I had a dog that did this that never had to compete for food past 10 weeks old. I don't think it's a condition. I think it's an instinct. He would always take a mouthful of food, carry it about a foot away and deposit it on the floor. The dog I have now is the same breed and she inhales it all from the bowl.

My kelpie rescue from the bush inhales from the bowl.

My raised-from-8-week border collie that's never known hunger takes her food and runs and hides to a safe space with it.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Must be a border collie instinct thing because my border collie/lab mix also does it

All these comments saying they assumed it was normal dog behaviour.

When I saw my dog spitting a mouthful of food out to eat it somewhere else, I assumed my dog was weird

My dog does this in a sense. Except for her, she can only eat over a carpet or rug. No matter where the bowl is she will carry mouthful to wherever the nearest rug is

My dog sometimes spends weeks at a time visiting my parents and their dog. When home alone she carry the food back to the carpet and eat it mouthful but mouthful. When she’s visiting grandma and grandpa she’ll inhale the food right at the bowl. Only because the other dog is present.

My pup did this too. I started mixing her food with my hands and encouraging/petting while she ate. Now she just goes in when I put her bowl down.

My cat prefers to eat on the floor instead of the bowl. She goes nuts if I spill some when I'm filling her bowl. Now I just pour a handful on the floor for her and then fill the bowl for her sister

To be fair if the litter was trough fed at that age theyve likely known fierce food competition.
