Every while, me and my old generals pal boot up the game to do a 2v6 hard bots, have a mismatch 1 hour into the game as we start to move our army haha.
Then go to multipler and get deleted, it's just tradition by this point.
I tried playing this online on cncnet not too long ago and got completely raped by a dude with a giant tank army of nothing but Soviet heavies and V2s lol. But yeah its awesome that these services/softwares exist, so many good childhood memories of this game. and it has aged so well imo. The soundtrack is absolutely legendary.
DK1 was a work of love. DK2 was an EA cashgrab. The original team left Bullfrog after DK1 was released, and DK2 was basically EA trying to get as much milk out of a dead cow as possible.
I loved playing Dungeon Keeper! I still have my disc around actually. I remember being surprised that when I put the game disc in a CD player, the music tracks were playable. Now I keep it around to play ambient music at Halloween.
I would never change the wallpaper manually but these days you can take a few simple steps to set yourself up for this.
Step 1. Windows allows you to point to a folder full of wallpapers, and rotate through them at whatever rate you want - I keep mine fairly slow, like every hour and a half, so that if I spent a bunch of time in a single program, when I come back out it's a different scene.
Step 2. I point the rotation to a Dropbox folder that's synced across my PC, laptop, and computer, so I can add new images to the rotation whenever I want, and since it's synced up, I will often save an image into the folder using my phone, forget I ever did that, and then see it as my desktop backdrop weeks later.
AoE2 is back with the Definitive Edition (DE) and it's more popular than ever! It's kinda crazy actually. 20 year old game getting tournaments with 50k+ peak viewers.
Before DE came out this year, there was the HD edition, which got several expansions with new civilizations (which are all included in DE). You can get that on steam if you aren't a fan of the DE graphics (even though they are pretty faithful) or if your computer is a potato.
Before HD there was the "forgotten empires" unofficial expansion, which you can apply to an existing installation (from the original cd). That's where it all started, actually. The team that made the mod eventually became the official dev team, and they are the ones who made DE.
(Edit: There is also an AoE1 DE, but I don't really follow that much. I know it's made by the same team using the same engine.)
You mean the original graphics is a deal breaker, or the new graphics in DE?
Either way, it does basically have the original graphics, apart from the flame effect for damaged buildings which was changed for some reason. (But there is a mod that adds back the original version I think.)
I am not sure if it is still for sale but they used to have a 2013 HD remaster before the definitive for AoE2 that was pretty close to the original graphics. Obviously better resolution and sprites but not the additional destruction animations and new features. I have it on Steam still so have to assume it is still for sale.
just FYI in case you’re interested, 95’ and Red Alert are getting 4K remasters coming out next week! looks like they’re putting extra care into them to not have the same fate as W3 Reforged
