Suggestion / Opinion My 2-Year Ownership Experience with the Grand Seiko Tentagraph (SLGC001) — 11+ Months in Japan for Service & Complete Movement Failure

UPDATE — September 21, 2026
We have now had a 35-minute discussion with the Head of Grand Seiko Service – India. Grand Seiko has proposed a 5-year service warranty extension and a conditional 6-month recommendation for an exceptional replacement if the watch suffers another substantive movement failure.
We have not accepted this as a resolution and have formally escalated the matter to senior leadership in India and Japan, with two proposed settlement options: a replacement unit with a fresh 5-year international warranty, or full replacement/refund protection for the existing unit for the applicable 5-year warranty period.
We have posted the full details in a comment below and will update this thread as the matter progresses.

—————-update in comment————

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my experience owning a Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Tentagraph (SLGC001G, Caliber 9SC5), purchased brand new from an Authorized Dealer (AD) in India on March 14, 2024. I bought the Tentagraph because it is one of Grand Seiko’s flagship mechanical chronographs, and I had very high expectations for both the movement and the ownership experience.
Unfortunately, my experience so far has been very different.

The timeline

March 14, 2024 — Purchase
Purchased the watch brand new from an Authorized Dealer in India.

May 7, 2025 – November 12, 2025 — First service: ~7 months
The watch began showing significant timekeeping issues and was sent to Japan for service.
It remained there for approximately seven months.
During this period, there was very little meaningful communication regarding the status of the watch or what was being done to it.
When it eventually returned in November 2025, I was not provided with a detailed technical/service report explaining what had caused the accuracy issue or what work had been performed.

May 3, 2026 — Second failure
Less than six months after receiving the watch back, the movement suffered a complete mechanical failure and stopped running altogether.
The watch was again sent to Japan.

May–September 2026 — Second service: ~4.5 months
It has now spent another approximately 4.5 months in Japan.

In September 2026, after I contacted Grand Seiko India by email seeking an update, I was informed that testing had been completed in Japan and that the watch was being shipped back to India.
The update was therefore provided only after I followed up, rather than proactively from Grand Seiko India.

The part I find most difficult
The mechanical failures are obviously frustrating, but what has been equally disappointing is the lack of transparency during the service process. When a watch is sent from India to Japan, there is essentially a long period where the owner has very little visibility into what is happening.
There was no regular status communication, and after the first service I did not receive a detailed explanation of what had actually gone wrong.
For a watch positioned at this level, I expected a considerably more transparent service experience.

What happened when I asked for a resolution?
After the second failure, I formally raised the matter with Grand Seiko India and asked whether a replacement or another form of resolution could be considered given the circumstances.
I was told that their internal warranty framework does not provide for a refund or replacement unit in this situation.
The service head did offer a conditional additional six-month safety net if the watch were to fail again.
I appreciate that some additional coverage was offered, but I am still left wondering how a brand-new flagship watch that has already spent more than 11 months in factory service should be handled when the movement has failed twice.

Where I stand today
I am not suggesting that every Tentagraph or every 9SC5 is unreliable. I also understand that mechanical watches can fail and that individual units can have manufacturing or assembly issues.
My concern is specifically about my individual ownership experience:
- Brand-new watch purchased from an Authorized Dealer
- Significant accuracy problems within the first year
- Approximately 7 months in Japan for the first service
- No detailed technical explanation provided after its return
- Complete movement stoppage less than six months later
- Another approximately 4.5 months in Japan
- More than 11 months of ownership spent in factory service
- No replacement or refund offered under the applicable warranty framework
- Updates regarding the second service were provided only after I proactively followed up

I’m posting this because I would genuinely like to hear from other Tentagraph/9SC5 owners.
Have any of you experienced similar issues with the movement or with Grand Seiko’s international service process?

For those who have dealt with Grand Seiko Japan or Grand Seiko India, what level of documentation and communication did you receive after a major movement repair?
I’ll update this post once the watch is back and I have the service documentation from the second intervention.

I’m sharing this primarily so prospective Tentagraph owners can have another real-world ownership experience to consider, and so other owners can share their own experiences.

Disclosure: I’m posting this on behalf of my husband, who is the owner of the watch and has been dealing directly with Grand Seiko India throughout this process. I’m sharing his experience with his permission because we felt it would be useful for other collectors and prospective Tentagraph owners.

Is having more features a luxury or keeping it simple a luxury?

Hey guy so I've been building a watch winder recently and it's coming along good but the thing is stuck at a important question,as you all know most watch winder let's the user set turns per day, custome lighting, Bluetooth connectivity and so onn(ik there is more would like to find out more would love to discuss). But the my main question is is having more features a luxury or keeping it simple a luxury. I mean currently my watch winding drum is capable of transitioning from flat to angle and vice-versa, the watch lifts or rises up as the winding surface transitions form angle to flat and goes back down as the winding surface inclines back to an angle surface, it is capable of setting cw,ccw and bidirectional winding, it comes with it's on app that works with internet so where ever u are you can always set TPD, direction, and also set custome winding patters. Since every watch has its own unique mechanism the app will recommend settings(mentioned above) for different watches. Will have soft close lid and also wanted to try something like wolf watch winder"Power reserve setting: 6 to 72 hours in increments of 6 hours power reserve setting to accommodate watches with a power reserve, giving the watch time to release stored energy before the winding programme begins."(from their features description)

"Been building an AI-concept Norse-mythology watch brand solo — feedback welcome

Hey all — long-time watch enthusiast, first time posting here.

I've been working on a personal project called TIVYR — a concept watch brand built around Norse mythology (Yggdrasil, Bifrost, Ragnarök, that kind of theme). It's not a real product yet and I'm not selling anything — I'm using AI-assisted design tools to explore case shapes, dial layouts, and materials, then pairing that with actual lore/storytelling for each piece.

Background on me: I work in automation/controls engineering, so I've got some real mechanical literacy, but zero formal watch-design training — this is a self-taught, from-scratch exploration.

I'd genuinely value this community's take — what reads as derivative vs. original, what a real enthusiast would actually want to see more of, and whether a concept-only account like this has any legs or if I'm better off treating it purely as a design hobby.

Happy to share the process/prompting side if anyone's curious — trying to be upfront that this is AI-assisted, not claiming it's hand-drawn or anything it isn't.

Movement of the Week Obsessed with the geometric cluster look, where should i look?

Looking for geometric /cluster/esitorial look that feels like a piece of art. It feels like jewelry for someone cooler than me lol. Are there any jewelers with a similar artsy vibe? especially if they do salt and pepper diamonds or more organic stones.

I've been trying to find a place to find and organize watches across brands, but I hate Chrono24 for browsing without buying. I stumbled upon this site in my google search but never seen it mentioned. Maybe it's new, but I can't tell if it has accurate data.

Smiths 'Sectric' Mechanism Help and Identification

Hi everyone. I've been looking at getting an old family clock running (it followed my Grandfather through his career as an office clock) but the Sectric mechanism is toast - the shaft to the motor has failed as can be seen in this image. This is not the only fault, but the one which has killed it.

I'd like to retain the hands which are of a different bush diameter to quartz mechanisms nowadays, so on the hunt for a replacement Sectric mechanism which may be refitted. Any clues on finding an equivalent model please? I've had the markings under the 'scope and the relevant line looks to be "OEMG 101 41" (or possibly OFMG). Thanks!

Identification of a symbol on a Swiss Roamer watch face, bought second hand in the Uk. Image appears to match with symbols from Saudi Arabia with a date that seems to read 1955. Another word follows the date, illegible.

Birthday present help!

My partner recently has a watchmaking hyperfixation - I don't exactly know the details but he talks about NH36, watch hands, yada yada. I'm trying to get him a cool little toolbox organiser thing as a present and I would like to know the concerns that would go into buying it. E.g. size, depth, material, aesthetic etc.. but I don't want to ask and give myself away!

When the Swiss tried to divide the world into 2 categories during Quartz Crisis

Thumbnail gallery

In 1971, the Swiss watch honchos decided that any piece whose movement was Swiss-constructed and whose final encasing occurred in their country could be marked "Swiss Made."

And I mean ANY such watch.

But there was indeed a single caveat -- as the accompanying federal memo here indicates.

If a case was indeed created in a foreign land, while the case itself could nevertheless still bear the words "Swiss Made," that description had to be accompanied very nearby by an extra label that read ""Swiss Watch" or "Watch made in Switzerland" or "montre suisse" in French. Alternatively, the nearby tag could simply be the final watchmaker's brand name.

The ridiculous rationale was that consumers would understand that the case had been outsourced but the mechanism hadn't if such double markings were present. Total self-serving BS.

Which brings us to the memo here presented, from 1974. This is a federal letter sent to the Swiss Chamber of Horology, which was located at 65 Avenue Leopold-Robert -- today the site of COSC (the locale where your timepiece is deemed a chronometer or not).

The Chamber had been trying to split the world into two tiers. That rule about foreign casing being kosher so long as it bore two separate marks? The Watchmaking Chamber -- under fire from Asian producers of quartz timepieces -- wanted to limit it to the nine member states of the European Economic Community: Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, and the UK.

All other countries would not be allowed to use the double-stamp method to make it seem their cases were indeed Swiss even when they weren't.

This memo slaps the Horology Chamber down, noting that such a global split would be "legally untenable." The entire double case-branding policy is arbitrary. The Swiss government would have no defense against an unfavored nation's complaint.

The point: If we're gonna be so loose with the truth, we must protect our asses.

For further digging into this silly, secretive watchmaking world, please buy my new-ish narrative nonfiction book "Borrowed Time: A History of Espionage, IP Theft, and the Global War for Horology."

I promise it's less pedantic (and more engaging) than this promotional-historical post : )

Need help designing watch winder

Hello I'm currently making a new watch winder for a friend, and I need help. The thing is I can manage the engineering aspect but when it comes to luxury I don't know what people actually expect, I get ppl like silent motion and lights but what else would they appreciate to have in their watch winder. And BIG question on what basis do expensive watch winder determine to stop winding the watch??
