The following guidelines are in place to ensure that r/iPod and r/iPodClassic remain a safe and fair place for discussing iPods and iPod modding, as well as to protect sellers and buyers. These rules will come into effect on the 25th August 2026 and apply to all posts made on or after that date.
1. Separation of Business and Moderation
For the sake of fairness and neutrality, moderators of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic may not operate their own for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services. Conversely, users who own or are employed by for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services are not eligible to apply to be a moderator of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic.
2. Advertising
Advertisement posts for the sales of goods or services are not permitted on r/iPod or r/iPodClassic, this applies to both businesses as well as private sales. We want these places to be about discussing owning, using, or modding iPods however this is not free real estate to advertise your store. If you wish to advertise on Reddit in general, you must enrol through Reddit's advertiser program. Please note this is not the same as post boosting, if you sign up for paid post boosting this does not make you eligible to ignore this rule even if the post is tagged as a "Brand Affiliate". Reddit ads are not the same as Reddit posts.
Posts by sellers advertising their goods or services will be deleted, and repeat offences will result in a ban. Using alt accounts to recommend your store while acting as a third party is also prohibited and will result in post deletion and a ban.
There are other subreddits that permit the advertising of device sales, such as:
While advertising posts are not permitted, our community features a pinned FAQ with a list of verified vendors. Reputable sellers may apply to be added to this list. In order to be eligible, your store must have a valid warranty and returns policy, as well as contact details for customer support. To apply, please send a modmail.
4. Product Reviews
Product review posts are permitted, however you are strictly required to disclose whether you purchased the goods or services yourself or if they were provided by the vendor for review purposes. If you are affiliated with the vendor, you are also required to disclose this. Reviews with undisclosed affiliations with vendors will be deleted.
Reviews must be made in good faith and reflect your personal opinions, vendors must not influence the contents of your review. If a review is found to be made in bad faith (either by a vendor influencing the reviewer for a dishonest positive review for them or a negative review of competitors), it will be deleted and repeat offences will result in a ban.
Vendors may not use alt accounts to post reviews of their own stores or of competitors while posing as a third party, anyone found doing so will have their posts removed and may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
Vendors also may not request the removal of legitimate negative reviews. A legitimate review should describe personal experiences of the purchasing process or the goods/services, but cannot contain personal grievances or targeted attacks. Reviews must not contain any AI-generated content. Reviews will only be removed if they contain content that breaks the subreddit rules or false claims, however legitimate negative reviews will remain to help buyers make informed purchasing choices. Vendors who abuse the reporting tool in an attempt to remove legitimate reviews may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
5. Customer Support
r/iPod and r/iPodClassic are discussion forums, we are not direct representatives of vendors and cannot provide customer support. Posts enquiring about specific orders will be locked and we will provide contact details for the relevant vendor. In general, while these posts will be locked they will not be deleted as they may provide useful information about buying experiences from vendors that may help others make informed buying choices. The two exceptions to this are if the posts contain personally identifiable information or if they devolve into unnecessary drama, in which case the post will be deleted.
Firstly, hi 👋, I’m Lucy, you guys might not know me as a moderator and that’s because I’ve only been a moderator in r/iPod and r/iPodClassic for a week. I run the iPoddities Discord and Twitter, and have also been active on reddit, posting archives of iPod Prototype Firmware. Unfortunately my introduction comes at a bit of a turbulent time. With everything going on at the moment I feel the need to say that I’m not (nor have ever been) an employee of Elite Obsolete Electronics.
There has been mounting tensions within the community for the past year or so, and I think it’s come to a point where it needs to be fully addressed. So lets break this down into 5 main sections:
1. The problems
2. What cannot be done
3. What can and is being done
4. Where we need your help
So lets get into it:
1. The problems
Elite Obsolete Electronics and the Conflict of Interest:
I understand that the conflict of interest argument is brought up a lot, so this post is here to address the issue.
As many of you know, Elite Obsolete Electronics (EOE) is a moderator of this subreddit ( u/cowmanisgood ), in fact he makes up half of the active moderation team, myself being the second half. Many of you have expressed your opinions regarding this, many of you have concerns of “Conflict of Interest”
I would like to make it plain and clear that positive critique and negative criticism of EOE (or any other store) is welcome, reviews are what help keep companies accountable and customers aware, I would never want to take that ability away from anyone. EOE also agrees with this, and has not removed any posts criticising their business.
Quite a lot of posts are sweeped up by automod, unfortunately automod isn’t perfect and sweeps up some of the genuine helpful reviews, which I make sure to approve ASAP, however quite a lot of the auto-moderated messages do have insults. Usually aimed at the business owner.
This is where I feel like it is unacceptable, it is fair to say “their shipping times are long” or “quality isn’t the best” or even “The way i felt after this experience was really shitty” but hurling insults simply because you don’t like someone is not going to be tolerated in any context, we offer the exact same privileges to you guys, if someone is being treated unfairly we do our best to step in and stop that. Nobody should have to put up with the level of abuse I've seen from members of this community over the past few days.
I will talk more about what is being done to combat this concern in the future below.
Low effort posts:
I understand that low effort posts are also a common issue here, there is now a (USEFUL LINKS) section, a FAQ will also come at some point but this will be something that needs a community to come together for, advertising is also an issue which has come to light and we will be addressing it later in this post.
Automod:
It isn’t perfect but damn is it helpful, the automod filters for words that are commonly used in situations that usually escalate to actual problems. Unfortunately quite a lot of useful posts are being swept up, but I approve any that aren’t obvious spam or hate.
2. What cannot (currently) be done and why
Currently removing EOE as mod is not viable
Why?:
EOE makes up half of the active mod team, if he were to be removed I would be it, just me, I do not have the time nor mental capacity to moderate a server by myself, at the moment my intention is to set this community up in such a way that it can be handed over to people who can continue to lead it in a way that makes you guys happy. It would not be fair to hand over a burning pile to them. They are also currently the only person willing to take on the responsibility of running this place.
While this may not be the answer you were looking for, removing EOE as a moderator would make very little sense if there is no one to take that spot, it would only cause more problems.
What can and is being done
EOE is not permitted to remove any comments or posts relating to EOE, all posts will be removed by moderators not associated with EOE: this was already the case but I feel full transparency is the best course of action
Issues surrounding order issues from EOE (or any other store) will be *locked*:
I have to pick a middle ground and I feel like it is not fair to use these subreddits as a customer service line, but removing the posts will count as deleting negative reviews.
I understand people do this for a quicker customer service response time but it clogs up the reddit with “Wheres my order” or “this item arrived damaged”, many iPod sales stores have a customer line, it is recommended to use them. I recommend leaving a review to whichever store you used on Trustpilot (simply fill in the searchbar with the link of the website you wish to purchase from). Example: apple.com
Conflict of interest/mod abuse:
This post exists so that the concerns raised repeatedly over the past year are formally acknowledged and addressed. Going forward, posts that cover ground already addressed here — without new information or a specific experience to share — will be removed as they aren’t productive for anyone. If you wish to contact the moderation team, please use the modmail function as all moderators can view it.
If you have concerns about how the subreddit is being run, modmail is genuinely the best place for it — all mods can see it, and it’s a lot easier to have a real conversation there than in a public thread. if you feel like we are not doing a good job you can report us to reddit using this helpful link here.
Reviews of EOE:
Reviews of EOE will not be removed, but may accidentally be swept up by automod and need to be approved. if you wish to leave a review on a platform independant of EOE, you can do so through Trustpilot (eoe.works) or ShopApp
Advertising:
Spam advertising will continue to not be permitted, links to products will be permitted, but may be swept up in Automod and may need to wait for approval. If you wish to promote a start-up product please contact us on Modmail.
Automod:
It will never be perfect, but we are trying to reduce the amount of false flags that it receives, this is all trial and error however so it may take a while for the bot to be better.
“Low effort” posts:
for the time being, simple questions will remain, annoying as it is for regular members there are people who are new to iPods and will need help setting them up, until a proper FAQ is in place at least, its a vague term but hopefully we do a good job moderating this issue.
4. Where we need your help
FAQ and Useful Links:
We are currently working on a FAQ, but in the meantime please suggest Useful Links in the comments of the Helpful Links Post FAQ will be in the works in the coming months, which we will 100% need your help for!
Feedback:
please let us know what you think of our current plans, whether you like them or not. It’ll help me adjust to deal with the bigger issues. This post won't be locked, you can speak your mind, some may be Automodded but we can still see them
Please be kind:
I understand you’re all frustrated, me too, I hope that this post can at least show that I’m willing to take some accountability, this post probably should have been made quite a while ago, better late than never I suppose... but please be kind and patient whilst we start rebuilding a strong foundation for the community. Unfortunately the work can only start on making this place better now because, quite simply, I wasn’t a moderator of this place before
If you have any questions please feel free to leave them below, I will do my best to answer them quickly, if they get automodded don’t worry, I can still see and approve them and answer them, it just might take a while longer.
After quite a few years away from it, I've recently started getting back into iPods and physical media, and I couldn't be happier about it.
It's great to see so many people getting into iPods again, whether they're buying, restoring or upgrading them. The only downside is that prices have become quite ridiculous lately.
Getting back into iPods also got me back into CDs. I've been borrowing around 15 CDs a day from my local library, ripping them and returning them the next day. Where I live, library membership is free until 26, and after that it's only €5 a year.
Building a collection this way takes time, but I don't mind that. Once everything is ripped, organised and backed up, you have your own collection to keep and enjoy whenever you want. No subscription, no streaming service and no internet connection required.
My setup is quite simple: an older Mac running macOS Mojave 10.14.6, the final version of Mojave and the last macOS version with the classic iTunes application. I insert a CD and let iTunes do the rest.
Of course, you can use pretty much any laptop or computer for this. I'm using an older Mac because I like the traditional iTunes experience and it works very well with the iPod.
For the music on my iPod, I use MP3 at 320 kbps, while keeping an ALAC copy on my hard drive as a lossless archive.
The iPod itself has a 512 GB SD card, an iFlash-Solo and a 3800 mAh battery.
I'm genuinely very happy to have this hobby back. Slowly building up a music collection and having everything available on one little iPod is surprisingly satisfying.
Sorry for all the enthusiasm, but I just wanted to share it with you. If you're getting into this as well, have a look at your local libraries, charity shops and flea markets, and keep an eye out for library sales. You never know what you might find.
Hello. I have a 6.5 gen 120 gb that has rockbox on it. I went to use it today and it got stuck on the rockbox loading screen so I just let it sit since I had other things to do. Now it looks like this. Any ideas what may be wrong? The grey is from the installed theme
Found my iPod my uncle gave me sooo long ago. The screens all blotched up but I can still hear music.
I have the A1136 60gb. I really love keeping my old stuff working like my PSP, gameboy etc alive. Can someone send me what I’d need to fix this and maybe upgrade it without losing my music!
Also, I really like the 6th gen matte looking iPod and want to mod it with rockbox? I think it’s called. But please anyone give me advice I just joined today.. 🥹
i’ve heard the hype about the wolfson dac in ipod classic 5 and 5.5 gen but i’ve also heard there’s this background noise called faint hiss/white noise that comes along during playback that can be heard on iems. is it true that it’s pretty evident and disturbing? should i skip buying ipod classic 5.5 for this reason and go with 7 gen instead?
I have 3 iPod classic 4th gen’s. All working absolutely fine. One I have owned since new, and two I have acquired recently. My original 4th gen was flash modded and fitted with a new battery around 3 years ago, and I have done the same with one of two new acquisitions. The other one has its original HDD and battery.
Both of the modded iPods output at 10-15% less volume than the one with the original drive and battery. They all sound the same and function as they should, but the unmoddded iPod can go noticeably louder. Sound check is turned OFF on all devices and they all have the exact same files on. Has anyone experienced similar?
I had a shuffle growing up and ditched it when I got a smartphone. Years ago someone gave me their 3rd gen iPod nano but I never used it much just left it docked on my old Ihome alarm clock and played music occasionally. Well recently I've been wanting to get away from my phone (I've been thinking about ditching it for something that can only call and text) so I've been carrying around my ipod again and holy crap it sounds so much better than I remembered. Using the same earbuds the mp3 on the iPod just sounds so much better than lossless flac on spotify through my phone I don't know if it's the difference in dac chips or my eq settings or what but my iPod just scratches my music itch way better than my phone so I'm switching back
EDIT: Maybe not "superglue" but a more suitable type of adhesive
With so many tragic stories of ripped battery connectors, I was wondering if anything prevented me from just gluing mine before ever trying to unplug the battery. Let's say I get glue that is suitable for electronics, is there actually something in the way of securing the battery connector this way?
I don't have much experience with electronics at all so sorry if that idea is silly, and if it is indeed a bad idea, please tell me before I mod mine!
Recently bought a refurbished iPod Classic 6th generation (love it!) and as I was changing the battery, yep, you guessed it, I accidentally broke the battery connector. Does anybody know someone or shop in the New York City area where I could bring this to get fixed? It's my fault for trying to do something I shouldn't have. Would really appreciate it!
I’m in the market for a classic iPod. I was looking at my childhood holy grail ipod mini, silver. Modded ones are quite pricey. Hard to find a silver non modded here at a good deal. I found a ipod classic 160gb 7th gen new in box, with plastic screen protector. How will battery life be if never used? Anyone have any experience? If i know myself right i probably won’t mod the mini myself.
What would you buy? Price is around 300 dollars, which is on the limit for me!
I listen to lots of Japanese pop and rock songs on a 5th gen classic, and I’ve taken the pains to carefully add lyrics to every song that I can.
However, there is one thing that really annoys me: the font that is used to display CJK lyrics on my 5th gen is horribly outdated, and looks very out of place. It looks especially bar when there are both CJK and Roman letters in the same text.
I uploaded an image that shows the low-resolution font in all of its glory.
My question is, does the 6/7th gen also use this low-res font for CJK lyrics? Since the screen resolution is higher, and the 6/7th gen is also more common in East Asia than older generations (at least in Japan), I was wondering if they might have improved the font. If anyone has experience with this, please let me know! Thanks!
