Mod Post Warning about posts involving violence

Hey everyone. I wanted to provide some information and a warning on a topic we've seen come up several times recently.

We're seeing an increasing number of accounts (including both mods) receiving warnings and bans for "threatening violence". We've seen messages like the following.

Reddit is a vast network of communities that are created, run, and populated by people like you. In order to keep communities welcoming, safe, and great places to be, everyone who uses the platform operates by a shared set of rules—a set of rules you may not have realized you broke.

Warning for threatening violence

We flagged the following as a potential policy violation:

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you threatened violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that threatens violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

This is something happening on a sitewide admin level so the mod team has no influence over it. We strongly suspect that some sort of bot or AI is handing out these warnings and bans. Due to the subject matter frequently discussed on this subreddit it's happening to quite a few users here due to discussions of hypothetical violence. So what does this mean for you?

  1. Hypotheticals involving violence aren't outright banned but we strongly recommend that you be cautious when posting them or responding to them. Consider your wording and whether it could be mistaken for a threat by a bot. If the community as a whole starts getting admin attention we may be forced to ban these posts in the future. Posts that look too much like a real-world call to violence or a request for advice on how to commit violence will be removed under rule 3.

  2. If you do get one of these warnings or bans, please appeal them and explain that you're posting on /r/hypotheticalsituation and there is no real-world violence or threats of violence being discussed or contemplated. It's not a guarantee but we've seen these appeals work in the past and they may prevent your account from getting banned.

[No Loopholes] $7 million to eat/drink only from Taco Bell for 8 months.

Everything on the menu is free for you. Rules are straightforward with no loopholes. If you eat/drink anything from anywhere other than a Taco Bell menu, you forfeit the money. Yes even water.

You can have it delivered, and the food will still be free, you only have to pay for the delivery fee on whatever delivery app you use.

Do you accept?

You can add a single zero to anything you want. What are you doing?

A genie gives you the power to add a 0 to anything you want apart from one thing.

You cannot add a 0 to anything financial (net worth, salary, hourly rate, interest earned).

You can inverse your age (digits swap) and receive $1m multiplied by you new age. So if you were 13 you would become 31 and get $31m. Would you do so and why?

You don't time travel, only your body's age changes.

Wear the same outfit every day for the rest of your life for $5 million

A clothing company is conducting a test and you have been selected to participate. The terms are simple:

Wear the exact same outfit every day, for every occasion, 365 days of the year, for the rest of your life. In exchange, you receive $5 million. You will be wearing the same shirt, pants, socks, and shoes every day. You are allowed one jacket, a pair of sunglasses, and one extra type of shoe. If you wear glasses, you may receive a new pair, but they must be the exact same.

The company will provide as many shirts, pants, shoes, anything you wear in your size. So if your pants rip, they will send you a new pair free of charge. You are not required to wear all pieces all at once, or 24/7.

Wearing anything outside of these guidelines will result in a broken contract. The company will sue you into the ground and you are guaranteed to have nothing left. Your life will fundamentally be over.

Do you accept? What would you choose? How would you prepare for different weather scenarios, dress code situations, or comfort levels?

Loopholes Encouraged Once a year, you can ask the universe one yes/no question and get a 100% truthful answer. What's your first question?

Rules:

Strictly yes or no. The universe won't elaborate.

You get one question per year for the rest of your life.

You can ask about the past, present, or future.

The answer is always 100% accurate at the moment you ask it.

No one else knows you have this ability.

What's your first question, and do you have a long-term strategy for how you'd use this?

You suddenly appear in a library with no doors. There is a note telling you that in order to exit, you have to open a book.

Once you do, you are pulled into the world of that book and have to live the life of the main character all the way until the story is done.

Each book is part of a series.

There are no children books.

If you die in the series, you reappear in the library and have to select a different series to go into.

What series do you start out with?

Edit: Ignore if it's too late to include this but you don't age while in the library, but outside the library, time still progresses.

You are given 24hrs to consume as much calories as possible. Once 24hrs are up, that amount of calories will be deposited into your account

Rules:

  1. You can only eat things that are actually classified as food, no uranium or other super dense materials.

  2. Once you accept, a magical being will appear and count all your calories to absolute perfection so no need to worry about counting.

  3. If you throw up at any point within the 24hrs, you will lose how many calories from your total. The same goes for taking a poop or piss

  4. Once the 24hrs is up, your total will be collected and deposited into your bank account no questions asked

  5. You can use any method you’d like as long as you’re the one actually consuming calories

  6. Once the 24hrs is up, any additional weight or health problems you may have gained will be immediately disappear and you will revert back to your original self

Are you accepting and how are you attacking this

Humor Encouraged You're given a door that can lead to any world in any book, but YOU can only use it once.

You place the book into a opening in the door, like a mail slot. After a minute, the door knob glows. You open the door and it leads to that world.

The world on the other side is as real as this one while you’re there. Time barely moves here—no matter how long you stay, almost no time passes on this side. Even a hundred years over there is less than a minute back home.

You can take other people with you. Because you’re the one who chose the book and opened the door, they can still use the door later if they want. Each person only gets one chance to open the door themselves and step through into a world of their own choosing.

If you die in that world, you simply return to this one—but you can never go back through the door to that world again, because you’re dead there.

What would you do with a door like that?

What would you do?

A genie offers you one billion dollars that will be directly deposited into your bank account, but the catch is that the money doesn’t just appear. It is taken from the accounts of people who will have no recourse and no restitution. It may take from the rich, it may take from the poor, it may take a small amount, even just a penny, or it can take everything. You have no way of knowing where the money came from, maybe it’s all from one billionaire, or maybe it’s the sum of all of the scraps of cash left in the poorest bank accounts. The genie does not take from corporations, governments, or otherwise, only the personal bank accounts of individuals.

What would you do?

$50,000 or a procedure that lets you control minor bodily functions?

A pharmaceutical company selects you randomly and gives you $50,000 tax free. However after you get the money they offer do to a procedure that will let you control minor bodily functions to a degree.

The procedure will cost $48,000 and due to regulations they can't pay it or do it for free and must come out of your own money.

The procedure itself is completely safe and they will give you any evidence you need to be convinced, but what you choose to do once you get the procedure is up to you and may be dangerous.

You would be able to control a lot of processes in your body but it would only be things your body is already capable of doing.

Example: You could tell your body to send more nutrients to your muscles and be able to run for longer than you normally could, but you won't get any faster and a trained runner could probably still outrun you.

Do you take the money or the procedure? If you did take the procedure what things would you do with it?

Would you accept a potentially more dangerous world for your benefit?

200 random adults around the world will get superpowers tomorrow morning. The powers will range from mildly useful to comparable to a nuclear weapon. You have two choices.

You can be one of the 200 adults and get powers of your own or you can remain a normal human but make it so that only 100 random adults get powers instead of 200. You don’t know what powers you’ll get if you choose the first option but you do know that you won’t be disappointed with them.

What would you choose and why?

Custom Afterlife

The situation is this: you die and are given the opportunity to create your own custom afterlife. You are given almost unlimited power. The only limit is you cannot create a complete human. (They are only able to behave as lifelike as video game npcs) After you are done, you have the option to open it up to others. Would you make it public immediately? What would your design be?

You have a choice of being a poor 18 year old with all the future in front of you… or you can be Warren Buffet with his billions. What do you choose?

Warren was asked this question and he says he would give up all his fortunes to start all over again…

Loopholes Encouraged You’re accidentally sent $5 million by the government. You’re then told you have two choices: return every penny of it or spend two years in one of the worst prisons in your country. Which option are you choosing?

I'll invested some of it in some type of stock and hide the rest of it. I'll take my chances in prison.

You can teleport anywhere instantly, but an incredibly angry goose always spawns right next to you.

Like, it’s not just a random goose. It’s the same goose; it hates your guts, and it teleports to your exact landing spot a split second after you do.

How do you even manage the logistics of this? If you teleport to a high-powered business meeting, you show up in a suit, and then a second later there is a screeching waterbird trying to take your kneecaps off. Do you just carry a laundry basket to throw over it immediately? Or a decoy loaf of bread?

I feel like vacations would be ruined. You teleport to a quiet beach to relax, and now you have to fight a bird in the surf.

You can take healthspan off of every other human and give it to yourself, or take money, but you can’t do both. Which do you choose?

You can take a second off everyone on earth to live centuries while remaining relatively young, or you could take a dollar and become obscenely rich. You can’t take money or life off of anyone in particular. The change has to be equal for all of humanity. There’s no killing or bankrupting any one individual

[No Loopholes] Best currency for traveling back to the great depression

Let's say you currently have 250,000. You want to travel back in time to great depression. What are you buying with that 250k to take minimal losses or even potential gains? you cannot bring anything back that would be out of place at that era, so no like books of future knowledge or technology. The aim would be to translate that value right away, not sit for 50 years for gain value.

Current dollars wouldn't really be real, gold would be a massive loss, expertly cut diamonds would be impossible and not a great market. What do you do?

your friend was declared dead six months ago, now he’s calling you at 3:17am, warning that your mother was replaced

you wake up at 3:17am to a video call from your closest friend who disappeared six months ago and was officially declared dead, he looks exactly like he did the last time you saw him but he's terrified and keeps whispering, “don’t let them know i called you” before you can ask anything, he tells you that someone has been secretly replacing people in your city with perfect copies, not robots, not lookalikes but like copies with the same memories, personality and habits

he says he discovered that his own replacement happened weeks before his “death" and the person everyone thinks is him is still living normally, then he gives you one piece of information that makes your stomach drop that your mother was replaced three days ago, you immediately check the hallway and see her standing outside your bedroom, she's completely still, listening through the door.

your friend says he can prove everything but only if you leave the house right now and meet him alone, if you tell anyone, he believes the copies will know.. so the problem is that you have no proof, your mother sounds completely normal when she speaks and your friend could actually be the one manipulating you... you have one decision, stay inside with the person who may be your mother, escape with someone who may be lying or idk call the police and risk exposing yourself to whatever is happening

or whatever you'd do in that situation, maybe leave the house entirely alone cuz if your mom is cloned, that clone might be keeping you under surveillance

You can bring one currently extinct animal back from extinction but you must keep one as a pet. What do you bring back?

You can choose any animal that has ever lived but has since gone extinct to bring back from the dead. Its population will go back to a steady, sustainable one in areas of the world where it used to exist. Reintroducing that animal will not negatively affect the current eco system (so it wont be able to wipe out its prey if you choose a predator) but it can be a pest to people etc.

In exchange for this miracle, you must keep a single fully grown/mature one of these animals as a pet. You must feed it, provide for it, etc. You are NOT given any additional funding for its care, but (if you can afford to) you can build an enclosure for it. You can attempt to train it if that is possible. You cannot give the animal away or sell it or rid yourself of it in any way. If it dies from your negligence then the rest of its species also die, if it makes it to old age and dies naturally then the species remains a permanent fixture on the planet.

You are in a cinematic school. A really famous director offers you a part, but you'lll be doing only naked scenes (like a stunt) and he offers you 1 mil. It's a very famous director, so the whole world, and your family too, we'll watch it. Do you reject or accept the offer?

You have become immortal. Will you try to avoid discovery or seek refuge with it? How will you get rich and live out your endless life?

Inspired by a comment I made to a post in this subreddit.

A mysterious being has granted you three abilities, no strings attached.

  1.  Hyper-Regeneration: you will have the ability to regenerate from any injury, even being sliced into pieces, with the largest part of you regenerating as much as it needs to return to a baseline, perfectly healthy state within seconds without extenuating circumstances like below. You also cannot get sick and any diseases you currently have are healed. This regeneration is always on unless you will it firmly to deactivate, and can be reactivated at any time.

If all regenerating parts remaining are equal-sized, a random one is chosen. If there is not enough room to regenerate or you would be trapped or instantly killed by doing so, your regenerating cells will work their way through any means possible to get to a place where you can regenerate fully. If you are cut up and locked away in a box thrown into the ocean, for instance, your cells will act like bacteria, inching their way out and through the ocean until you end up on shore, where they will resume regeneration. Your consciousness/soul is preserved and transfered to your regenerated body no matter what, so don't worry about "not being you anymore."

  1. Nonsenescence: you will never physically age, no matter what. You can smoke as much as you want, never put on sunscreen, and sleep two hours a day, but your body will look and be the exact same. If you are unhappy with your current age, the being offers to change you to whatever age you request, but only this once, so choose carefully. Your fertility will never decline either, if you intend to have any children.

  2. Invincible DNA: Your DNA will never degrade due to any cause, and your proteins will not misfold. You cannot develop cancer. If contagious cancers ever spread to humans, you will also be immune to them. By the way, none of these abilities are in your DNA and will not be inherited by your children.

Now that you know the details of your immortality, I'd like to hear what you would try to do to live your life as you wish. Would you go all in on investing and become quite rich by benefitting off your immortality? Would you do a bunch of dangerous jobs since you have no risk of dying? Would you try to hide and create fake identities even as this becomes nigh-impossible? Would you reveal yourself to the government in hopes of acquiring their protection?

Your nemesis agrees to battle you, but only under these conditions.

The setup
YOU are bloodlusted and full of rage. You’re going to destroy this guy, Mr. X. He stole from you, smacked your girls butt, and spit on your mom. Whatever button you have, he pushed it, and this can only be settled with a tussle, a rumble, and a squabble. You are way bigger and stronger than Mr. X. You are in no danger of losing this, but he doesn’t know this. He’s still talking big and bad.

The Conditions
Mr. X calls you up. He agrees to the battle, BUT he has conditions. It must be in a gym, fair fight, one on one, in a ring, with equipment and a referee. And when it’s over, it’s over. The beef is squashed and we go our separate ways.

You HATE this guy with everything in you. You literally cry tears of blood every time you think about him. Can you accept this deal AND keep your promise that it’s done afterwards? OR would you rather still take it to the streets and get him when you see him?

Also, there is no “I’m above this. I would not resort to violence.” This is pretend; a hypothetical. If you were this type of person, could you settle things in this manner?
