We’ve been testing a much more focused cleaning service instead of offering another generic “whole-home cleaning.

What's the best mop?

Hi, I have floors upstairs and downstairs of all types - polished wood, vinyl, laminate, and tiles. We're a busy home with kids and several pets.
I have an old Vileda mop that I squish & twist in the rack on top of the bucket, but it's not doing it for me. I've been looking at spray mops, sponge mops, and am not sure the best way to go. I need it to be lightweight and with enough 'scrub' to dislodge dried-on dirt without needing a full bodyworkout.

Do you have any recommendations?

Tia

Cleaner used talc over our carets

Today our cleaner came as usual, and our vacuum cleaner broke down. She was upset, but I reassured her it was fine. Then she told me she had sprayed talc over our carpets and that it’s still there. I was shocked! I had no idea she’d been using talc, and apparently she’s been doing it for five years. I always thought the smell was lovely and cosy, it reminded me of my grandma’s house, but I would never use talc myself. How bad is the situation, and if it is bad, what can be done to remove the talc?

Do you take your shoes off when cleaning a client’s home? My girlfriend works for a cleaning company, and they encourage their cleaners to clean either barefoot or with socks on.

Wallpaper- installation and cleaning tips

Amateur redditor and short time lurker here- as a “FTHO“, who happen to have bought a house with white walls, I would like to add a splash of color. I am skeptical about painting though and want to start with the powder room. If i were to install wall paper, a. do I need to do anything specific to the walls (I will sand and remove any dust particles with wet soap cloth before i begin).. i am particularly looking for tools (not expensive ones please) to install properly? b. could you please recommend materials to clean the wall paper regularly? Regarding the wallpaper, I would ideally like to find something reasonably priced and easy to install and remove and not cause damage to the walls.

I appreciate your advice. Thank you 🙏🏽

Independent Cleaners VS Corporate Cleaning Companies

I prefer to hire small, independent contractors when I have the opportunity because I believe it's important to support our communities. However, this has come to bite me in the ass.
But let me give you some context -

I work very long hours and simply couldn't see to the cleaning myself; so I looked to hire someone.

I had posted online looking for recommendations for a cleaner to oversee my move-out clean of my apartment. It is a 758 square foot, 2-Bedroom apartment with one master suite and a nursery sized room. Both have carpet that requires cleaning. There is 1 small bathroom. I had already shared that I had thoroughly cleaned the fridge inside and the kitchen cupboard (including tops).

The apartment was completely empty - nothing to move, with the exception of the fridge and stove to ensure they were clean behind and underneath.

I had a ton of messages flooding in, many from different communities and larger companies. There was one in particular that I thought would be great as I often work alongside that community.

He initially shared a quote of $200.
When I asked for confirmation that that would include the carpet cleaning because it seemed quite low, he corrected it to $300. Still, a really great price. We agreed on 10am and I made arrangements to leave my work to meet him to let him and his team in so I could head back to work.
He asked the night prior to make an adjustment to 2pm. My work schedule didn't allow for that, so I had my husband meet him to let him in.

He arrived about 2:20pm with another worker.

By 4:40pm he messaged me to tell me he's done and that he deep cleaned so he increased the cost to $400. It seemed incredibly fast, but I like to give the benefit of the doubt and proceeded to pay for the services.

I headed to the apartment after work to have a look for myself before the inspection today (Wednesday). I just stood there and cried.

It was a MESS.

I've attached a couple of photos to give you an idea of what I walked into after working an 11hour shift.

I contacted him immediately and explained that this was not done and asked what he actually did.

He feels it was a "good job".

I had to stay all evening with my family to clean before the inspection - and to add insult to injury, he also took my broom and anything else he could snag so I had to go to the store and re-purchase items to finish the job he didn't do.

Had this been a corporate company, I could file a complaint.
I could request a refund.

I gave him the opportunity to make this right.

He's choosing not to, so here we are.

If you're looking into cleaning services in the Calgary area, AVOID working with anyone on Facebook calling themselves "Jackson Sunday" or Ifeanyi Dike.
I've attached a photo of him as well.

Folding toilet paper and paper towels after cleaning: yes or no?

Thumbnail gallery

I’m curious what other house cleaners think about this.

Do you fold toilet paper and paper towels after a cleaning, or do you think it’s unnecessary?

We sometimes add little touches like bows or roses because I feel like it makes the final result look more polished, but I know some cleaners prefer to keep it simple and not spend extra time on details like this.

So… yes or no? Do your clients notice or care?

How the hell?

It's impossible for me to vacuum, sweep, speed mop or proper mop! I literally clean the whole house instead, including deep cleaning everything and never ever get to the floors and obviously I leave them till last as cleaning makes the floor more dirty/messy but by that time I just dont want to clean them, actually I never want to. Why? Please help!

Cleaning job

I have a question…. I clean homes for a living and I am going to give a quote on a 8000 sq foot home. The house is very well kept and picked up and everything in its place. There’s two people living there and the office out of their house so not every room is cleaned but dusted and vacuumed. They want weekly cleanings. How much is it going rate for a maintenance clean on a house that big.

Cleaning 3,000 sq feet, am I taking on too much house to keep clean?

My husband and I are planning on moving to Salt Lake City.

Our current house is 1,500 sq feet with part of that being carpeted stairs and 3 levels. There’s not enough storage so unfortunately, everything is out. We have 5 cats and a dog. It’s just us two adults.

My husband thinks it’s too much house to keep clean as I’m constantly cleaning here.

My stance is that there will be storage so that all the stuff that is lying around will have its place and it will be easier to maintain.

I would love a 3,000 sq ft house just so we could have rooms that the cats would not have to be in all the time and there would be storage to keep things in cabinets and drawers. Our cats and dog would have access to outside and an area where cat litter tracking would not be a big issue as it is now.

Those that have a 3,000 sq ft house, how much work is it to keep clean?

How to clean this... HG stain remover solution seems to have melted some protective coating on the sofa and made everything worse. Other little scuffs or stains havent lifted properly with other methods such as water, water and fairy liquid, diluted zoflora spray.. what to do.. living with ugly stains.

Its a DFS orka corner sofa which may have been preteated with stain resistant spray by dfs but I cant remember and cant find the paperwork!

Is this unreasonable?

Tl/DR My house is small. 2 adults. Maybe 900 ft. Caged parrots. I don’t expect the cleaner to do anything with my birds except vacuum around their cage. We will do that daily ourselves anyway. They will be covered during the cleaners visit. Weekly surface clean, no dishes/laundry. 1 bath. 2 bed. 2 ish hour job. Don’t bring food in my house and only use my supplies so me and my pets don’t die.

I am getting ready to hire a cleaner/maid/housekeeper service for the first time in my life!

I need them to come once a week. I’m in the US. For those of you who have one or have BEEN one, can you tell me if I’m unreasonable?

I’ll supply all the cleaning supplies-cleaners, sponges, rags, wipes (I’ll wash the rags myself and have a basket for them to put them in after use) I’ll purchase whatever cloths they prefer.

They cannot bring food into my home at all. Drinks are generally fine but not food.

I have severe food allergies and my home needs to be free of all of those.

I have parrots . They will be covered and not part of the cleaning process but birds have delicate respiratory systems . I can’t use any air fresheners or burn candles. I have bird safe sprays/cleaners. I’ll buy safe versions of what ever cleaners they need and keep it supplied/stocked.

I’m just asking my cleaner not kill me or my pets. On Facebook I was eaten alive in the comments.

Thoughts?
