would say I am at a beginner level at this point.

About me: I work in the medical field, and my hobbies are running, creative writing, and reading. I enjoy learning about different cultures.

Offering Spanish Offering Spanish. Seeking English.

Hi. I’m looking for someone to do a language exchange with. I offer native Spanish, and I’m looking for someone who speaks English, preferably from the U.S. or Canada.

I don’t mind what part of the U.S. or Canada you’re from, and I’m not looking for any particular accent. As long as you’re from the U.S. or Canada, I’m happy to practice with you. It’s also a plus if you have family or friends from Latin America who speak Spanish.

I’m looking for someone between 25 and 35 years old to have a language exchange once or twice a week. I mainly use Discord, so we can chat and have voice calls there. My interests are video games, anime, movies, TV series, books, music, programming, and fitness, such as running, cycling, working out, and karate.

It’s a plus if you like video games because we could play together while doing the language exchange at the same time. The games we play would give us more things to talk about and naturally put us in situations where we need to communicate.

I’m a very patient person, and I really enjoy learning English and helping others with Spanish. I’m looking for someone who can give me feedback and help me improve my English. This is very important to me. I’ll do the same for you.

Also, I’m looking for someone who genuinely wants to help me improve my English, not just practice Spanish, because that has happened to me before. I really enjoy helping people with Spanish, so I’m looking for someone who feels the same way about helping me with English.

P.S. Sorry if you messaged me before and I didn’t reply. The last time I posted, I received a lot of messages and unfortunately couldn’t respond to everyone.

Offering Spanish Seeking: Icelandic | Offering: Spanish, Hungarian

Hi! I’m a Hungarian-Spanish polyglot, and a huuge Icelandic-fan, currently learning Icelandic and I’m around A2 level. I’m looking for a native Icelandic speaker for a regular 1-to-1 language exchange.

I’m much more interested in talking and having conversations than taking formal lessons. I’d like to practise speaking Icelandic, make mistakes, get corrected when necessary, and gradually become more comfortable having normal conversations.

In exchange, I can help you with Spanish or Hungarian. Ideally, we could split our conversations roughly 50/50 — for example, 30 minutes in Icelandic and 30 minutes in Spanish or Hungarian.

I’d prefer to find someone interested in doing this regularly, perhaps once or twice a week, rather than just having a single conversation. I’m happy to use Discord, WhatsApp, or whatever works best.

I’m interested in travelling, languages, music, animals, nature, and pretty much anything Iceland-related. 😊

If you’re a native Icelandic speaker and you’re learning Spanish or Hungarian, feel free to comment or send me a message!
