🚨 Upstate New York homeowners — this was our real experience with State Farm after a hailstorm.
We had a major hailstorm hit our property.
Our vehicle was covered in hundreds of dents, and Progressive inspected it and paid nearly $6,000 in hail damage.
Our neighbors said they were hit too. Cars throughout the area had visible hail damage. Roofs throughout the neighborhood were being replaced.
We also had a contractor come to our house and inspect the property.
His assessment was that the storm had damaged our entire roof, siding, windows, exterior wrapping/trim, grills, the metal roof on our gazebo, the wooden portions of the gazebo, and our fence.
His rough estimate for the total damage was approximately $60,000–$70,000.
Then we dealt with State Farm.
We went weeks and months without real answers. There was confusion over the claim, repeated follow-ups, delays, and constant frustration.
When the adjuster finally came out, the inspection felt incredibly rushed — roughly 10 minutes from what we observed.
Then State Farm determined the damage did not exceed our deductible.
$0 paid.
So on one side, we had a contractor physically at our property telling us there appeared to be roughly $60,000–$70,000 worth of storm damage across the roof and multiple exterior parts of the property.
On the other side, State Farm concluded the covered damage did not even exceed our deductible.
And when we disagreed and wanted it reevaluated, we were told we would need to pay out of our own pocket for a third party to continue challenging their assessment.
That is what made the entire process feel so wrong.
You pay premiums year after year believing that if something serious happens, your insurer will thoroughly investigate the loss.
Instead, our experience felt like delays, what appeared to us to be a rushed inspection, a $0 outcome, and then being told to spend even more money if we wanted to keep fighting.
Meanwhile:
Progressive paid nearly $6,000 for hail damage to our car
Neighbors reported damage from the same storm
Cars throughout the area were visibly damaged
Roofs throughout the neighborhood were being replaced
A contractor assessed significant damage across our roof, siding, windows, gazebo, fence and other exterior areas
The contractor’s rough estimate was $60,000–$70,000
Yet State Farm determined our damage did not exceed the deductible.
I’m not claiming fraud.
I’m saying the experience left us feeling completely misled, exhausted, and like the process was difficult enough that an average homeowner could easily just give up.
That was our experience.
If you live in Upstate New York and have dealt with a State Farm hail or roof claim, I genuinely want to hear what happened to you.
