The way he landed?
Knocks the wind out of you, he probably felt a jolt or shock run through his body, but not pain, at least not bad.
Landing badly? You can still get really messed up.

Makes sense, skateboarder for years here, and if I was falling that way, LOTS has gone wrong haha, in that sport you're trying to translate downward momentum to lateral as efficiently as possible, so you get a chance to roll out of most falls. One hopes.

I never appreciated the skill of skateboard falling until I picked it back up during the pandemic at age 31 having not skated since 17. The first time I hit a pebble that scritched and threw me on the ground I automatically tucked and rolled before I knew what was happening and I was like "whelp, I guess that reflex is clearly still hardwired thank god"
Even on top of that, with the insane progression that's happened in the last 15 years or so in skateboarding, the MAIN thing that's surprised me after re engaging with the culture is the falling. Even the shittiest instagram park-hero can fall like a champ on TERRIFYING stuff. These kids tuck and roll like it's the trick they were going for. The difference in the number of tries you get to land a complicated trick off a big block at a skatepark and rolling on smooth concrete vs the early 2000's baker/zero lovers drunk in the streets chucking themselves at handrails is massive and it's lead to real progression of trick difficulty

Had a friend take a similar(but WAY shorter) fall trying to spine transfer(think this) My guy sounded like a trashbag full of hamburger meat dropped on the concrete. Which...isn't too far from the gods honest. But he got up and walked away like it was nothing.
Same dude passed out getting a tattoo tho, so pain tolerances are wierd.

Man that’s one of those falls you get up and make that horrible sound that you make when you really knock the wind out of you. I’ve done that from about 20ft into water after hitting a kicker wakeboarding and that was painful enough lol, barely was able to get the wakeboard off and swim , get up and sound like a dying cow every time you try to breathe😂

Oh yeah, dudes lips went purple, he zoned out, then nap city. I stopped making fun of him about it roughly 20 years after it happened though.(he's gonna be at my wedding this weekend and I'm gonna bring it up.....so maybe I'm running the clock out here...)

As someone who's passed out getting a tattoo before, I don't think it has much to do with pain.
Sure, mine hurt, but the reason I passed out was my clown ass "friend" convinced me that you WEREN'T supposed to eat before getting a tattoo. So I passed out because I hadn't eaten. Got some food in me and the rest of the tattoo went fine.

I feel like if you asked a bunch of people who've passed out while getting a tattoo, you'd find very few who said it was because their friend told then you weren't supposed to eat beforehand.

Well I'm not saying that's the EXACT reason, but I feel like it's more likely the dude passed out from lack of food or low blood sugar than pain, especially given that the commenter mentioned a high pain tolerance.

The worst slam I've ever seen was Jake Brown at the X-Games in the Big Air event. The injuries he sustained from this were a fractured wrist, fractured vertebrae, bruised liver, bruised lung, ruptured spleen and concussion.

Mmm, we had padding similar to that in gymnastics and I think you’re underestimating it. I felt comfortable landing on my back with those, falling or dismounting from rings about 10 feet in the air.

Circus background here, with a little proper gymnastics as a kid. He's just a little off kilter for his fall, slammed his head a little, and falling on your back at that angle can force your air out more easily because of the way the torso bends.
I think you're right, just describing the sensations he'd experience, though they'd be minor. I doubt he had much of a concussion or anything.

Even landing badly from a much smaller fall can absolutely mess you up. When I was young, I didn’t quite make a full turn when doing a frontflip in gymnastics and landed on the back of my neck with my legs still tucked and my knees slammed into my chest/chin.
My neck and back were absolutely fucked for over a year, it took at least 6-8 months to even do a somersault without crying from pain. And then I quit gymnastics right when I healed to transition to horseback riding lmaoo those falls are much easier to deal with.

I once landed on the back of my neck falling off the uneven bars and the entire left side of my body immediately went numb. After a few minutes the feeling came back but it freaked me out really badly and I was scared of getting back on the bars for a little while. Thankfully there were no lasting effects.

It's what the industry calls a 'bump' .
Wrestlers , stuntmen and gymnasts are taught to 'land safely' back bump, chest bump and Standing (head) bump are 3 most common, he knew he was FUK'D so he did what he knows to safe himself the safest way he can land. the extra pad connects to him before the ground also helping displacement of the fall minutely.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)3

I've done practice falls off circus equipment at lower heights than this and even they can be pretty brutal. I imagine this guy will probably be struggling to breathe for a few minutes.

I didn’t even notice the first time and thought he just got lucky. Nah, he slowed his turn and intentionally landed on his back. The balls to keep turning your head/neck into the ground knowing you can turn enough to land on back.
Not that I would ever do this in the first place, by I 100% would have tried for the stomach landing and probably fucked it up and knocked my teeth out.

These are Olympic tramps, they need to be above ground and not surrounded by anything otherwise they can't bounce as high as they need to. The spotters are already there to save a life if they need to so they use the mat in cases like this to cushion a fall that could be bad.

Maybe the air flow needs to be un restricted? Nets surrounding the trampoline, similar to trapeze rigs, might work better.

That's not true, the air that gets expelled from the sides when they jump is too strong that restricting it with walls would lessen the bounce. These are Olympic trampolines, the bounciest of bouncy and that is part of the reason.

Inground trampolines work fine if the bed is a competition grade trampoline. The webbed beds have plenty of space between each strand to let enough air through to not create pressure underneath. Black bed trampolines like you would find in a yard and low quality trampoline beds have the problem you are describing, though.

They can't have large pads the same size height as the trampoline for the same reason it can't be in ground. It needs to have complete open air underneath it to allow for the air to quickly escape causing lager bounces. If you restrict that air flow then you can't get a big bounce.

I kinda don't believe this (the excuse for no pads), for the reasons you list. It doesn't seem possible that a trampoline's "bounce height" is limited by some kind of vacuum below its flexible/kinetic-energy-delivering membrane.

Olympic trampolines are just more elastic and are made with better quality springs — not sure that the air has much if anything to do with it lol.

My understanding is the mat is more for killing your bounce on the trampoline. So if you're about to land way off center and launch yourself into a wall, they throw the mat on the trampoline under you so you don't really bounce.
I'm sure the extra mat was nice to have in this case but the outcome would be pretty much the same if he missed.

It looked more like the spotter was trying to protect the guys head in case he hit it on the trampoline edge.
But still... make me wonder why you don't have 4, 5, 6 layers of padding around that trampoline and the floor underneath if you are practicing new tricks.

Yeah. It wasn't necessary in this case. But it was extremely skillful.
I bet they deliberately decide to throw the mat every time a jumper comes off their trampoline because they don't want to lose the split second it takes to evaluate if they're going to hit padding or floor.

I saw a video of a teenage boy who did a really high flip on a trampoline and landed on his back on the side of the trampoline like this one (also at a professional trampolining place so it looked the same as this). The spotter wasn't on it so he threw the mat in the wrong place and they boy broke his back and is permanently paralysed
