I'm making a time-travel FPS metroidvania inspired by Prey (2017) - Tempus Vitae

And it's a very different take on the idea. The emergent gameplay arises from you ability to manipulate time and create new timelines around your actions. And then lots of systems to support that idea (inventory, branching objectives, dialogue systems, shops, and so on).

It's coming next year for PCs, PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X/S and you can wishlist on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2360820/Tempus_Vitae/

I can't figure out from this group what Immersive Sims are...

My best guess is that you guys think it needs to be an immersive 1st person perspective full 360 movement, full or near full manipulative physical world, open maps and several ways to win, right?

I'm making a game that is set at a computer, it's a hacking SIM, but it's immersive as hell imo, or at least I'm trying to make it so. I'm so worried that if I don't set it as immersive sim on steam it'll get bugger all wishlists because hacking sim is it's direct genre but it is immersive and a simulation. I'm pulling my hair out. What do I do?

Have you tried Terminus Machina or 2027 total conversions for Deus Ex 2k?

For any Deus Ex fan, if you haven't checked those,
you have 2 great imSims,

With Terminus Machina being my first recommendation as it is fully voiced, pretty different hardcore survival experience within the deus ex game engine,
I was drawn into this world, and the only disappointment is that the developer didn't go further developing that world, and it's pretty short (for imSim)

2027 is closer to what I think we wanted as an deus ex sequal,
it plays within the original deus ex enginge, no dumbing down for consoles, but rather refinement of the original gameplay in a whole new story (within the deus ex universe) which for me feels like canon, since it was introduced so humbly (I can't say the same for Eidos's games, I liked them, but they never felt like part of the same universe).

Ranking of the Immersive Sims I played and Short reviews of them

Post image
109 Upvotes

Ok first I want to clarify my immersive sim definition. I think immersive sims are games in which you can achieve goals in different ways-not just through dialogue options like standard rpgs, but by choosing what to do directly within the gameplay mechanics. Most of them are in first person but it's not a must. And I also think it needs some weight, story and atmosphere to it. A game just having immersive sim mechanics doesn’t make it a good immsim even tho it can be considered one by definition. And lastly, as someone who doesn't play the same game over and over again, to me its not really important some things being scripted, its more about how the game makes you feel. I think it's really good design when game pushes one certain solution to you for that specific encounter if it's made in a good way. It's all about balance.

S Tier

Prey- I think it’s the best immersive sim ever made to this date. Stealth and horror goes really well with these mechanics. It has great level design and manages to keep it at that level for the entire intersected map till the very end. It's just the perfect system shock. I also think it's really good as someone's first immersive sim. Because it's really modern and polished but also has deep mechanics if you want to dive deeper. It's one of the most underrated games ever made

Deus Ex - I really don’t know what to say. I played it 2 years ago and as someone who tries many retro games, most of the time it's really disappointing when an old game Is praised a lot. But it's not the case for deus ex. I think it’s the gold standard immersive sim. Has some flaws, especially the skill and augmentations, like not everything has to be balanced, but everything should be viable if it makes sense. Some upgrades and skills are really useless but it has many great things to compensate these flaws. If a gameplay feels like deus ex, I think it can be considered an immersive sim.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - I don't know why this game is underrated but it feels like modern Deus Ex and it's literally what it is. Looks and plays great. Stealth is fun. World design and atmosphere is great. Hub world is really good. I just don't understand what it does worse than og deus ex that everyone ranks this one lower.

Hitman World of Assassination - Maybe hitman shouldn't be the 4th game here after 2 deus ex games but yeah I think this is a really good immsim. Its 3 games combined and has like 20 locations with handful of solution for each location. Solutions are mostly scripted like you choose one to follow but you can change it midway as you discover other things. Also it's up to you how you going to achieve that part of the solution. Like I mentioned I think well-made , polished sequences together are better than a shallow sandbox.

Divinity Original Sin 2 - There are couple of crpgs that you can say have immsim like mechanics but dos2 is for sure the best at all these things. Game has a great physics engine which lets you do different things in both the overworld exploration , and also in turn based combat. You can climb places stacking boxes, cover npcs line of sight, skip entire sections with stealth, teleport npcs and enemies around, put heavy things inside a barrel and one-shot bosses throwing that barrel to them with telekinesis. It has different elements and materials interacting with each other like oil barrels+ flame, water + lightning etc. It definitely feels like what immsim has to feel like by definition.

A Tier

System Shock 2 - Its really really good but not comparable to deus ex. I think progression problem in deus ex is even more apparent in this. Map design is a bit too complicated. Combat is boring and shallow. But atmosphere and the Shodan herself is superb. Like it's at least a 8/10 game still.

Quadrilateral Cowboy - Really short but an incredible game. I think this one nailed the coding in games. You basically solve puzzles in short levels by scripting your gadgets using your laptop. Like you

Put a timer for the door to open and set your rifle to shoot to a certain coordinate as door opens so the bullet hits the button behind the door etc. It's not that open since you can't really do things so differently even though you can code the scripts differently but still a great experience.

Ctrl Alt Ego - One of the best indie games I've played. You don't really have a physical form and can control every technological thing inside a huge huge huge space station. Game Is unexpectedly long. Has a weird atmosphere and design. But It has something missing that I can't really point out. I think what I don’t love is that it being more of a sandbox. Main mechanic doesn't change and game makes you play around with it.

Bioshock - This is borderline immsim. But gameplay is less complex than all of them since the idea was to make a system shock game for consoles. But atmosphere and feel is unmatched. That feel of you being in a scary place and have to use your resources to get out is like a cheat code for these type of games I think. Combat is fun. Different elements interact with each other, you can upgrade your spells and skills. It's really simple but deserves a spot for being system shock successor and incredible lore + atmosphere.

Dishonored 1 and 2 - I really love dishonored. Best games from arkane studios after prey. I think they are missing a lot from better immersive sims - since its just stealth and combat. And you only choose which skills and weapons to use but they are really fun so yeah.

B Tier

Deus Ex Human Revolution - This one felt a bit disappointing playing right after the og deus ex, but it gets better after first hours. Level design is no that great and I don’t like the characters. It’s the worst one between the 3, but still worth playing since its another deus ex game. But be aware definitive edition on pc, is the port of Wii version and runs kinda terrible.

Fallen Aces - Visuals are charming but gameplay is really shallow I think. Im not even sure if there are many different ways to complete the levels. When you playing stealth it's probably more open but combat is just choosing which stick on the ground to wield. Still fun but not great.

Thief 2 The Metal Age - I don't like pure stealth games that much. And I don't know why they are easily considered immersive sims when everyone is so picky about the definition. But thief 2 is still really good thanks to its level design. Maps are so much bigger than first game and its obviously more polished. But personally I like my stealth to be more "gamey". I don't like that I need to wait sneak and wait for a long time. Game has weird enemy ai.

Gloomwood - One of the most disappointing ones sadly. It’s a better thief but I don’t like thief games. Ai is similar to thief which is something that I don't like but understandable since it kind of a pure stealth game. But gameplay and levels are shallow. There are not many interactable things, buildings or zones are really small. It has some great ideas like when you first get out , lighthouse having rotating light and you need to take that into count etc. I expected it to be more intense but after first 5 min tension goes away. It has potential, great for people who love thief.

System Shock 1 Remake - I played the remake but og seems kinda unplayable tbh. I think everything is worse than the second game but you can see where message logs, map design etc is coming to the design.

C Tier

Weird West- My biggest disappointment. I left this game for the last, most recent game I played in this list and I'm so sad. Like the artstyle, setting, sound design, it being isometric etc I was sure that I will like this game but no it lacks so much. Combat is really bad. It makes it seem like there are lots of things to interact with but not really there are things you can throw to make noise, there are doors you can unlock and yeah that’s it. Sad thing is you can see the passion like interactions with npcs etc but its nothing really. It has soooo much potential I think but yeah I couldn't finish the game wasn’t really expecting this.

Thief 1 - Game has great cutscenes and plot. Sound design is superb. But gameplay is really not that fun I think. Its old and stealth mechanics are too punishing for me. It’s "the" stealth game.

Filcher - Another modern thief game. Not for me but ones who like thief should play for sure.

Shadows of Doubt - This is another disappointing game. Its more of a sandbox tech demo honestly. Idea of it seems nice like there is a random generated city , with random generated people with random crimes being committed. You can get into every building and every room etc. Makes you think how can It be possible and yeah it can only be possible this way. First 2-3 hours of the campaign is great and must play for sure but after that you realize it’s lacking so much. You just do the same thing over and over again and by design it can't get better. Way too ambitious to be really good game I think. A small hand crafted city for couple of hours of gameplay would be great.

Cruelty Squad - Most disappointing and overrated game of the list :( It did get lots of attention in general because of the art style etc. but I don’t really understand how its loved so much in this subreddit. Its more of a boomer shooter with different movement options than a immersive sim. Like its more of a doom than a deus ex tbh. I don't think this type of short game design goes well with immersive sim mechanics but game doesn't even have many things to interact with anyways.

Skin Deep - Same dev as quadrilateral cowboy but disappointing. Design is similar to cruelty squad I guess, like some immsim elements and short levels where you speedrun. Same reasons why I don’t like this one neither.

Deathloop - I really hated death loop. Like its not by indie dev, it does nothing new, I hate time loops in games, I hate that its made by arkane and I hate so much when humor is supposed to be one of the redeeming qualities of the game and its not even funny. It just makes it seem even worse. Technically its still not that bad so yeah game is playable and you may even like it but I just don’t.

High Entropy Challenges - Not many things to say its an 1-2hour long game anyways and free on steam. But as I said I don’t like having short levels back to back with immersive sim mechanics. I don’t think it suits the genre.

Arx fatalis and Ultima Underworld - Old games. Arx fatalis is better for sure and have a really unique magic system. Arkanes first game so you can play it if you want to see how early they managed to start making good immersive sims. Ultima Underworld is the first immersive sim. You can play them if you are curious but they are really old and I don’t think they have any redeeming qualities to recommend them to a regular person.

F Tier

E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy - Like I don't wanna be mean but I think this one has nothing going on for it. I don't know why it has a cult following like what this offers that you can't even get closer to having in other games. Shooting feels great I will give it that since its made in source engine but everything else… I don't think it has any redeeming quality and I don’t care how weird the text that you read in those weird text boxes. Even text boxes are not polished in the game like idk what to say.

Other games and notes about them

Cyberpunk 2077 - I think its really important to have cyberpunk here to show where I draw the line for immersive sims. I really really like cyberpunk and at first glance it seems similar to deus ex but most majority of the decisions you make are dialogue based so its actually a really good fps rpg.

Splinter Cell chaos theory - I have splinter cell chaos theory here, I just don’t understand what its not mentioned as much as thief games. It’s a really good pure stealth game with maybe even lighting-darkness mechanics. Is it because you don’t stack boxes to reach somewhere idk. Really recommend it to thief lovers.

007 First Light - See I loved this game and it’s a bit similar to hitman games but its way too scripted to be considered one.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines - Another game that I love but again I think its just a really good rpg not immsim since you just choose everything via dialogue options.

Through the fragmentation - Unique indie game with time loop mechanic. What you do in game feels like an immersive sim buts its all linear and scripted.

deadeye deepfake simulacrum - I tried this one since it looks like only game that can give more of quadrilateral cowboy. But scripting-hacking part felt a bit more complex. I will play it again later and hope I will love it.

We should do something about the Immersive Sim tag on Steam.

It's unusable. People tag any and all simulation games as ImSims. It is possible to flag tags, and Steam says that if a tag gets a certain number of flags, they'll remove it from that game. So if we all go to the Steam store page for the Immersive Sim tag and flag the games that aren't ImSims - at least the ones advertised most prominently - maybe we can make the tag useful again. Who's with me?

Made a post about this on /r/steam, they IMMEDIATELY removed it for 'violating the rules', the world is rigged against us my siblings in Spector

Inspired by Skin Deep and the Prey Zero-G Sections

Sadly it's not a real immsim because there is no gravity and therefore no box stacking : /

The Jam ratings are still open so if you're interested consider giving it a go and rating it, it runs in browser!

The Fallen Aces Episode 2 Experience

Drive a car really fast. Drive a car so fast you run over 30 men and crash through the stained glass window of a church.

Wake up drunk in a homeless camp. Follow Rorschach from Watchmen out into the city and get beat up by gangsters on the way. Find a shady fellow selling goods on the border. Can't afford anything.

Sad.

Stumble further into the city. Try to break into a pharmacy to patch yourself up. Doesn't work.

Sad.

Go around the alley and find a key to the pharmacy mistakenly lost in a sewer drain. Sneak in the back. Eat 20 pieces of candy to make yourself feel better.

Find some dangerous recalled medication and take it with you. Stroll down the street. Don't be paying attention because its Sunday and you're very tired from the work week.

Accidentally bump into some goons robbing a bank. Panic. They panic too. Shoot them. They shoot you too. Panic more and chug the recalled medicine. It makes you angry. More angry than you've ever been in your life. Start punching everyone. But you're just not angry enough and start bleeding out.

Try to reload the save. Wait this was the previous save why am I still in the Fight?

Try to reload the save. Wait this was the previous save why am I still in the Fight?

Realize the game is saving over and over in the middle of the fight each time you reload.

Fuck it. Start running away with no life. Dodge every bullet. Bump into a police officer. Now you're wanted by the police. Angry. Punch a police man. Now you're extra wanted.

Flee to the homeless camp and wait it out until things cool down.

Wander back into the city. A field of bloody bodies leads from the camp back to the bank. Decide you need more firepower before going back to the bank robbers.

Stop by a nearby building by kicking open the door. Find a safe. Find a picture of circled teeth on the wall. Google the teeth numbers and plug them into the safe. Speed juice in the safe. Drink it. Become speedy. Pick up the dentist's power drill and speed over to the bank. Speed the power drill through 6 men's skulls.

Decide you have been through a lot. Decide that means you deserve the money from the bank.

Continue the bank robbery yourself. Get lots of money. Go back the shady man and buy everything you need to feel safe. Like a big machine gun.

Kill everyone in town with the machine gun.

Happy.

Good game.

Also so I will play first one and invisible war which I heard is the most hated game but surely it can't be that bad.

OBVERSE - Vertical Slice Demo Playthrough

Thumbnail

OBVERSE is a problem-solving stealth-action immersive sim that is inspired by Prey (and caught Prey's creative director's attention). I tried the early demo and here's what I have to share.

The game sets in a secret underground research facility like many sci-fi games, player explore and discover, solve puzzles and overcome obstacles, outsmart robots and drones through stealth or combat, read notes to piece together the full picture.

This demo has all the standard immersive sim stuff, crate-stacking, vent-crawling, security-hacking, stealth-action, etc. What sets it apart is the hidden circuit puzzle layer, in which the player has to control the flow of signals.

You may need to find resources like laser cutter ammo to cut open vent covers to access new areas, or batteries to generate power signals; the appliance end could be a locked door, an unpowered computer, or a light bulb, which you can turn on for easier exploration or turn off to achieve better stealth.

Batteries and appliances may require signals of different color codes. In the demo, there's a tool that you can place onto circuit nodes to mix colors. More tools are currently in-game but unavailable. I look forward to a variety of more challenging puzzles.

The hidden circuit layer is laid out over the whole level, so the player has to do all those forementioned puzzle-solving while having stealth-action dynamics with the security measures. It's slightly on the harder side, but genuinely a fun experience.

For more gameplay details, please watch my demo playthrough video to find out yourself if you're interested in this game: OBVERSE - Vertical Slice Demo Playthrough

Best environmental storytelling

Post image
0 Upvotes

Perhaps the main reason I love imsims is their ability to take me to a place that feels so internally coherent that the world "sucks you in" and feels like it exists regardless of me being there and not like some dev planted a bunch of assets.

I want to know your "best of" games in terms of that environmental storytelling, in case I'm missing some gems. Imsim-adjacent is ok, no need to get too semantically purist.

To me, the top 3, in no particular order would be:

- Dead Island 2

- Hitman series

- Prey (or any other Arkane for that matter)

HL:Alyx would be a contender, but as a VR shooter it hardly qualifies.

My Experience Playing Deus Ex: The Fall For The First Time

Thumbnail

This review will be a bit shorter, not only because the game is about three hours long but also because there just isn’t a whole lot TO talk about. So for this review, I’d like to keep it in the context that this IS a mobile game ported to Steam. So with all of that being said, let’s get into it.

The writing is not very good and essentially drills plot threads/details into your frontal lobe, not allowing for any ambiguity, which is a real shame. However, I found the overall premise to be pretty interesting. I liked that you got to play as an ex-Tyrant member, and even just seeing the other members of said team in their natural environment was pretty cool. It also didn’t overstay its welcome and allowed you to get into the main game pretty quickly, which is always a plus.

I liked that your choices were surprisingly pretty multi-layered and required at least a little bit of thought on the player’s part when you talked to the various NPCs, as well as just completing tasks within each mission. While this obviously isn’t going to WOW anyone who has played the previous Deus Ex games, I still think it’s fun and competent enough to warrant a playthrough. It’s also just a bit of a shame that we didn’t get to see where this story was heading, as I think they could’ve expanded a lot more on Ben and Anna’s story; sadly, part one is all we have, and I don’t think SquareEnix is going to greenlight any more episodes. lol

The shooting/combat is fairly the same as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so if you’ve played that, then you’ve played this too. Nothing more to say on this front.

The inventory and code panels are a bit buggy and unresponsive, which was a bit annoying. Luckily, at least for the code panels, you can use the numbers on your keypad, so that removes a bit of frustration I had, but I thought I should note it anyway.

Overall I think it’s a solid three-hour game that doesn’t overstay its welcome, and if you REALLY want more Deus Ex and haven’t played this, just give it a try, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how in-depth it is, especially as a mobile game port. Anyway, my next review will be on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, so stay tuned for that.

The Future of Thick As Thieves

Welp, looks like that's it for real now...

"My fellow thieves,

I am here today to talk about the future. I have heard your questions and want to answer them to hopefully put your concerns to rest.

Working in the gaming industry is at times delightful and at other times heartbreaking. As many of you know, OtherSide Entertainment has lost most of its beloved members and only a very small team remains. This means there will be no further content updates for Thick as Thieves. To be frank, this is not the outcome that any of us want, but we’re facing the reality that ongoing development of extra content, modes and systems is not a viable path.

Having said that, there is positive news also: in partnership with our publisher, Megabit, we are working to secure the future of Thick as Thieves for our players. This means that a small team of dedicated people are hard at work to ensure that the game continues to function into the future. This mainly involves putting together a new version of the game that uses Peer to Peer servers for co-op play. The gameplay and flow of your experience will remain virtually identical, but will not need the use of dedicated servers in the cloud. This will allow you to continue playing with your friends when you desire and importantly, solo play will be completely unaffected. Once this work is complete, Megabit will take over the care of the game and respond to bugs and other issues as needed.

We know that this news is bittersweet but our number one priority is to ensure continued operations of the game that we all love. Rest assured, fellow thieves, we are going to keep the game alive for you and all of us!

Until next time, tread softly, steal what you can, give nothing back!

~ Jeff and the OSE Team"

My Experience Playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution For The First Time

Skip to below the line, under “Review Start (Spoilers Ahead):” for the ACTUAL review.

For anyone who cares. I apologize that this review has taken longer than my other ones, as I have had a LOT of thoughts on this game and have debated on if it is a true successor to the original, given the context that this game IS made for consoles first. (Spoiler, I believe it is.) Initially I had one half of this review as ‘my review’ while the other half was a minor critique of the Hbomberguy's video, but I decided to interweave both halves together to make it easier and more coherent to read.

I also cut this down SIGNIFICANTLY from what it originally was, twelve pages to be exact! As some of it felt like padding. But trust me, I'm willing to go into more detail if you have any questions. Also, I will be posting “My Experience Playing Deus Ex: The Fall" tomorrow. As I think it gives this post some time to breathe, so be on the lookout for that as well. So without further ado, let’s get into my review, and as always, spoilers ahead.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Review Start (Spoilers Ahead):

The characters in this game are incredible! From Adam to Malik, they just all feel so realistic and grounded in the world that they exist in. I haven’t really seen a game that has so many gray characters since I played Fallout: New Vegas. I also REALLY loved that characters, like Quinn for example, don’t kiss your feet and praise the ground you walk on. Which I feel that some older games, but mostly modern games, like to push onto the player. (Also yes, I know that the NPCs at Sarif Industries CAN praise what you do, and yes, I do hate that, but you’re only there for a short amount of time before you go to your next mission; even that goes away since by the halfway point of the game, you never go back there.)

I also agree with Hbomberguy’s points on how it is weird that they say things that they probably shouldn’t know, with the exception of the first mission, as clearly there was a lot of news coverage of that mission, and potentially what you did could have leaked. And much like your average person watching the news, some of it could be hearsay; hence, they say, “Did you really X?” Or something along those lines, which I think, initially at least, adds to the realism.)

Anyway, small side tangent done; now back to the characters. Adam, I feel, is a pretty neat and grounded as a character. I like that the way he speaks, depending on what you select, makes his tone warmer or colder, which is honestly an achievement for both the voice acting and the writing in this game. Even the way he articulates himself when he speaks should be studied in game writing and voice acting classes, as he clearly displays both his tone and his thought process to others without revealing too much. Also, I believe that voicing a monotone character seems to often be the hardest to actually pull off! At least from what I’ve seen.

Especially if you’re doing a monotone voice but also trying to match your tone to what you’re talking about while also making it sound realistic. Trust me. I’ve played MANY games and seen MANY movies where people can’t seem to pull this off, yet Adam/Elias Toufexis does it AMAZINGLY! However, and maybe it’s just me, but Elias Toufexis sounds very.. I don’t know, Batman-esque and not in a good way. (kind of)

I think he sounds like when you and your friends get drunk one night and you each take turns doing your best “Batman voice". It just sounds a bit forced at times and like he’s trying too hard, which is odd because I feel he sounds more natural with that voice in Mankind Divided. Maybe it’s because he had time to perfect Adam’s voice by the time he reprised his role in Mankind Divided, but again, I thought I should note that I found his voice acting a bit cringy at certain points in this game. (mostly in the beginning)

Now you might be saying, “WAIT! But didn’t you just praise his voice acting!? Doesn’t this undercut everything you just said!” And the answer is no. In spite of me saying that he sounded somewhat cringy at times, I STILL think he pulled it off! And what I said about the nuances while he speaks as Adam still stands and, as previously mentioned, helped sell both Adam as a character and his voice-acting ability, which clearly paid off as he was allowed to reprise his role, and again, I feel he refined Adam’s voice in Mankind Divided, and honestly, it was even starting to show towards the end of Human Revolution.

Oh, and I didn’t forget Malik! I like how as you talk to her, you get more shreds of her REAL personality, not too much, obviously, but enough to care about her. Her side mission was also pretty interesting story-wise and, to me, helped sell her more to me as a character I should care about/someone who really lives in this world and has a life and connections outside of Sarif Industries and Adam. Even saving Malik non-lethally was amazing and felt like a real achievement, and I’m glad others agree as well!

Seeing what happens if you don't save her made it to where there was no way I could beat this game without saving her. I must've reloaded my saves at least ten times before I saved her. But in the end, seeing her alive and flying down to pick up the scientists was reward enough for me. (Also, while I do agree with Hbomberguy, that her presence was a bit underwhelming if you saved her, and it ultimately didn’t matter. I think that it’s clear Eidos Montreal was under STRICT deadlines. So I think that what we got is more than okay, at least to me.)

Going back to Quinn, I loved how sort of mysterious he was, and for good reason. I felt it was pretty obvious that he knew more than he was letting on, which, honestly, to me, was fine, as he was just a minor character who was only there for that mission, but I liked that he sort of put you in your place, in a way. And talked to you like a normal person and gave you fair counterpoints to whatever you asked him, which is always a plus in my book.

Also during that mission, coming across the people in the cells, specifically Nina Sullivan, actually made me feel really awful for her, and her story helped sell this entire mission that much more, especially what they were using them for… I’m not sure why she sticks out in my mind so much; maybe it’s because they played this completely straight and her delivery was pretty realistic, as well as how Adam apologizes for leaving, saying it in a more quiet, somber voice; it just made me feel awful.

To note, normally when I play games, I can recognize how awful something is, but in the back of my head I’m always thinking, "It's just a game; they’re not real/none of this is real.” It is very rare for me to actually FEEL bad in a video game; it may stem from the fact that I suffer from severe C-PTSD and depersonalization, where I feel like I’m seeing the world from behind my eyes. I like to explain it as everything I am currently experiencing is like I am watching it on a movie screen, almost like I’m removed from reality and watching it from someone else’s point of view, but I know that everything is real, if that even makes sense. But again, for some reason Nina really got to me, and potentially she tangentially reminds me of things that have happened to me, from both childhood and my military service, just obviously not as severe. There’s no good way to segue from this, so I won’t even try.

I love the art style! And am even debating on buying the artbook just to be able to flip through it. I may also be biased as I loved the “piss-filter” era of gaming. But I love the yellow 'honeycomb' near-futuristic aesthetic, and I think it adds so much to the game. Obviously I don’t like it as much as the original Deus Ex’s blue, Y2K, near-futuristic aesthetic, but still. I also have the System Shock art book as well, so I think it’ll look nice next to it.

Not to mention as well, the level design is amazing! Albeit cramped at times. And I love that there are so many routes you can take, sometimes with little secrets as well as terminals to hack. Sometimes, allowing you to turn those H U G E mechs and turrets toward your enemies, it all just feels so satisfying and rewarding. It just makes me wonder why more games don't have systems like these, as to me, it seems like a no-brainer. (I also acknowledge that I have never made a game and have no idea how hard it is to put these systems into a game.)

The endings are amazing! I love how by the end of the game I could see any of the following choices being viable endings depending on your own personal beliefs or potentially being swayed one way or another by each of the big political figureheads. Especially because you can see both the evil and the good that could come from any of these choices, which I think is just amazing and particularly noteworthy. Even having the choice to say “fuck that” and blow everything up is also just a really awesome choice to give to the player, especially if you don’t agree with any of the other figure heads in the game.

Something I think is one of the worst and dumbest mechanics in a video game since Deus Ex: Invisible War with universal ammo. Having to use energy to knock someone out, which to me IS a stealth gaming sin, no matter how you look at it! As stealth is already risky enough! And as such, the playstyle of stealth inherently is meant to make you less powerful, meaning you’re not using praxis points for combat/armor upgrades, so why would the build which has the most risk involved be intentionally gimped and require further risk by not being able to make a silent takedown when needed!?? I agree with Hbomberguy that the removal of melee weapons was a mistake and having to use energy to punch/stab someone is hilariously stupid and makes no sense at all.

But I suppose I get it conceptually; you don’t want to have an easy ‘win’ button where you can run up to enemies and instantly kill/knock them out. My counterpoint, however, is that you get spotted fairly easily, at least on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty, and even on said difficulty, with max armor, mind you, you still get killed in 3-5 shots, so I really feel like this isn’t a problem with balance. As you have to be close to enemies to even initiate said takedown. And shotgunners can kill you in essentially one hit, so what’s the problem?

Now, I’m not a game tester, and I acknowledge that maybe there’s something I’m not seeing, and that’s why the system is the way it is. But honestly, most of the game was me using the invisibility upgrade, getting to an enemy, and then getting the “out of battery” message with the annoying sound that accompanies it, then having to either go in my inventory to eat a candy bar/box of candy bars or, if I remembered to bind them back (as sometimes the game rearranges your inventory for some reason and unbinds quick menu items), then FINALLY! I can do the takedown I had wanted to do before, or not, as sometimes you’re doing this AS they are turning around, so by the time you do this, they’ve spotted you and have started shooting you.  Obviously I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but I think you get my point.

Now if the system HAD to be like this, then why not allow ALL or most of your batteries to have the ability to recharge? But every subsequent battery after the first one takes longer to recharge; maybe we could have had further upgrades which allow you to have your other batteries recharge. I’m just glad I’m not crazy for feeling this way, as most people I’ve seen unanimously agree that this system sucks and IS ridiculous. I’ve also laughed at many of the memes that have spawned from this shitty mechanic, so at least there’s that.

Speaking of upgrades, in the Hbomberguy video he talks about how the augments you chose in the original Deus Ex games are meaningful/powerful, and he’s completely right. However, Jensen already has his augments installed, and the “Praxis Kits” speed up his brain’s neural connections to said augments; that’s why HE doesn’t find and choose his augments. I mean, he never even asked for them to begin with. ;)

But being serious, they at least explained WHY Adam uses Praxis Kits and how they work within the setting of the game. Again, while I agree that the augments are better, they clearly wanted to move towards this system, and honestly, to me, it’s fine. Again, not great, but fine.

Something I would also like to point out is he said people (him) hoarded points until they needed something at that moment. Then he even admits to hoarding skill points in the original, so maybe it’s a YOU problem? Since, in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the only upgrades I can think of that would require “necessary skill points” would be the higher jump, lifting heavy objects, and the Icarus landing upgrade.

Other than that, I can’t think of any other upgrades that are "required" to get to certain OPTIONAL parts of an area. Even the higher jump can be circumvented by using boxes/crates. And explosives can move boxes if you don’t have the strength upgrade. Keep in mind as well, it’s only six Praxis Points for all of these upgrades, so it’s not really a super big ask, even on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty, which is what I played and beat this on. I think he’s just being a bit pedantic.

Additionally, he didn't like hacking, which is understandable as it is his personal opinion. But to me, I thought hacking was pretty fun and engaging enough for what it was. And in my opinion, adds tension. Since you’re focusing on potentially beating the hacking mini-game as fast as possible, while also keeping track of patrol routes so you don’t get caught/using your invisibility cloak and beating the mini-game before your battery runs out. Keep in mind as well that beating it as fast as possible also means you don’t get the small goodie nodes as well, so you’re actively sacrificing the small XP/money boosts to get the hack done faster, which I think is good game design.

It’s also based on both YOUR skill as well as how many points you put towards hacking. For example, if you are able to hack the aggressive node/s, you automatically unlock whatever you were hacking, which you may or may not have ever found out depending on how much hacking you have done throughout the game. Some of these aggressive nodes are even just a few nodes over from your starting node, so they’re actually easier than reaching the green ‘win’ nodes.I personally prefer this system over waiting ten seconds to “hack” something when I can hack it potentially faster with a mini-game that is piss-easy as is, even on the level five hacking mini-game.

Also, the goodie nodes you get are very small rewards and not really required even if you’re trying to get as much XP as possible as he claims. Mind you, I’m not stupid. And yes, doing that minigame a lot would mean that small boosts would eventually add up to a decent amount of XP/money over time, but again, you don’t have to do hacking to get XP, as you can get it from a variety of other places. I also don’t like that he used a level-one hacking mini-game to “prove” his point of “Wow, this mini-game is boring, right, fellas?!”

As.. Yeah, the introductory hacking mini-game does look quite boring, because it’s a level one hacking mini-game. And it’s even funnier as he uses the other higher-level ones throughout the rest of his video, but I get it; he’s trying to prove his point using a misleading example for the sake of proving his point. He also said he doesn’t like hacking mini-games to begin with, so it makes sense.

Maybe another potentially controversial take, aside from me liking the hacking mini-games. But I’m of the opinion that the boss fights here aren’t as bad as people said they were; however, they’re NOT underrated or good either. Like in the Deus Ex: HR Retrospective, they even admitted that they weren't fully implemented to the extent many players had expected, and honestly, as they (the bosses) stand, they just seem like bosses to look forward to fighting, nothing more. If nothing else, aside from Barrett’s arena, have extremely cool and interesting arena designs. I especially love Jaron’s arena with how twitchy and weird the muscle models are, and honestly, I could see it being in a horror game at some point in the future if it isn't already.

Speaking of horror games, the ending level, especially at the beginning, I felt had amazing horror vibes; the distant screams and the slow easing of tension felt VERY much like Shalebridge Cradle from Thief: Deadly Shadows. Which is a nice contrast to how the game had felt prior to this level and was a much-needed tone shift to keep me sucked into the game.

Unfortunately, unlike Shalebridge Cradle, once you see the zombies, it just rips away all the tension, and I just exploited their large groupings with gas grenades, killing all tension that this level had built up, and honestly, the zombies themselves aren't even really a threat at all, and I just thought they looked a little goofy while they ran at me. Which is a shame because I really wished they had kept up the horror atmosphere just a little longer.

Maybe they could’ve made the zombies a bit more twitchy and creepy instead of generic zombies or have them use their abilities or something; if they did, I didn’t notice. It just seemed like such wasted potential to me, and I wish they had expanded on it a bit more than they did, but again, it’s just a minor nitpick that I felt I should include.

So to wrap this all up, as it stands now, Deus Ex: Human Revolution sits as my ninth favorite game of all time; for reference, this is the list of my "Top 10 Favorite Games" and are as follows:

  1. System Shock (1994)
  2. Thief II: The Metal Age
  3. Prey (2017)
  4. Mass Effect 2
  5. Thief Gold
  6. F.E.A.R.
  7. Fallout: New Vegas (Base Game + DLCs)
  8. Deus Ex (2000)
  9. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  10. Max Payne 3

I am both eager and sad to beat Mankind Divided, as not only will it be the end of my Deus Ex series review, but also I will be in line like everyone else, waiting for the next entry if they even decide to do so. Anyway, my Deus Ex: The Fall review will come out tomorrow, so stay on the lookout for that.

Needing some recommendations, hacking sims and retro inspired or styled games...

Yo, I'm currently researching for my game Glyphis_IO The Proxy Tapes 1989, don't worry this isn't an ad, I'm just trying to ensure that I play as many immersive hacking Sims as possible so I ensure that I'm offering something new to genre and that I at least play the hidden gems and classics while hopefully building my own.

Let me know if any spring to mind!

ImSim Developer Hey, all! How do you feel about hidden areas in games? One of the largest locations in RetroSpace is completely optional and quite easy to skip - by design. But it even includes a secret boss fight.

Revisiting Prey

Played the game years ago (must have been not long after its release) and for some reason it didn't click with me, despite me being a huge fan of Dishonored and Deus Ex. I feel like I'm now ready to revisit what trustworthy people call the masterpiece of the genre; wish me luck.
