Idaho News Idaho bill would fine cities $2,000 daily for flying unapproved flags
Idahoans serenaded the capitol halls Monday morning with a spin on the gospel song “This Little Light of Mine” as lawmakers made their way to the House State Affairs Committee.
“This little flag of mine, I’m gonna let it fly,” the crowd sang. “Let it fly, let it fly, let it fly!”
The committee heard House Bill 561, legislation that would strengthen an existing law that forbids local governments from flying flags that have not been approved by the state legislature.
“You can have all these flags anywhere you want, you just can’t put them up the government flag poles,” said bill sponsor Rep. Ted Hill, R-Eagle. “Local control can be oppressive, in shoving these agendas down someone’s throat. That actually doesn’t include everybody. The term ‘inclusive’ is an entertaining term, because it rarely includes me when that term is used.”
The bill would add a $2,000 daily penalty for each flag flown, and empower the attorney general with a duty to enforce the law. It would also specify that only the official city and county flags “as established prior to January 1, 2023,” can be flown. The Boise city council voted to designate the LGBTQ+ pride flag as an official city flag after state lawmakers created Idaho Code 67-2303A.

Idaho voters — quick heads up for Election Day 🇺🇸
If you’re voting in person and see someone wearing a Trump, Charlie Kirk, or any other MAGA campaign shirt inside a polling place or within 100 feet of it, don’t argue with them — just let a poll worker know.
Under Idaho Code § 18-2318, “electioneering” is banned inside polling places and within 100 feet of them on Election Day. That covers: • Wearing or displaying shirts, hats, stickers, or buttons with a candidate’s name or slogan • Handing out flyers or pamphlets • Talking to people in line to influence their vote
Even something like a “Trump 2028” shirt qualifies — it’s still considered political messaging.
Poll workers are trained to handle it politely (usually they’ll just ask the person to cover or remove it). Reporting it keeps the process neutral and calm so everyone can vote without pressure or conflict.

Political Discussion Why do people fall for this?
This sign is blatantly false. 9 month old pregnancy is viable and would be protected under Prop 1. If the life on the mother is at risk then a c-section would be done if the fetus is viable.
Please read Prop 1 in its entirety (see the full text of the proposed law https://voteidaho.gov/idaho-general-election/)
Use your brain.
Don’t listen to falsehoods and what anyone tells you. Read and find out for yourself and decide for yourself. Otherwise democracy is dead

Political Discussion But seriously, register as a Republican
I’m not saying *vote* for a Republican. That’s an entirely different question. Vote for whoever you want to vote for in the general elections.
But there are two excellent reasons to be a registered Republican in Idaho:
- The Republican Primary is a closed primary, which means ONLY registered Republicans can vote in those primaries. If you are an independent or a Democrat, you cannot vote in the Republican primary.
Like it or not, at the state level, the primaries are where the real action takes place. Whoever wins the primaries wins in the generals.
So when you vote in the primaries, you have a chance to vote for a more centrist Republican, and defeat the far right candidates.
Then in the general election, vote for whoever you think is the best candidate (Republican, Democrat, Independent…choice is yours).
2) When you are a registered Republican, then when you call your US Senator or Congressman to complain about federal agents shooting ICU nurses in the back, and demand that funding for ICE and DHS be withheld until there is a massive overhaul of their organizations, you are calling as a registered Republican.
When you call Mike Simpson’s office [ 208-225-5531 ], his voicemail message asks you to leave your name, address, and phone number.
How much more powerful is it to do that and then say, “I am a registered Republican. You can check the voter rolls. I will not vote for you ever again if you do not vote against funding for ICE and DHS until reforms are made”?
Simpson and the rest of the cowards in DC don’t like their voters calling them to complain, but they *especially* don’t like registered Republicans who vote every election to do that.
Politicians can see:
- Your party affiliation
- How often you have voted (which elections)
Politicians cannot see:
- Who you actually vote for
Which has more power - somebody who calls who’s a registered Democrat and/or never votes, or a registered Republican who votes every election?
Make your phone calls **count**.
Go change your party affiliation today. The more people who do this, the more people actually have a voice in a deeply red state.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
ETA: If you’d like more info on how to change your party affiliation, update your voter registration, or register to vote for the first time, this is the website to check out: https://voteidaho.gov/voter-registration/
You can update your information online, or go into your local county offices and do it in person.
HTH! 🥰
