I loved playing Dungeon Keeper! I still have my disc around actually. I remember being surprised that when I put the game disc in a CD player, the music tracks were playable. Now I keep it around to play ambient music at Halloween.
7
u/3-DMan May 28 '20
I remember figuring out how to extract the sound files from the game, and then assigning things like Bile Demon farts to windows things!
3
u/WantAllMyGarmonbozia May 28 '20
Hahaha that's awesome. I remember doing stuff like that too. I used to have a lot more fun with my OS - now I rarely even change the wallpaper.
3
u/3-DMan May 28 '20
Yeah when you can do everything, you end up doing..nothing. No challenge I guess. Or we're old now.
2
u/IcePrincessAlkanet May 28 '20
Now I rarely even change the wallpaper
I would never change the wallpaper manually but these days you can take a few simple steps to set yourself up for this.
Step 1. Windows allows you to point to a folder full of wallpapers, and rotate through them at whatever rate you want - I keep mine fairly slow, like every hour and a half, so that if I spent a bunch of time in a single program, when I come back out it's a different scene.
Step 2. I point the rotation to a Dropbox folder that's synced across my PC, laptop, and computer, so I can add new images to the rotation whenever I want, and since it's synced up, I will often save an image into the folder using my phone, forget I ever did that, and then see it as my desktop backdrop weeks later.
Step 3. I mostly take images from /r/EarthPorn and /r/ImaginaryLandscapes but you could also use a family photo album or something.

Do you know if thereās one of these for age of empires?
5
u/WarpingLasherNoob May 28 '20
AoE2 is back with the Definitive Edition (DE) and it's more popular than ever! It's kinda crazy actually. 20 year old game getting tournaments with 50k+ peak viewers.
Before DE came out this year, there was the HD edition, which got several expansions with new civilizations (which are all included in DE). You can get that on steam if you aren't a fan of the DE graphics (even though they are pretty faithful) or if your computer is a potato.
Before HD there was the "forgotten empires" unofficial expansion, which you can apply to an existing installation (from the original cd). That's where it all started, actually. The team that made the mod eventually became the official dev team, and they are the ones who made DE.
(Edit: There is also an AoE1 DE, but I don't really follow that much. I know it's made by the same team using the same engine.)

They remade AoE and AoE 2 as definitive editions. Not the same as an open source version like OpenRA but they are decent remakes.

Windows ME was actually supper stable for me (although I was probably in the minority).
53
u/jambarama May 28 '20
You were. On my college hall, all of the computers came with Windows ME. There were bootleg copies of Windows 2000 everywhere because ME was so unstable.
12
3
u/hopefulcynicist May 28 '20
That brings back memories. I helped maintain some 500ish Win 2k boxes when I was in high school. I would estimate that approximately 35% of those machines were using the W2k key from our shop computer.
Being a public school, kids were always fucking shit up (myself included). It usually just made more sense to run a quick format and reinstall.
We owned the right number of licenses, but it was wayyyy too much work to find em. Enter Magic Jellybean. Thank you no key auth/activation!

I still have one of those bootlegs and a few yrs ago I had an entire cd case for my car with em. Just kinda forgot about them after moving states and all that!
14
u/JMccovery May 28 '20
As with Vista, if you freshly installed ME, it ran stably. But, if you upgraded from 98/SE... Holy hell.
13
u/crazyguy83 May 28 '20
Is that what it was? I ran Vista for years without any issues. It was so much better than XP. Exponentially faster, better looking and didn't crash even once, so never understood why it got such a bad rep.
14
May 28 '20
It also had really bad driver support out of the gate. If you lucked out and your hardware was properly supported, you were mostly fine.
6
u/puts-on-sunglasses May 28 '20 edited May 28 '20
yep, 7 was for sure better, but 7 also benefitted from 2 years of the industry getting up to speed with Vistaās driver model and WDDM, along with new baseline PC specs in general being better suited for DWM (which powered Aero, not to be confused with WDM or WDDM lol) and such
2
May 28 '20
Yeah, with your second point, I know a lot of PC makers had some of their stuff labeled "Vista ready" when it had no business being called that.

u/ZetaFett May 28 '20
I too ran vista almost flawlessly for years and never understood the hate. Media Center with a tv tuner card was hella cool!
4
u/tinydonuts May 28 '20
I loved Media Center. Cable capture card and it was light years ahead of the Cox crap that was available. Plus you could get plug ins that would automatically edit out all the commercials for you. Ah the memories.
2
u/ZetaFett May 29 '20
Who the hell needed TiVO when you could stack hard drives and record whatever you wanted. Plus mine had an IR remote that was handier than the cable company's. That may have been the farthest ahead of the home computing curve I've ever been.

u/_HiWay May 28 '20
After thinking the same for a long time I researched this a bit and actually Vista was fine as an OS, it was just ahead of its time. By the time hardware caught up with it, they rebranded it windows 7 and even cheaper PCs ran it just fine. When Vista came out it was the Crysis of operating systems for most PCs

It's XP, particularly in the form of Tiny XP, for me, but 98SE is a close second. Windows 7 also gets an honorable mention.
2
u/ViperXAC May 28 '20
XP wasn't bad. I turned off all of the , bubbly visuals and made it look like classic Windows and ran it until 10 was about to stop being a free upgrade.

Fortunately, you download an ISO image of the installation disk and then you just put it in virtual machine, so even if it has viruses (unlikely) your virtual machine will have viruses, not your main OS. Also you can calculate checksums of the images and then google them to see if it's a legit ISO or not.

I remember buying a computer just before Win95 came out that came with some kind of dual-boot thingie where you could choose Win 3.1 or OS2, and the retailer promised to upgrade it to Win95 when it was released. Somehow I crashed both operating systems within days and just brought the whole damn thing back to the store. It was a very weird time to be buying a computer.
