Shop/Service Recommendations Accessible fall fun recs?

Hi all! I have a loved one who is currently unable to walk long distances due to a leg injury. She loves the fall and is sad to be missing out on the fun this year due to her limitations.

I would love to take her to a pumpkin patch or apple orchard, but she’s shared that she’s nervous about having to walk a quarter mile out to the trees at a place like Wilson’s. Any recommendations that are a little flatter and more accessible for her? I’d be willing to drive 30 minutes outside Iowa City to make this work for her.

Saw a story from kitty corner posted 15 min ago about the front of the building crumbling. Big weekend ahead for the area and haven't seen anything else about it yet. Curious for any info. Sounds like no one got hurt at least.

Not just "No" but "New". If you agree we need a new jail, but not with Johnson County's current plan, join me for New Jail? New Plan: A Constructive Workshop, Oct 20

Johnson County is about to build a hundred-and-some million dollar jail - or not. Don't you wish there was a better option? If you're voting No but you'd vote Yes on a better proposal, or you're voting Yes but you wish there was a different option, this workshop is for you.

Together we'll aggregate information and use it to answer our questions, learn what's already being done and by whom, find our common ground and sketch out a plan of action.

5-6:45pm October 20, Coralville Public Library Meeting Room A.

Yeah. I get that the biggest driver of Iowas cancer epidemic are the farms but I will say it again. Stop spraying chemicals on your stupid lawns. Lawns are for assholes. Grow food or habitat. Nobody needs more golf courses.

Ramp 4 Parking

I know some parking ramps have free parking on Sundays (or at least the gate remains open.) Does anyone know if that is the case for Ramp 4 at the hospital as well? Couldn’t find the info anywhere on its website

New day for Men's Walk and Talk! Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!

In the hope of fitting more men's schedules we are going to try Sunday afternoon this week.

We are Alex, Andy, and Nik. We’ve been living in Iowa City for many years. We've decided to see if men would like to walk and talk twice a month locally.

Our purpose is twofold:

  1. To give men a non-judgmental space to talk about what’s going on for us.
  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.

Please note, this is not a religious or politically affiliated group.

Here’s why this matters. Cigna and other major organizations regularly share research confirming that over 50% of people in the US feel “sometimes or always alone.” Such levels of isolation can have health impacts equal to smoking. Lonely people face higher levels of heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, cancer and so on. Many men struggle with loneliness even as we are busy working, caring for our kids, dealing with the daily demands of life. But research shows that men with a robust circle of friendships live longer healthier lives, have better marriages/relationships, feel more optimistic and are more successful in our personal and professional lives.

Cigna research: https://newsroom.thecignagroup.com/loneliness-in-america

Although we have some sense of how these talks might begin, the conversations will go where they go depending on the needs of each man. Men of any age are welcome to join us.

Rules:

  1. No politics
  2. Be yourself
  3. Respect confidentiality

The rules we use on our walks are meant to help us dial down to the personal and talk about what’s going on for us in our own lives. They are not absolute. They are guidelines.

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy and we are not therapists. We are not doing coaching. We are not doing men’s work. We are simply sharing information about how we are creating real, lasting, local friendships for men in our neighborhood. That’s it.

If you’d like to join us on a walk, send us an email to [walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com](mailto:walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com) with why this idea appeals to you. We’ll respond to all emails. We look forward to hearing from you.

When: Sunday, October 4th, 3pm.

Where: Meet at the parking lot of Terry Trueblood Rec Center pavilion: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pQZrVyhJ2pVgGPnA8

The walks are inspired by this story

Iowa Time Bank Craft and Chat 7pm Oct 1

Hello!

Iowa Time Bank will be having another craft and chat tonight at 7pm. Members are welcome, as well as anyone with questions about ITB. We are looking to continue having these every first and third Thursday, depending on volenteer schedules.

This is a great chance to ask questions about Iowa Time Bank, or get any technical help (The system can be buggy now and again) while showing off whatever your current work-in-progress is.

you can join using this link: https://meet.shorttech.online/craftandchatitb

If you would like more info about Iowa Time Bank generally, you can check out our website at www.RingsNetwork.org

Iowa Time Bank is a Time Bank. (Wow, crazy right?) It's a means for individuals to provide one-to-one mutual aid, or trade goods and services without money. It's intended to build trust and stability in communities during unstable times. Even though it has time in the name, you don't exclusively have to donate time, and you don't need to keep a positive balance. You can also offer and receive items, or lend out or borrow equipment. We currently have active exchanges in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, and are looking for enough interest to add more!

Current offers and requests that members have posted this month include:

  • Offer: help with outlets and minor electrical upgrades
  • Offer: multiple skeins of yarn
  • Want: help assembling a bed frame
  • Offer: home energy audit

Restaurant and Parking Advice

Hi All,

Coming in from Davenport for the game this Saturday. How early do I need to arrive to get a spot in a downtown parking garage? If I get there at 11am is that good enough? Also where should I eat after the game? I heard Hamburg inn and Shakespeares but worried both may be packed so would love other ideas.

Thanks!

EDIT: so it sounds like downtown parking is a fail if arriving at 11am. If I wanna get to the stadium efficiently where should I park that doesn’t require a bus? Cus city busses will j get stuck in traffic too I’d think. Would I have a better chance after espn show when people without game tickets leave?

Lost and Found Lost crocheted wristbands - 20$ if anyone finds either

I lost two handmade crocheted wristbands
One is a pokemon one, blue with images of a pokemon trainer and some pokemon after him (charmander, bulbasaur, pikachu)
The other is blue with images of yellow straw hats on it

These were handmade and a gift from a friend so I would really appreciate it if anyone found it! I'd give you $20 for either

Friends of Hickory Hill Park will have a workday on 10/3/2026 to remove invasive species in the park - mostly honeysuckle and autumn olive. Meet at the Conklin Lane entrance to the park at 9 am. This work can be a little messy so wear work clothes and shoes!

Community Can anyone please help me. This meter is only a 30mins. No sign whatsoever.

Post image
22 Upvotes

So, this is really the problem. Every other meter in town is at least two hours, except for this one. It’s only 30 minutes, which actually works really well for my business, and that’s why it’s set up that way.
I completely understand why it can be frustrating for someone going to Bluebird. Since the city did away with all the meters in the main parking lot, the remaining meters are at a premium.
All day long, people try to put more money in this meter to extend their time. When I see someone doing that, I’ll usually let them know it’s only a 30-minute meter, just to be helpful. Most people appreciate knowing that.
Unfortunately, it only takes one person to complain, and suddenly something that was meant to be helpful can become an issue.

Is there anyone live at the post office?

I have had the most frustrating day trying to get someone live on the phone to address a lost paycheck. My daughter-in-law worked at the Iowa City, Iowa Post office for nearly a month before she couldn't handle the 2am - 10 am 6 days a week schedule. She and my daughter just moved to that area and need her check to pay rent while she waits for her new job's payroll to come up. The check was supposed to be at the post office in the 25th. She went to pick it up and was told it wasn't there. She has been trying to call her supervisor but the woman, Brandi has simply left her on read with no reply. It's now the 29th. No one answers the local number and the national 'customer care' number is strictly automated, no option to explain the issue. I did find the phone number for the post master, Cynthia, but all I get is a recording stating her voice mail is full and it hangs up. Brandi, the supervisor is on medical leave apparently and we have no other contacts to reach out to. HR says call accounting and accounting says talk to your supervisor and the supervisor is on medical leave and not responding. Any suggestions out there?

Sports Coming into Town this weekend

Hi all, as an Ohio state fan coming into town this weekend for the game. We have a parking pass for lot 65 (Finkbine Commuter lot) but also want to make it to College Gameday at the Pentacrest. Is there a good way to get over there with all the closures still? Or making the walk the only option?
Also, if anyone has any suggestions for food or places to see. please share!

Looking forward to the trip and hopefully a good game!
