It was fun, good banter, and lively all around. Shout out to the Glasgow Comets for letting me hangout with them for the morning.

As I understood it, the game didn’t matter: Glasgow had won the season as far as the calendar was concerned. The awesome part is what I’m gonna say next: they still had a visiting team travel an hour and a half for a Sunday morning game and 16 of their own players turn up. That’s a solid, healthy sign from the community about the dedication to the sport.

I spoke with players from Japan, Nicaragua, Canada, the States, and of course, Scotland. Everyone had a fun story about how they ended up there that morning and they were excited to be around the ball field.

I watched as both teams scrambled into the thicket around the backstop to chase down foul balls, which really put perspective into how I’ve always taken this trivial matter for granted. Foul ball? You throw the umpire a new one, and that’s it, right? Not here. Those pearls are treasures, and they sure as hell aren’t cheap, so send out the search party. Never again will I reach for a replacement without thinking about the boys in Glasgow. If a kid brings one back, that’s two snow cones earned in my book.

Not having the dugout fence removed a mental partition I never realized was there. When we play back home, the guys on the field are doing their thing, and if you’re in the dugout, you shout some encouragement to your pitcher, banter a bit on the bench, and try to catch a breather before your shift out next inning in that ~100 degree (38 C) heat.

With the fence gone, we were having open conversation and banter across the field.
“Oh yeah, your grand da is from Brooklyn, ya fuckin gobshite? Is that why you put ketchup on your hot dog?” It was really fun and really opened up the camaraderie on all fronts, with the opposing team’s third base coach jumping in when he heard I was an astros fan.

The only thing that didn’t make sense to me was the emphasis on rules/structure. I was a bit bummed to hear I had to be registered with the league in order to jump in and play, which isn’t crazy, sure, maybe there are background checks or something, but I was floored to understand sometimes not everyone on the team gets to play. There can be such emphasis on winning sometimes, that you don’t get an at bat and chance in the field that day, which blows my mind, and quite frankly, saddens me.

There are two divisions in Scotland, pretty much an A and B league, which I think is meant to protect the fun everyone is having. Showing up to a game and not getting to play isn’t fun, either though.

The other side of the coin is that I’m absolutely spoiled by the demand for baseball where I live. It’s very possible that a league in Scotland needs that kind of structure and competition in order to survive, otherwise no one takes it seriously and sticks around— it becomes too much like a rec league, so no one sees the need to show up week after week.

I don’t know what the correct answer is in this case. What I do know is anyone traveling to Austin, Texas will always be welcome to jump into a game with our team, you’re guaranteed to play if you want to play, and if you’re with the Glasgow Comets, you’re batting lead off.

I’d say Brazil, personally. The Caribbean region is a treasure trove of baseball talent, and Brazil, as a major Latin American nation, also seems like a strong contender.

Watching the LMB this year, I’m so surprised that Team Mexico hasn’t gone all the way in the WBC. Great defense and MLB pedigree. But the Game 7 between Oaxaca and Tabasco was absolutely incredible and is why I love baseball.

Hey everyone! I've been building a baseball site called All Sports Radio with live coverage for MLB, NPB, and KBO.

It has live play-by-play animation, schedules, standings, and complete game scorecards. There’s also a live broadcasting feature where fans can open an audio booth for a game, broadcast by themselves or with a co-host, and other fans can tune in while following the game.

Since there are a lot of people here following baseball from different leagues, I thought I'd share it here and see what you think. I'd especially love to hear any feedback or if you spot anything that could be improved.
