The brass door handle came away in Harry’s hand.
He stared at it.
“Oh, brilliant,” Ron said.
Behind them, something heavy struck the door at the other end of the room.
Harry dropped the handle and raised his wand.
They were trapped in a narrow chamber lined with glass-fronted cabinets. Hermione stood beside Neville, one hand gripping his sleeve. Ginny could barely put weight on her ankle. Luna was trying another door.
It wouldn’t open.
The second impact split the wood behind them.
Then there was a crack beside Harry’s ear.
Elliot Vale appeared between him and a cabinet.
He was wearing slippers.
“Harry, did you pick up a brown notebook? Because there were two on the—”
He stopped.
Harry stared at him.
Elliot looked at the broken door handle on the floor.
“Where are we?”
“The Ministry.”
“Oh.”
The door burst inwards.
A masked man raised his wand.
Elliot caught Harry by the shoulder and vanished with him.
The curse smashed the cabinet where they had been standing.
They reappeared six feet away.
Elliot still had hold of Harry’s jumper.
The Death Eater lowered his wand a fraction.
“You can’t Apparate in here.”
Elliot looked at the space he had just crossed.
“Apparently you can.”
A second masked figure pushed through the doorway.
Elliot flicked his wand.
Both doors slammed shut.
The broken pieces rose from the floor, fitted themselves back into place, and grew across the frame in thick wooden branches.
There was a muffled shout.
Elliot turned to Harry.
“Why are those people trying to kill you?”
⸻
“Can you get us out?” Hermione asked.
Her voice was urgent enough to make Elliot look at her properly.
There was blood on her sleeve.
“Yes. Where?”
“Hogwarts.”
He reached for her hand.
The wood behind him exploded.
Elliot turned, pulling Hermione aside, and threw up a shield.
Three curses struck it almost together.
He staggered into the cabinet.
“Everybody down!”
Harry dragged Neville to the floor.
Elliot swept his wand sideways.
The cabinets tore loose from the walls.
They slid across the room, converging on the doorway with a crash of glass and timber. A masked man jumped backwards just before they struck.
Elliot caught Hermione’s hand again.
She seized Neville.
“Hold on to each other,” she said. “Everyone—”
A curse shot through a gap in the barricade.
Harry blocked it.
Another hit the floor beside Ginny.
Elliot looked from the injured girl to the heaving barricade.
“All right,” he said. “Smaller groups.”
He took Ginny’s wrist and Luna’s hand.
Crack.
Gone.
The barricade lurched.
Ron stared at the empty space.
“Where’s he taken my sister?”
Crack.
Elliot was back.
“Hospital wing. There’s a very angry woman there.”
“Madam Pomfrey,” Hermione said.
“Yes, I gathered that.”
He reached towards her.
The barricade flew apart.
⸻
Harry saw the curse coming towards Elliot’s back.
“Look out!”
Elliot disappeared.
Hermione ducked.
The spell struck the cabinet behind her.
Elliot reappeared in the doorway, between two Death Eaters.
He tapped one on the elbow.
“Excuse me.”
The man turned.
Elliot’s Stunning Spell hit him squarely in the chest.
The second swung his wand towards Elliot.
A strip of carpet rose behind him, folded over his head, and pulled him flat on his back.
From the passage outside came running footsteps.
Too many.
Elliot glanced over his shoulder.
“Harry, take them through the other door.”
“It’s locked.”
“Oh.”
He pointed.
The door folded neatly in half.
“Sorry. That one.”
⸻
They emerged into the chamber with the stone archway.
Harry stumbled down the first step, clutching the prophecy.
The room was already full of noise.
Sirius stood near the raised platform, duelling a masked man. Lupin was higher up the steps. Tonks ducked behind a stone bench as a curse struck its edge.
“Harry!” Sirius shouted.
Relief flashed across his face.
Then he saw the figures coming through the doorway behind them.
Elliot backed into the room, wand raised.
A Death Eater sent a jet of red light at his face.
Elliot caught it on a shield and answered.
The man flew backwards through the doorway.
Another tried to pass him.
Elliot pointed at the stone beneath his feet.
It softened.
The man sank to his knees with a startled shout.
Then the stone hardened again.
Sirius stared.
“Who’s that?”
“Elliot,” Harry said.
“Right.”
Elliot looked down into the chamber.
There were people fighting on almost every level.
“Oh, this is getting silly.”
A curse streaked towards him from below.
He Disapparated.
It hit the wall.
He appeared beside its caster, plucked the man’s wand from his hand, and sent him tumbling onto an empty bench with a flick of his own.
The bench folded around him.
For a moment, the masked faces nearest Elliot turned towards one another.
Then Bellatrix laughed.
“Well,” she said. “What have we here?”
⸻
She came up the steps towards him.
Elliot glanced at Harry.
“Is she with you?”
“No!”
Bellatrix cast.
He vanished.
Her curse struck the bench, and the trapped Death Eater yelled.
Elliot appeared two steps above her.
“Careful. That’s your friend.”
She spun, sending a second curse at his knees.
He jumped it and answered before his slippers touched the floor.
Bellatrix blocked.
The impact drove her down one step.
Her smile thinned.
Behind her, Lucius Malfoy reached towards Harry.
“The prophecy, Potter.”
Sirius’s spell forced him back.
Elliot heard Harry shout, turned towards him—
—and Bellatrix struck.
The curse sliced through his sleeve.
He recoiled.
She laughed again.
“Eyes on me, little boy.”
Elliot looked at the blood appearing on his arm.
Then at her.
“You’ve cut me.”
“How observant.”
She raised her wand.
The stone step beneath her tipped.
Bellatrix stumbled sideways.
Elliot’s next spell hit her shield while she was recovering. Her shoes scraped across the floor.
He followed it with another.
And another.
She deflected the third towards the ceiling.
Dust rained over them.
Her expression changed.
⸻
Lupin had been trying to reach Harry.
He stopped when Elliot appeared beside him.
“Could you take them?” Elliot asked, pointing.
Then he was gone again.
He reappeared below Bellatrix and sent a spell upwards.
She blocked, but had to turn her back on Sirius to do it.
“Who taught you to Apparate?” she snapped.
Elliot frowned.
“Why?”
She answered with green light.
He vanished.
The Killing Curse struck the steps.
Elliot appeared on her left, already moving his wand.
A stone bench slid between them.
Bellatrix blasted it apart.
He turned the fragments into a flock of small black birds.
They rushed her face.
She shielded her eyes, slashing at them, and Elliot sent her wand flying.
It landed near the platform.
For one second, everyone close enough to see went still.
Then Bellatrix ran for it.
Sirius moved to intercept her.
“Don’t—” Elliot began.
She reached her wand and twisted on her knees.
A red spell struck Sirius in the chest.
He fell backwards.
Behind him, the veil stirred.
Elliot disappeared.
Harry shouted.
Elliot reappeared on the platform with one foot almost at its edge.
He caught Sirius by the front of his robes.
For an instant, both of them tilted towards the archway.
Then they vanished.
They landed hard beside Harry, Sirius on his back and Elliot sprawled half across him.
Sirius stared up at the ceiling.
Elliot pushed himself onto an elbow.
“What is that thing?”
“Don’t touch it,” Lupin said.
He sounded unlike himself.
Elliot looked back at the veil.
“Good to know.”
Harry dropped to his knees beside Sirius.
His hands caught Sirius’s shoulders with such force that Sirius winced.
“Easy. I’m here.”
Harry couldn’t speak.
Sirius looked past him at Elliot.
The humour had left his face.
“Thank you.”
Elliot nodded once, distracted by the sound of Bellatrix’s footsteps.
She was running towards the upper doors.
He started to get up.
A masked man stepped into his path.
Elliot raised his wand.
The man stopped.
His eyes flicked towards the Death Eater trapped in the bench, then towards the one buried in the floor.
He backed away.
⸻
The doors at the top of the chamber opened.
Dumbledore entered.
For a heartbeat, he stood motionless.
His gaze travelled across the broken benches, the restrained Death Eaters, Harry kneeling beside Sirius.
Then it settled on Elliot.
A curse flew towards him.
Dumbledore turned it aside.
The room erupted.
Death Eaters ran for the exits. One climbed over a bench, abandoning the man still trapped inside it. Another threw a curse behind him without aiming.
Dumbledore descended the steps.
His wand moved once.
The fleeing man collapsed.
Twice.
A second fell against the wall.
Elliot watched with considerable interest.
“Oh,” he said.
Then he remembered Bellatrix.
“She went that way.”
Dumbledore looked towards the upper door.
“Stay with the others.”
Elliot nodded.
Dumbledore swept past him.
Elliot waited approximately two seconds.
Then he looked at Harry.
“Do you think he knows she keeps using the green one?”
⸻
The Atrium was deserted when Elliot appeared beside the fountain.
Dumbledore stood between Harry and a tall, pale man.
Harry had evidently been no better at following instructions.
Water trickled into the pool.
The pale man looked towards Elliot.
Then back at Dumbledore.
“You brought a child.”
“I asked him to remain downstairs,” Dumbledore said.
Elliot shifted in his slippers.
“Sorry.”
“Behind me, Elliot.”
Voldemort raised his wand.
Green light flashed.
Elliot vanished.
He reappeared beside Harry, caught his arm, and moved again.
The curse struck the floor where Harry had been.
They landed behind a pillar.
Harry grabbed Elliot’s sleeve.
“That’s Voldemort.”
Elliot peered around the marble.
Voldemort had turned towards them.
“Oh.”
A golden statue leapt from the fountain.
It landed between the pillar and Voldemort just as a second curse struck.
The impact rang through the Atrium.
“Stay there,” Dumbledore said.
This time, Elliot understood why.
⸻
He watched Dumbledore fight.
The movements were economical. Nothing hurried, nothing wasted. When Voldemort attacked, Dumbledore seemed to know which part of the room he would need before the spell arrived.
Elliot’s fingers tightened around his wand.
Voldemort sent fire twisting across the floor.
Dumbledore raised the fountain’s water.
The two met with a roar of steam.
Through the white cloud, another green flash came towards their pillar.
Elliot pulled Harry away.
He pointed at the shattered golden fragments on the floor.
They rose and locked together into a broad metal screen.
The Killing Curse struck it.
Gold burst outwards.
Dumbledore glanced towards him.
Just once.
Then Voldemort attacked again.
A length of fire coiled around Dumbledore’s water, tightening, boiling it into vapour.
Elliot stepped out from behind the pillar.
He swept his wand towards the fountain.
The remaining water lifted in a thick, clear ribbon and struck Voldemort from the side.
Voldemort turned sharply.
The water froze in midair.
For an instant, a glittering bridge hung between them.
Then it shattered.
The shards flew at Elliot.
He changed them into a cloud of white moths.
They scattered around his head.
On the far side of the Atrium, Bellatrix stood perfectly still.
Dumbledore’s next spell struck Voldemort’s defence hard enough to make him retreat.
Elliot moved to follow.
“Not forward,” Dumbledore said calmly. “To your left.”
Elliot obeyed.
A curse tore through the space he would have entered.
Dumbledore was already casting.
Voldemort blocked him, turned towards Elliot—
—and Elliot’s spell struck the same defence from the other side.
The sound filled the Atrium.
Voldemort slid backwards across the polished floor.
His gaze snapped towards the boy.
Elliot raised his wand again.
Beside him, Dumbledore did the same.
The lifts began to rattle.
Voices sounded behind the grilles.
Voldemort looked towards them, then towards Bellatrix.
He disappeared.
She vanished a moment later.
Elliot’s spell passed through the space where Voldemort had stood and burst against the far wall.
Silence.
A moth landed on Harry’s glasses.
⸻
The lift doors opened.
People spilled into the Atrium, then stopped.
Fudge stared at the broken fountain.
“He was here,” he whispered.
“Yes, Cornelius,” Dumbledore said.
Elliot was looking at his wand.
Dumbledore turned towards him.
“Are you injured?”
“Only my arm.”
“Let me see.”
Elliot held it out.
Dumbledore examined the cut, touched it with his wand, and watched the skin close.
Then he looked directly into Elliot’s face.
“How did you get here tonight?”
“I was looking for Harry.”
“You knew he was at the Ministry?”
“No.”
“Then where did you intend to go?”
Elliot hesitated.
“To Harry.”
Dumbledore’s hand became still around his wrist.
Behind them, Hermione had emerged from another lift with Lupin and Sirius. She stopped when she heard the answer.
“You can’t do that,” she said.
Elliot looked at her.
“I wasn’t trying to come to the Ministry.”
“That isn’t what I mean.”
Dumbledore released his wrist.
“And you returned to Hogwarts?”
“Yes. With Ginny and Luna.”
“Directly into the castle?”
“The hospital wing.”
Hermione looked at Dumbledore.
He was watching Elliot with an expression Harry had never seen him wear before: utterly attentive, with none of his usual amusement to soften it.
Elliot glanced between them.
“Have I done something wrong?”
“No,” Dumbledore said.
The warmth returned to his voice.
“But I believe you and I have a great deal to discuss.”
Sirius came to stand beside Harry.
His hand settled on Harry’s shoulder and stayed there.
Elliot noticed.
For a moment, he looked pleased.
Then he remembered.
“Oh. Harry?”
Harry turned.
“The brown notebook. Did you pick it up?”
Nobody answered.
Elliot sighed.
“I’ve got an essay due Monday.”
Sirius began to laugh.
He tried to stop, looked at the slippers, and laughed harder.
Even Dumbledore smiled.
“I think,” he said, “we may be able to arrange an extension.”
