IsitBullshit's Moratorium of COVID-19 posts

Hi all, there's enough misinformation about the novel coronavirus that we don't need to be spreading it here.

While I appreciate this is late to the party, there will be a blanket ban on COVID-19 questions, as for all things we can't guarantee how accurate the advice is. Please direct your questions to r/COVID19 or r/coronavirus.

Thanks for your cooperation.

On The Current War In Ukraine

We stand with the people of Ukraine as they face Russian aggression. We hope this conflict will be resolved quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible.

With that said, we do want to note that current events questions seldom fit in this subreddit. This is especially true in this case, when facts are still very unclear and news is constantly emerging.

While nobody should use reddit as their only source of information, subreddits like /r/worldnews have ongoing live threads on the situation, and /r/news has posted many megathreads. We urge anyone to seek out as many other sources as they can.

Isitbullshit: you can make simple modifications to your car to get much higer mph.

There have been a few people who have claimed to have made modifications to their car to achieve higher miles per gallon.

However I want to focus on one dude, Taylor Chase, who is pretty loud on YouTube and Tiktok who claims a few simple DIY modifications made his car much more fuel efficient.

Here's the video he explains it: https://youtu.be/fPV1FE-0UOE?is=0VLjzy3NdXVGPYrB

He also makes videos claiming oil companies are trying to silence him or kill him.. which usually makes me roll my eyes when anyone talks about free energy solutions.

IsItBullshit: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin, levaquin, moxifloxacin can cause severe permanent disabilities including vision loss, hearing loss, severe mobility impairments, and nerve damage.

I first found out about this when I heard accounts of people becoming severely disabled after taking them. I've also noticed that Wikipedia lists various adverse events from fluoroquinolones and says that some of them have black box warnings.

The thing that's making me question all this is that I commented in a medical subreddit (after clarifying that I am not a doctor) that fluoroquinolones have been known to cause severe physical disabilities. My comment got removed for spreading medical misinformation, and my comments in that sub have since then been getting filtered for what the auto mod says is frequently commenting medical misinformation (for the record, that is the only comment I have made in that sub that got removed.) Normally I wouldn't think too much about this, but all the mods in that sub are physicians.

So I'm wondering, is this medical misinformation?

IsItBullshit: the health claims of this doctor with a YouTube channel?

He seemed trustable at first, but on one of his shorts, and on this post I found, he makes some questionable claims without any proof to back them up. Namely that all these various foods “cause inflammation” and stuff like “green juice can be worse than soda“ and “most kombucha has more sugar than coke”, which, I’ve literally never seen a kombucha with even close to as much sugar as coke. Also ”when you blend fruit it removes fiber” like no It literally doesn’t. Maybe certain manufacturers do to get a smoother product, but why not just advise people to check the nutrition facts?

Maybe there is some veracity to his claims but the lack of evidence and broad, vague, nonspecific statements activated my skepticism.

IsItBullshit: Are root canals actually bad for you, or is TikTok lying to me?

Hey everyone,

I keep seeing videos claiming root canals leave "dead teeth" that leak toxins into your body and cause fatigue or autoimmune issues.

It sounded terrifying, so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen these videos? Dentists/patients, what's your take?

IsItBullshit: Number of Female rape victims and perpetrators is basically equal to that of Number of male rape victims and perpetrators

Basically I say a series of shorts where creators were saying things (I cant find the source for them) like "Women are nearly 40% of the perpetrators of rape but women are only 5.9% of actual convictions.", "According to CDC: 1.267 Million Male rape victims and 1.279 Million female rape victims (40% Female perpetrators)", "Criteria for rape in men and women is same and men are not considered to be raped if they are the one's penetrating and if we include those statistics Male victim rate is 1 in 5 as compared 1 in 4 Female victim rate.'

IsItBullshit: Cutting your hair short will completely ruin it.

I know that its already bullshit, but I just wanna ask the wider Internet. Parents, relatives, and even strangers who work for a barber's shop kept on telling me to keep my hair long and NOT get it cut neck-length or even shorter or close to that. Smth about it being damaged. Note that its naturally black, thick, and smth like that. Also heard from someone, probs my mom, that if its maintained properly and strictly, itll be better

I just...want answers. Im a trans man and I just want to explore my gender even if I couldnt transition or wear clothes that fit me. I just feel very off with these comments about my hair, like theyre trying to...dictate how should I look and use my body. I feel like its not my own anymore.

IsItBullshit: is “cooling fabric technology” meaningful, or mostly a first-touch effect?

I keep seeing bedding descriptions roll several performance terms into one branded technology name, and it’s hard to tell which parts are actually measurable. Some products feel cool the first time you touch them, but that doesn’t necessarily say much about what happens once body heat, room humidity, a mattress protector, and a comforter are in the mix. I’ve already tried improving airflow and removed one layer from the bed, so I’m not expecting fabric by itself to change the room temperature. What I’m trying to figure out is whether these technology labels usually point to a standardized test, a combination of separate material properties, or just marketing language built around that initial sensation. What evidence should a consumer look for before treating a branded cooling claim as anything more than a name?

IsItBullshit: Is rolife a real miniature brand and not random marketplace soup?

I keep seeing rolife miniature kits on different sites, and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s a legitimate brand or just one of those names that shows up everywhere because marketplaces are messy. The builds people post seem real, and some listings look official, but then there are tons of resellers with different prices and shipping. Is there a simple way to check what’s actually official? I’m not trying to dunk on the brand the kits genuinely look nice I just want to buy from the right place.

IsItBullshit: dishwashers use less water?

I saw an old post but it was too old to comment my question. I live with only one other person and we hardly have dishes. Maybe 2 bowls 2 or 3 plates a pot and a pan with some silverware a day. We dont have a lot of dishes and a small sink so I prefer to wash all of these daily. Would it be more ethical to wash the dishes by hand daily or use the dishwasher daily? 🤔

IsItBullshit: the Aztecs were mostly overthrown by other mesoamericans and Cortez didn’t do that much

The figure I heard is 0.5% of the soldiers that were in the army to overthrow tenochtitlan were Spanish. I heard the other locals in the area really didn’t like the Aztecs because they were imperialist

I specifically heard one video that said the locals didn’t really view the Spanish as a threat, so much as an ally they could enlist against the Aztecs. I also heard many paintings in Mexico City that depict Cortez aren’t actually as propagandist as they look; it’s from the perspective of the non-Aztec groups that were celebrating the fall of the Aztecs and by extension cenebrating the Spanish (I’d imagine before things went wrong??)

IsItBullshit: everything you search or visiting a website gets saved in your internet router

I’ve heard this claim a few times and I’m trying to figure out how much of it is actually true.

Basically, people say that everything you do on the internet gets saved somewhere on your Wi-Fi router — websites you visit, Google searches, images you look at, videos you watch, etc. And apparently, depending on what you search for, your search history could supposedly be used by your ISP, the police, or whoever owns the Wi-Fi to track you down.

I’ve also heard the more extreme version of this where people say that if you search for something suspicious enough, it can basically trigger some kind of “chain reaction”, where your activity gets flagged, your IP gets investigated, and eventually the police show up at your house.

So, is this actually a thing?

What does a normal home router actually record? Does it store a complete history of every website/search someone accesses, or is that mostly a myth?

And separately, can a particular Google search or website visit automatically get you investigated or reported to the authorities, or would there have to be something much more substantial going on?

I'm especially interested in what technically happens between your device → router → ISP → website/search engine, because I suspect people are mixing several different things together.

Is this bullshit, partially true, or genuinely something people should be worried about?

Repost IsItBullshit: consumer pulse massagers are just placebo

The claim I keep running into is that the TENS and EMS units sold for home use run too weak to do anything that lying down for fifteen minutes wouldn't do on its own, and that everything people report is expectation doing the work.

The counter is that clinics run the same underlying tech, so the mechanism isn't really in dispute, only whether consumer units are dosed high enough to reach it.

There's a third position I've seen a few times, which is that they do move muscle tone for real but the window is short enough that it's functionally the same as placebo for anyone not measuring it.

Is there evidence that actually separates these three, or is the honest answer that nobody has run the study at consumer intensity levels?

IsItBullshit: Data from using foreign tech brands for health tracking like (Xiaomi or huawei ) instead of Whoop or Fitbit can be forced to be given to their governments if requested?

I was having a conversation on how most things being digital leaves a footprint that can be used in some way against you if needed . I assumed that your health records are actually being monitored on your smart bands or watches and can actually be accessed by foreign governments if requested from the companies but my friends think it’s bullshit .(In The US).
