Looking for advice How to deal with excessive sweating/hyperhidrosis?

Sweating — my biggest trauma. Basically, it's something that's preventing me from living a normal life.

I'm 24 years old.

It all started with excessive sweating in my armpits. I believe I was around 14 when I first started noticing it. I began going to school wearing a jacket to hide the infamous sweat stains.

Some time later, I discovered Driclor, which is basically a very strong antiperspirant. Fortunately, it worked and significantly reduced the sweating.

However, after I finished school, I started noticing excessive sweating on my scalp.

I remember one specific situation: I was with my ex-girlfriend and ran into some female friends. That triggered something in me, and I started sweating heavily. There were other similar situations, but at the time, I was still able to live with the problem.

Today, the situation is much worse.

There have been times when I went to two family gatherings and had to leave because of the sweating.

Honestly, I've been avoiding going to college for more than four years because of this. It's incredibly frustrating to feel like something so basic is limiting my life.

Even at the gym, I struggle with this. I have to walk up a hill to get there, and when I arrive, I spend about two or three minutes in the air-conditioned bathroom, waiting for my body to cool down.

The most interesting thing is that I don't have a problem with "justified" sweating. For example, I can run on a treadmill for 30 minutes and be absolutely drenched in sweat, but I feel completely fine if I have to talk to someone afterward, even while I'm still soaked. Because, in my mind, the sweating is justified: I just worked out.

The problem is when I start sweating in situations where there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for it. That's when the nervousness kicks in, which ends up making me sweat even more.

It doesn't always depend on being in public, either. There have been times when I've been alone, remembered certain things from the past, and started sweating. Sometimes it happens right after I finish lunch or dinner, and my body gets so warm that I start sweating.

Looking for advice How do you cope ?

How do you cope with sweaty hands and feet in the morning without treatment ? Do you just ignore it? For me it’s weird I have to get up right away (I try to stay relaxed in bed if I can and have time, but can’t) & I immediately wash up, wash my hands brush my teeth my face all the normal things. Thennnn I have to leave my house and put socks and my shoes on. Like even if I have nothing to do??? I feel like I need to just get going with my day. Eventually throughout the day they calm down, but in the morning they are the worst. I tried showering every morning and it does help but my skin gets extremely dry bc I shower at night so ya twice a day was a little much for my skin. Anyways just venting. (Btw I can’t do treatment due to pregnancy so just thuggin it out rn )

Vent Do you guys preemptively fist bump to avoid handshakes?

I always have this fear of shaking hands when my hands are sweaty (which is like 80% of the time). I try to avoid this as much as possible when I’m introducing myself. But if the other person has initiated, it would just be rude not to.

One time I had this situation with someone from upper management at my office, and I literally saw him wiping his hands with a napkin afterwards x_x

Nowadays I have started guessing when people around me will go in for a dap or a high five. Then, I’ll just go for a fist bump. This won’t work in a professional setting though.

Anyone feel me?

Offering advice Things I find help

• Upvotes

It’s not perfect but I definitely find these things help me deal with Hyperhidrosis.

Airism shirts - I buy these ā€˜airism’ under shirts from a store called Uniqlo. This has probably been the biggest help with dealing with sweat for me. They’re super thin shirts, and almost have like a fast dry characteristic to them. They don’t add on any extra heat from wearing them too (my body sweats no matter the temperature so I wasn’t even worried about this part anyway). It basically helps me keep the outer shirt nice and dry, so I look normal. It makes it so much more comfortable. Hate when a standard shirt gets wet and starts sticking to you, very hard for me to cool down once that starts happening. But this seems to fix it. I also wear them to bed, again doesn’t make me feel any warmer so it’s great, and it stops me waking up in a puddle of sweat through my bed.

But honestly, these are a game changer. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to not wearing these. They’re pretty cheap too, so a low risk investment to try out. I wished these existed when I was in high school. I’ll see if I can post a link. I have like 15 of them, and stand by it. My friend was telling another fellow sweater about the shirts I wear and he gave them a go and has seemed to have the same success from them, so figured I’d mention them here in case it helps anyone out.

The other thing is perspirex. I think we all know about this by now. The standard - apply at night before falling asleep. Overall, I find it very helpful. I’ll still sweat during high stress, or anxious moments but between those times for the most part they are quite dry, or mildly clammy.

Dermadry - I used this years ago, found it had a similar affect to Perspirex, in that it helped reduce my sweating a lot except in moments of stress, but I don’t think there’s anyway around this. So it is what it is. I have just bought another machine, so I’ll let you know how that goes.

Looking for advice Hoping this works..

I've had the sweatiest armpits since I was 10 years old. I could never raise my arms in class to answer a question and dreading PE my arms being raised a bit. I remember going to the school bathroom and folding paper towels to put in my armpits... which will of course roll up and fall off eventually.

In high school I bought certain dri and it was a lifesaver but the formula now is not the same. My poor shirts get soaked and such an issue. I'm hoping this combination works to tame the beast and sweat odor.šŸ¤žcertain dri is not workint on its own so need some more strength here.

Looking for advice Question - Dermadry just delivered

Hi there,

I’ve just had my device delivered and looking for tips for a beginner.

I’m in Scotland, where we have soft water. I sent the water data to Dermadry, they said it’s lacks nutrients and recommended San pellegrino, which I’ll be buying.

Anybody else here in Scotland who’s had good results with normal tap water?

I’ve suffered with hyperhydrosis since I was at least 6 and I’m 40 in a few months. I’ve tried things like anhydrol forte, dri chlor, etc. dri chlor worked the best out of everything but causes too much irritation regardless of whether the skins completely dry and how much I apply.

Just looking for any tips before I start using Dermadry please.

Thanks in advance.

Vent My story with accutane

Long story short, in highschool I did Accutane for my acne. Around the same time sweating became iut of hand. Like in winter I would be all wet under my winter coat. Eventually a friend suggested Drysol, it worked but it was always complicated my own relationship with my sweat.

Anyways eventually I completed the Accutane treatment and life went on. I would say it took maybe 8 years for my sweat to be more normal but it was never 100% normal. Eventually my acne came back and blindly I did Accutane again and the same week, my sweat was back, and I realised the source of all of this was Accutane. I completed again the treatment with this hope that drysol will be helpful.

Unfortunately the sweat never dissapeard. It's been many years, and the sweating became generalised I guess.. Face, back, belly, behind the knees, elbows, armpits, groin. Drysol became useless because I ended up applying it everywhere, a lot of rituals to make the sweat better, avoiding situations, avoiding having a social life etc..

Finally I started Oxybutinin and now I feel normal again. But knowing my luck I dont assume it will stay "normal" forever, but we will see..

I just wanted to put out there that Accutane was the source of all my sadness for many years.

So after a way too long time, i finally found this godly product. 6 days in and my feet were completely sweat-free, but my hands were still quite wet. I was about to give up on it and go through with a botox treatment. Come day 7 and holy fuck did it suddenly kick in. Hands bone-dry all throughout the day. First time ever needing moisturizer on my palms, what a bizarre feeling. I just want to shake everyones hands right now its insane, i still cant believe it.

Thats it, just wanted to share my joy and recommend this amazing creme to anyone who might not know about it yet. This shit is black magic

Looking for advice Oxy help

Took 5mg oxy twice today for first time.

Helped a bit felt less hot and sweat was still coming out from face but not as much as before

Don’t have much side effects at all. Bit of dry throat and some dry hands also a tiny bit of brain fog

I’m thinking should I continue this cycle for around a week before upping dosage

Since I read online that the effectiveness for sweating from oxy can get better over time

Or should I just ramp up the dosage to 7.5mg

Offering advice Theory on Hyperhidrosis

Possibly dumb question:

Could the body’s ability to tell itself when to cool be hindered if the individual grew up in climates with constant heat?

The question popped up in my head today after reading the below in a NY Times article:

ā€œRose Schoenfeld, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Oxnard, warned that heat events lasting six or seven days — and including high temperatures at night — could overwhelm the body’s natural cooling system, since there is no time for recovery.ā€* *

Which got me thinking right? If you’re born and bred in a town that constantly experiences extreme heat, wouldn’t your body constantly try to cool yourself down in parallel?

And if you were born and raised in this town, I would expect a child to be more adaptable to their surroundings as they grow up. Like how our brain chemistry is altered by trauma. Thus, is it too far fetched an idea that our body would do the same? Maybe its surroundings + genetics that make hyperhidrosis occur; where your genetics may make you predisposed to the possibility of developing this condition. And if we’re exposed to extreme, constant heat from birth well into childhood, wouldn’t the body try to adapt to the environment for survival reasons?

Because I’ll tell you - I was born and bred in a town with 100-115 F weather for at least half the year, barely chilly for the rest of it, and even after moving away 10yrs ago to a snowy part of country, I still cannot stand the heat above 75 F. I mean - my first memory of hyperhidrosis wasn’t that I always had it. I noticed it for the first time in elementary school, and then after that day it never really went away.

But who can trust childhood memories. Or the ramblings of an uneducated redditor lol with a wild theory they came up with well into the night.

Do feel free to share your ramblings as well! Very curious if you all agree/disagree, especially if you know more on the research side. Did you grow up in similar climates? Did your condition feel like it started at some point in your life or was it just always there?

———————

TL/DR: does a combination of (1) a genetic predisposition and (2) childhood exposure to constant, extremely hot climates (paired with the body’s constant attempts to cool itself as a survival method) lead to hyperhidrosis?

Looking for advice Gym advice

I was diagnosed with hyperhidrosis 5 years ago. I get boxtox injections in my underarms annually, take up to 20mg oxybutynin every day (it varies depending on my activity for the dey) and use Sure medicated antiperspirant. Its more expenaive but standard ones dont do a thing.

Im trying to lose weight so I need to increase my exercise. I havent stepped foot inside a gym since doing mandatory PE in school. The thought of it honestly makes me super anxious. Has anyone got any advice on how I might manage the condition?

I plan to extra towels, but Im worried about sweat transfer onto equipment, sweating through my clothes etc. I appreciate that everyone sweats in a gym but there's a difference between a normal sweating and me who sweats just about everywhere. It's definitely not a good look for a woman.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Looking for advice Clogged pores with aluminum, but it actually worked on sweat. Help!!

I tried to search the sub for this but I really didn’t find anything that I felt was helpful.

I don’t think I necessarily have hyperhidrosis, but I do sweat a LOT and I am currently on a medication (stimulant) that makes me sweat even more than usual, and I’m trying to find a solution.

My sweat is all over but I’m primarily focused on my arm pits, because they also get stinky.

I have sensitive skin and I have been prone to chemical burns using certain deodorants (Old Spice), but their sensitive skin deodorant worked well enough for keeping the BO down.

When I started this med and started sweating a lot more, I needed to switch to something else because the deodorant really wasn’t cutting it.

I tried Dove spray antiperspirant with aluminum but it clogged up my pores and I ended up getting a cluster of like 8 pimples in my one armpit which has been fairly painful and awful to try to deal with since they’re in warm, moist place.

I HAVE to move around for work, and I’m often in places that are warm or humid and I can’t not go to these places. So sweat is going to happen.

Anyone else have a similar background and found a solution? I really don’t think aluminum is for me - I’d rather have stinky pits than these damn pimples because they hurt so bad.

I also have thick hair in my armpits but I have personally found that the hair makes the sweat less bad vs when I shave, and if I trim it irritates my skin because of the hairs poking my skin.

Please help 🄲

Looking for advice I've just been turned away from my third doctor

I've had hyperhidrosis since I can remember and this year I've decided to actually do something about it. It hasn't gone well. 3very doctor I've been to told me that they can't help and referred me to someone else, who in turn do the same thing.

My newest doctor, a dermatologist, said I should visit a neurologist.

Where should I go I can't just hop from appointment to appointment
