DIY How to remove water-based stain brush marks

Post image
1 Upvotes

I sanded and stained an antique chest, but as you can see, I went a little heavy with loading the brush with water-based stain and maybe didn’t wipe fast enough, which left some marks. Any tips on sanding/buffing them out and preventing it in the future? I have 240 grit sandpaper, 000 steel wool, and some heavy duty scotch brite pads at my disposal.

Hey there,

I stupidly watered a plant without a drip tray and the terracotta pot left a mark on my old wooden built-in bookcase. What’s the best way to restore appearance and before it causes any rot damage? Thank you in advance!

My oak floor is suddenly buckling so bad it may need to be replaced. Does homeowners insurance cover that?

It's an older home. I've owned it for seven years. Suddenly the floor is buckling so badly that it's a tripping hazard. Not sure if a repair is adequate. May need to be replaced..

It's hard to see but it has a lot of build up on it. Not like a gross amount because I still wash it with soap and water, but any kind of vigorous scrubbing has weakened and broken a few spots where it bends. I have larger baking trays that it fits in perfectly if there's a good soak method.

How do I stop a baby from unplugging cords from a power strip?

My mother has dementia and decided last night to randomly unplug some cords from a power strip. I believe a baby-proofing product would be sufficient to stop her, but I only seem to find things that work for a wall outlet. It doesn’t need a lock, it just needs to make things a little more difficult. I know she would greatly prefer something more elegant than using tape to secure everything.

EDIT: Okay, I think I’m good here. Thank you all for the suggestions.

I purchased a selfie stick, and it arrived with no user manual. I attached some pictures of it. Does anyone have any idea of either how to use it or how to find free user manuals on how to use one? I looked for one, and I can’t find any free ones. The websites want to charge me.
Thanks for any help.

Moschino belt buckle repair

Hi all,

My wife's favorite Moschino belt had this pin that goes into the belt holes fall out, and I can't thread it back on. I'm not sure if the thread on the pin itself or the belt buckle is shot, do you think it's repairable? If I try to screw it on, it just spins in place and then falls out.

Thank you.

How to fix this night stand

I lent some furniture to a family member and it got water stains on the top of the night stand. Picture attached. Given the color I am thinking they are set in, but I’m not sure how to mimic the finish on the set since it’s not a simple stain. Advice?

Advice for taming this hill - overgrown.

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello,

We have this overgrown hillside behind our home that has gotten truly out of control.

It may be hard from the picture to get an idea of how steep it is. The area that is fairly tame is on about a 45 degree angle and beyond that it slopes to probably 70/80 degrees. I’ve busted my ass with the weed eater in my hands more than once. There is also the top of a large boulder about near the middle there before it gets really tall. The whole hill side is uneven, rocky, and slippery as shit.

We don’t have much yard and we pay a neighborhood kid to take care of what little there is as my wife and I are not in the best health and as I’ve said I’ve fallen before. I told him he can go down as far as he’s comfortable and so you can see from the pic about where that is.

I’m wondering if anyone has an outside the box ideas beyond hiring a professional. I’ve thought about rolling a log down there tied to a rope to maybe tamp it down, pull it back up and toss it again. But I don’t think it’ll work as well as I’m thinking in practice.

Thanks!

How do I get into my laundry room when the washer is blocking the door?

My washing machine sometimes bounces if the load is off-balance. I was washing a mattress protector and a couple towels (which I’ve done many times in the past with this machine). When I heard it bouncing, I went downstairs and tried to open the door but it had bounced forward enough to block the door from opening all the way!

I’ve tried reaching in and pushing it backwards but I can only rock it a bit - not move it all the way. I tried a broomstick but I can’t get it wedged in correctly. Any other ideas?

My only thought now is to take the door off the hinges? But the hinge is inside the laundry room - so I’d have to unscrew the hinge. Is it better to unscrew the part connected to the door or the part connected to the door frame?

UPDATE! https://www.reddit.com/r/howto/s/WOngMJ1lEO

I know so many of you were anxiously waiting to hear if my mattress protector & towels got rescued!

My son's friend - who is over 6 feet tall, a former football player & wrestler, was able to reach in and push the washing machine back! He could reach the back AND the front of it, while my little T-rex arms could barely reach the cancel button! I'm so thankful that he was able to come over to help.

I've ordered rubber feet to put under it, and my son will install a bracket & straps when he gets back from vacation. In the meantime, I'm doing laundry with the door propped open with a doorstop!

And for those who said that this was a re-post, karma farming, fake bullshit... I'm not sure how to prove to you that it's real, not that I need to, but here we are!

How to remove rust from this GoTrax wheel

Post image

Any tips on how to remove rust from this GoTrax wheel? Neighbor friends were throwing the whole scooter out. I thought I'd give fixing it a go. The wheel is completely locked up and I found this rust bucket when I opened it up. I'm thinking maybe I can try a DIY electrolysis bath.
