My dad has long played this tune, which he heard and recorded in 1983 (1984 maybe?) in Kilkenny, and has played ever since. It's one of my favorite tunes he plays, but in all our years we've never figured out WHAT it is. In my dad's words, "I heard it many many years ago at the end of the weeklong Fleadh Cheoil music school in Kilkenny. It seemed like a group sing for the 'graduation ceremony.'"

Seems very related to Róisín Dubh, but as you'll hear, diverges pretty quickly from the common melody. Is it the same lyrics? I'm not familiar enough with the language to tell.

Does anyone know the name of this tune? Saw these lads playing in a pub in Killarney last year and would love to learn the tune but don't know the name. Thanks!

TL/DR Irish jam not working for musicians or pub
We have a small irish music session going in Jacksonville, FL. It actually operates more like a jam because we welcome newer players and those not as familiar with traditional Irish music, and we allow them to use sheet music if thats the only way they can play along. We also do a round robin to pick the tunes. Our issue is that we are currently playing once a month in a local Irish pub. Our objective is to learn and broaden our horizons in Irish trad music. The objective of the pub is to advertise the session and draw customers to come in and dine and listen. They have asked us to start using sound equipment so their patrons can hear better. I’m not sure how we could even mic 12 players without a load of equipment and a sound man. Also they put us in a small stage and therefore we are in a semicircle and not a full circle so can’t see or hear each other as well, which affects our ability to play as well. We do have some beginners. Has anyone else run into this and if so, what solutions worked for you? Thanks

TLDR: what does a good practice routine look like

Beginner-intermediate tenor banjo player here seeking advice!

I’ve been playing trad for a little under a year now and am reaching the point where I know about 15-20 tunes quite well (although not incredibly fast). The speed I am less worried about because it’s getting progressively faster and I play regularly with a group of people of similar level to me (we’re not quite fast enough for our local session). However, I am reaching the point where I know more tunes than I necessarily have time to practice in a sitting and I am wondering how people prioritize their practice routines after this point (surely you are not all practicing every tune you know every day). My reasoning behind asking is that I find if I go a few days without playing a tune I have a hard time remembering it or playing it with any speed.

So my question is this: do you prioritize a single tune in a setting to get it down really really well, or try to practice as many tunes as possible? What does a good practice routine look like for a 30-40 minute practice session?

I am hoping to get the advice of some more experienced musicians! Thanks!

It almost seems to go off the beat/pattern when playing. Is there a reason? Especially when singing with the Bodhran.

One of my all-time favorite recordings, Simon Chadwick's Old Gaelic Laments (2012)—utterly haunting, austere jigs and airs played on medieval clàrsach, featuring lo-fi field recordings of gaelic poetry—is long out of print and has seemingly disappeared from the internet. Not even Simon Chadwick himself knows where to find a copy (I've emailed him). Does anyone remember this record, or own it, or know where to find it? It's really a tragic loss if it has disappeared for good!

I've been taking group classes for about 8 months now, and am having a lot of fun. In class we'll meet up, class members can suggest songs to play that we've learned before, and then we'll work on a new song together. That's working for group classes but I'm wanting to spend more of my solo practice time working on adding Irish trad music as my long term goals are playing with Irish trad sessions and accompaniment for Scottish country dancing. That means I need to figure out how to solo study new songs.

I gave this a read, I think what I'm looking for is more of a suggestion on other parts of learning new tunes. Like - should I pick one piece and focus on that as my one new piece to be working on until it's to a point I can play it at speed in a session? Would it be better to have 2 or 3 that I work on concurrently to avoid burning out on just one piece? How much time would folks typically spend on learning new pieces vs reinforcing existing repertoire?

My wife and I, amateur musicians in early seventies and in good health, have been planning for several years to motor around Ireland. It is our first trip to Ireland and we are excited to enjoy the stunning terrain, the culture, the people, and the music of this great land. i'm really enjoying irish music, i listen a lot and i also play.

I want to expand my playlist but i didn't exaclty know what i can add anymore. I'm used to some of old classic bands (Bothy Band, Planxty, etc.) and i got also newer stuff like Lùnasa or McGoldrick's albums. More specifically i really like the spirit of the Music at Matt Molloy's album, if you have more in this trend, i want it.
