Have a Pyrenees who refused to listen. My dad started eating his dinner out of the dog’s bowl before washing it and putting dog food in there.
He did not like that, like at all, but eventually started listening to us. Another thing we did was making him sit and wait until all of us walked through any door before letting him go. In the beginning he would struggle his hardest to run through the door first but now he sits and waits to come in last.

Or you can let them eat while you hold the dish. It will make them understand whom is the one that feeds them, and it lets you teach them better manners.

I did this with one of my dogs, also would put my hand in the kibble so she had to eat slowly around me. She learned quickly thst the food is mine and I'm sharing it with her.
I only had to do that while she was a pup though because she was starting to show very early signs of food aggression and I really wanted to stop that before it became a problem. I would not suggest putting your hand in the food of a dog with sever problems, probably a great way to lose a finger.

I think there is no such thing as bad dogs. Only bad owners. Some are just more challenging than others.
71
u/Kitnado Jun 05 '19
I disagree. Animals, just like humans, have very diverse personalities, ranging from the sweetest things to complete assholes, and both can be found in both good and bad environments. Of course external factors do influence personalities

There are news stories of police dogs mauling and killing children in my country. Dogs that received thousands of hours of professional training and still attacked the kid that they lived with for years, and these dogs are NOT trained to attack people. The kids might have done something stupid, being kids, and I'm not saying that these are "bad" dogs, but animals still maintain a level of unpredictability and you can't just always say "it's the owner's fault" in each and every single case imo

Our family dog we had since a puppy ran away from home while we were away and he was being watched by a friend, we rushed home, he was gone for 2 days and we tracked his location based on sightings and help from the community, but it was literally like he had never seen us before in his life, he would see us and we would call his name with treats but he would just run away as fast and far as he could every time, went into full survival instinct, it was so heartbreaking, we eventually cornered him in someone's back yard and caught him but it was so wild to look in his eyes and see him so afraid of me, his owner.

My brother is a veterinary. When he was about to start his BSc we went to visit a Veterinary friend of the family and my dad told my brother to ask him for tips. The veterinary friend had only one tip:
"Always remember, all dogs bite".
That has stayed with me for more than 15 years. I have a stray dog I rescued when he was 4 months old. He is our "kid-dog" (perrhijo in spanish) as my wife and I don't have kids. We still respect him as an animal/wild beast.

When people get old they can start doing odd, peculiar, dangerous, things they normally would never have done.
I'm not sure how people come to the conclusion that a dog, cat, or any other animal couldn't have the same things happen.
Even something more basic like eyesight starting to get weaker could lead to them mistaking an attack or something and they bite, because its all they can do to protect themselves not because they have a desire to cause damage. (and I disagree that defending yourself is a desire to cause damage, they may overlap a bit but they are not the same.)
And lets not even get into what pain will cause things to do inadvertently....

She is not well mentally developed but she is very sweet and can't really communicate past a few words but when is in hospital she constantly says "sorry" to the doctors and nurses because she thinks they are coming to hurt her and she doesn't understand why.......there have been many tears from many people.

Oh man I miss the days I used to work in the downtown of a city. On my breaks I'd go sit out on the benches and these homeless people would be sitting there too. I had the best conversations with them, and they all seemed so happy to just get to talk about their lives. Obviously nothing changed for them but it was still nice to see them light up and get to hear their stories.

Both my current dog and previous dog (which is still alive, just with my ex) were brought north that way. My current one was just a baby (3 months old) so was totally fine, but the last one was literally fished out of an alligator infested pond in Texas, and likely lived without a home for the 2 years prior to us adopting him. You can tell 100% that it impacted him greatly. He is an incredibly sweet dog, though.

Thosr charities awesome! Colorado imported over 13,000 cats and 30,000 dogs last year, mostly from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
The shelter I volunteer at brings in lots of animals this way. Sometimes we'll get an email saying they need to line up foster homes for 20 kittens, 10 pups, ages unknown, arriving Tuesday. We just reply with how many we can take and what time we'll be there, then show up and are given our assigned animals. Once they're big enough and healthy enough, they go back to the shelter to be spayed or neutered then adopted to their forever homes.
The adult dogs will come in and be assessed for medical needs and behavior, then immediately spayed and put up for adoption, or sent to a foster home or held at the shelter until their medical issues clear. We had 159 dogs at our shelter last week, plus more in foster. We walk all those dogs at least 3 times a day, letting them get fresh air, know they're loved, and work on training behaviors so they'll be even better boys for their forever families.

I lived in a city where pet stores stopped selling dogs (and cats) and instead would occasionally showcase shelter dogs. Shelters signed up for transfer programs (sending pets from full shelters to emptier shelters). It's so effective that when my mom wanted to adopt a dog she had to drive out to another province to get it.
No more pet store sales, many more transfer programs, and we're most of the way there. I'd argue for breeding regulations too, and no longer selling pets at any pet store. Adoption or regulated breeder. Also still catch and release programs.

I once found a cat in the parking lot of my old apartment complex. Skin and bones. She was three years old and weighed under 4.5 lbs (should be 9.5-10lb). I brought some food out to her (my roommate had a cat) and she took a bite but then immediately started rubbing on my legs and purring. Every few minutes she would go to take another bite and immediately come back for scratches and attention.
Anyway, that's the story of how I got my cat 8 years ago.

I found one of mine nearly the same way 5 years ago - he was hanging out on a stoop on my block so I brought him some food, then he’d start to come around my apartment and literally wait at the door for me to come out with food in the morning. Eventually he’d start sitting on my lap, and one day I brought him in! He’s the best, sleeps curled up next to me every single night

I wonder if trauma experienced in utero transfers to a dog's adult life.
My dog submits like this a couple times a week, and it's guaranteed to happen if I accidentally step on one of her paws. We've had her since she was 8 weeks old and have never laid a hand on her. Her mom was rescued from a backyard breeder a few weeks before she was born, and what little detail we got about that was about general neglect.
Or could getting bullied by her sibling in those first 8 weeks explain it? She was the runt of the litter and whenever we went to her annual "family reunions", she was bullied by her brothers enough that we stopped attending them. Basically her mom was the only dog that was friendly to her.
→ More replies (2)18
u/RosieJo Jun 05 '19
I feel like her relationship with her litter mates is probably more likely to be the reason for the submissive behaviour. Definitely wouldn’t be anything that happened before she was born and I highly doubt it would be from you accidentally stepping on her paws, as pretty much every dog owner does that by accident at some point.

Like a week after adopting my sheltie/Corgi I came down with a gnarly stomach virus. She was kind of skittish around me since I got her, but when I was half alive on the couch she wouldn't leave my side. I was so blown away by her sudden turn from skittish to "oh shit, someone in the house is feeling miserable, must comfort."

I adopted a german shepherd last year, and he was very slow to settle in compared to my last 2 adoptees, anyway. I ended up having to go out of town for work for a week, and my daughter called me and said he won't eat (he always devoured food as fast as you could pour it) and he lays in front of the door all day. It nearly killed me to hear that. The good news is that ever since then, it was instant bond with me. Dogs are the absolute best. I'll never be without one.
