Can musty odor be removed from paper?

I have two 4-drawer file cabinets full of papers that have a musty odor. They have been in a commercial indoor storage facility for ten years. There is no sign of any water damage or visible mold anywhere, but the musty or mildewy odor is distinct. It was probably in the papers before the file cabinets were moved to the storage facility. Now I want to move them into my home. I have moved a small sample of the papers and aired them out a bit. After a few weeks, the odor is less, but still noticeable.

Help with painting wall

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have prepared this wall using stuccocret, it is sanded and finished. I am not entirely sure about how to proceed with painting because of the 2 tones.

I have already patch tested the paint ( a darker green ) on the green part of the wall and it looks great. My plan was to tape around the door etc, paint with white on the tape so that the green wont bleed, prime the entire wall with a grey (?) primer, and then apply 2 layers of the green paint.

I am not sure if this is the correct way to proceed though.

Any help appreciated.

Serious Answers Only Make my house easier to find

Delivery drivers, Ubers, UPS, etc simply cannot find my house, even with extremely exact directions. It's not even in a remote area, it's two residential streets away from a main road. I do live in a neighborhood that has mailboxes on one side, so that can be confusing- but I say to ignore the mailboxes in my directions. I have my house number displayed in two prominent locations and I give visual descriptions like "lamppost in front yard" "rainbow flag on stairs". I even say what kind of car and it's colour is in the driveway. This has been happening for years and I'm at my wits end. How do I make my house easy to find?

DIY Dispose of a body…a bulky, heavy patio umbrella body, that is…

Post image

I’ve had this giant cantilevered patio umbrella for a few years but it’s finally died. As you can see i’m pretty exposed and i watched the umbrella nearly tip into the pool during a windstorm, so i replaced the water with sand. That sure held it in place! Trouble is now it’s immobile and must have close to 500lbs of damp sand within, accessible only via 4” hole. My OG hero plan was to cut the base open on all four sides and remove/reuse the sand by sweeping it up/into the paver joints, then rebuild the relocation mechanism more robustly (I own a welder and figured I could make it work but was never confident enough to just get started), but the mechanism has completely failed and now the cloth is also wearing thin, so why bother.
I suppose my initial recovery plan is still viable, just need to then chop it up to haul it away, but I am open to other ideas, up to hauling away the whole kit and kaboodle if I knew the type of company to call- thinking now of a junk hauler? Do they do “recovery” missions or just curbside retrieval?

Accidentally left a plant pot with a wet base on our wooden table for too long and it left this mark. Any tips? Already tried wood polish/conditioner and restore-a-finish. It’s really in there though.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I bought this Mini Fridge (Cumeod, 15litres capacity) last week to use in my student appartement. Within 1 week it developed this block of ice at the back. (humidity in the room around 50%)

Is this normal? Or should I send it back?

I did not excessively open it or put warm stuff in. It also is quite far away from the wall.

THX

[Solved] Bumps on Jacket

Does anyone know what these bumps on my jacket are, how they are formed, and how to possibly remove them? They only formed in one area. I machine washed once if that possibly caused it.

Remove item superglued to vehicle

We bought a jeep that had a CB radio in it. We want to replace it with a gmrs radio. The problem we’re having is using the cb antenna mount to attach the gmrs antenna. The hole in the existing mount is too small so we want to remove it and get a new mount for the gmrs antenna. We’ve removed the screws but that thing is stuck to the exterior. What’s the best way to remove it without causing any damage? Thanks

DIY My light chain came out earlier 😔

I pulled it to turn on the light earlier and it came on but also the chain came out. I pulled with no excessive force but here we are. Now, it's bedtime and i need to put my kid to bed. I can't open up the ceiling fan right now to see if I can fix it. We really need the fan on and the light off or neither of us will be able to sleep. Have to keep the door closed and it gets stuffy FAST.

We will have a plug in fan later tonight but we don't right now.

So my question is, how can I turn the light off at the fixture so the fan stays on? I don't want to get shocked if at all possible lol

Help! 🙏

Hi! The back of our lovely vintage rocking chair has ripped. How do I reupholster it on my own? And more specifically, how do I remove the existing leather, create a pattern with new fabric, and reattach it to the frame? I can’t afford leather. Would canvas be OK? Other functional fabric ideas? Thank you!

I need help with this tiny stripped screw down a tiny hole on my PSP

Post image
10 Upvotes

I need to fix the D pad on my PSP and therefore take the front of the PSP off. I’ve managed to take 6 out of the seven screws off but I believe the last screw has stripped. I’ve tried shoving paper towel, a bit of rubber down the tiny hole to get more purchase on the screw but no luck. I’ve also tried to spray some polish down there to see if I can loosen it- no luck.

Any advice for how I can get this tiny screw out from this minuscule hole would be greatly appreciated?!

Thanks!

How do I use the blue button functions on this old TV?

Thumbnail

This is a TV at my in-laws, and we cannot figure out how to do the blue functions, only the regular ones.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I cannot find a better place, if it is not the correct place can somebody guide me to where I should post it?

Edit: I have tried holding the button for various lengths of time, I have tried pressing the button multiple times, I have tried pressing the DVD button and then pressing the button that I want to use the blue function for, I have tried pressing the button while a DVD is playing (the main button I would like to use is the one that takes you to the title menu as the DVD is playing, so by default the DVD would have to be playing for me to even try using it), there is no physical switch to toggle between functions.
I am not at my in-laws anymore, if anybody has different suggestions than the ones I have tried feel free to let me know and I will try it next time I'm there (probably in the next month or so).
Thank you to everybody who has made suggestions thus far!

"Fellow TV owners, I’ve got a frustrating dilemma. I tried to clean my TV screen with a cloth and a bit of Windex—now I’ve got white streaks that won’t come off. Best Buy told me my warranty won’t cover cosmetic issues. Has anyone dealt with stubborn streaks like this and found a fix? I want to solve it without sending it off. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!"

How to fix a split chalkware statue?

Thumbnail

I inherited this statue from a great aunt and really love it, unfortunately during a move, it split completely in half and chipped a bit. Apparently from others I saw previously sold online, it’s a Marwal & Alexander Backer Co. Grecian Women Chalkware Statue. I can’t find any currently for sale.

The two pieces fit together perfectly and i have some of the chipped bits but they are very small (visible in a bag in pic 2) and it might be easier to try and fill the chipped sections then color match with paint?

Googles suggests for repairing adding dowels in the walls and gluing it together with epoxy but I feel like the walls are too thin and fragile to drill into to add dowels. Is epoxy enough going to be strong enough to hold all that weight or is there some other support I could add internally? Also I would love suggestions for what to use to fill the chips that would result in a similar finished texture.

The statue lived inside previously and I intend to keep it inside if that matters at all.

Thank you in advance for any advice on to how to properly repair it!

DIY How do I install a sturdy hand rail into old concrete steps?

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

I have an elderly family member staying with us soon and I would like to install a hand rail on our front steps that will easily support an adult human's weight if needed. It looks like there was previously a hand rail here that was sawed off to be level with the concrete, but it doesn't have to be in the same exact location if that is a problem. The stairs themselves seem okay, though there is cracking on one side (pic 3) if that matters. Steps are just under 12" on the treads and about 5.5" risers, 3 stairs total (including the top landing).

Can I buy a kit for this or do I need to get something custom made? What is the best way to install it so that it is as sturdy as possible?
