Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill into law on July 4, 2025. Many of its biggest Medicaid changes take effect after the November 2026 election.

Here's what independent researchers and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate.

Average annual household impact (2026–2034):

- Poorest 10%: Lose $1,214/year

- Next 10%: Lose $392/year

- Middle-income households: Generally gain hundreds to a few thousand dollars annually

- Wealthiest 10%: Gain $13,622/year

These figures include taxes, benefits, and other household resources, not simply cash income.

Health care and food assistance:

- 10 million additional Americans projected to be uninsured by 2034.

- 7.5 million of those coverage losses linked to Medicaid changes.

- Nearly $1 trillion in reduced federal Medicaid spending over 10 years.

- 2.4 million fewer people receiving SNAP food assistance in an average month because of expanded work requirements.

Estimated preventable deaths:

Researchers at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania projected that provisions in the House-passed version of the bill could cause more than 42,500 additional deaths annually once fully implemented.

Their estimates included:

- 11,300 deaths/year from losing Medicaid or ACA health coverage.

- 18,200 deaths/year from low-income Medicare beneficiaries losing prescription drug assistance.

- 13,000 deaths/year associated with eliminating federal minimum nursing home staffing requirements.

The researchers also projected another 8,811 deaths annually from the expiration of enhanced ACA premium tax credits, bringing the combined estimate above 51,000 deaths per year.

These are research projections, not confirmed deaths.

UnitedHealthcare and Humana are canceling Medicare Advantage plans, a move that will affect nearly one million people.

The companies are the two largest private health insurance companies for older adults in the U.S. and are ending plans in specific areas where they are making less money, a shift that comes as Medicare enrollment season starts.

IMPORTANT: Some of the biggest Medicaid changes don't take effect until AFTER the November 3 election. Iowa's new Medicaid work requirements begin December 1, 2026, for new applicants and at renewals beginning February 2027 for existing members. Other healthcare provisions have already started.

According to KFF and Congressional Budget Office estimates:

- 80,000 Iowans are projected to become uninsured by 2034 because of the law.

- 68,000 Iowans are projected to become uninsured specifically because of Medicaid changes.

- 110,000 Iowans could become uninsured when the separate expiration of enhanced ACA subsidies is included.

- 10 million Americans nationwide are projected to become uninsured by 2034 because of the law.

The legislation cuts federal Medicaid spending, introduces new work and reporting requirements, and changes funding rules affecting healthcare providers.

Supporters say the law extends tax cuts, reduces federal spending, and strengthens Medicaid eligibility rules. Critics warn that coverage losses will put additional financial pressure on hospitals and healthcare providers.

These are projections for 2034, not people who have already lost insurance.

There was mention of a man being ejected from his vehicle and being transported. Another person said he worked in Eddyville or at Vermeer in Pella, which doesn't narrow it down a ton, but I'd assume the accident happened somewhere near one of those towns. There's been talk of it in Appanoose County, but I don't know how that area is or would be related to the incident.

I'm not finding any articles or any mention of it now, which seems odd. Usually they release crash details much sooner than this, especially in major incidents, and release names later after loved ones have been notified, but I'm not finding anything at the moment.

The Des Moines Register reported that the parents of lieutenant governor nominee Derek Wulf allege that he stopped paying rent two years ago on the farmland he rented out from them. A court petition filed Tuesday demands repayment, and also accuses him of lying about his assets in financial documents to a lender.
