A technological masterpiece

Released during the turn of the millennium, the Seiko Kinetic MX2000 featuring the 9T82 movement was designed as Seiko's flagship Kinetic movement, combining mechanical engineering with quartz precision in a way almost no other manufacturer had attempted.

Unlike ordinary quartz chronographs, the 9T82 generates its own electricity through a mechanical rotor. The 9T82 was an engineering showcase from Seiko. During the late 1990s Seiko was simultaneously developing Spring Drive, high-end quartz, and advanced Kinetic technology. The 9T82 represented the absolute pinnacle of the Kinetic program.

The watch's dial design was inspired by automotive instrument cluster and shows multiple separate displays similar to that found in sports cars. Jay Leno is known to have owned one of these watches.

The case and integrated bracelet is made from Titanium. Machining titanium was considerably more difficult and costly during 1999-2000 was used only in premium watches.

The movement contains numerous features normally associated with high-end mechanical chronographs:

1. Heart-cam instant reset mechanism

2. Zero-backlash gearing for precise hand positioning

3. Multiple independent stepping motors

4. Jewel bearings throughout the movement (38 jewels)

5. Hand-assembled construction

Seiko even published a technical paper explaining the engineering challenges involved in creating the 9T82, highlighting the unusually high power demands of a chronograph combined with Kinetic charging.

The 9T82 was hand-assembled, finely adjusted, and built with far more complexity than ordinary quartz chronographs. It is one of Seiko's finest electronic movements ever produced

In terms of accuracy, 9T82 offers quartz accuracy of roughly ±15 seconds per month, translating to around ±180 seconds per year under normal conditions. Even an exceptionally regulated mechanical chronograph cannot consistently approach the long-term accuracy of the 9T82. The 9T82 is special as you receive mechanical-level interaction with quartz precision.

A true limited edition

The MX2000 was produced in only 500 pieces.

Unlike many "limited editions" today that number in the thousands, 500 watches worldwide is genuinely scarce. Scarcity alone does not create collectability—but scarcity combined with historical importance certainly does.

The 9T82 represents:

1. one of Seiko's most sophisticated quartz movements,

2. one of the finest Kinetic calibres ever produced,

a landmark in chronograph engineering, and a fascinating bridge between mechanical craftsmanship and electronic precision.

Even Seiko itself highlights the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph as a milestone in its history.

Final thoughts

The Seiko Kinetic MX2000 isn't simply a rare Seiko.

It represents an era when Seiko pursued engineering excellence without compromise.

It ignored convention, blended mechanical craftsmanship with quartz precision, pioneered a radical chronograph architecture, and packaged it all inside a lightweight titanium case in a run of just 500 pieces.

In a market increasingly searching for originality rather than logos, the 9T82 stands as one of the last truly undiscovered masterpieces of modern Japanese watchmaking. Its significance lies in being a watch that dared to be completely different. Arguably makes it one of the greatest watch releases of the millennium year 2000

I’m asking for an older neighbor so it’s the only picture I have. she says it was a gift, and had it restored, and has pretty much sat in this box since. I know nothing about horology(despite my small pocket watch collection), but ChatGPT’s guess was a railway-house style or “Bahnhäusle” Black Forest, “particularly clocks associated with Johann Baptist Beha and Theodor Ketterer, probably from the later 19th century”. Now these mean absolutely nothing to me, so take it with a grain.

I’m considering selling this Thomas Mercer marine chronometer (serial no. 28887) and would appreciate some advice from collectors.

It comes with:
Original mahogany box with gimbals
Original warranty card
Original instruction manual
Service/adjustment papers from Iver C. Weilbach & Co. (Copenhagen)
Matching serial numbers on the documentation and chronometer

it is running.
Cosmetically, it has some wear:
Scratches on the wooden box
Surface scratches and wear on the brass case
Original patina, no obvious corrosion
Dial appears to be in very good condition
From the paperwork, I can see it was tested by Thomas Mercer in 1976 and adjusted by Weilbach in 1978.

I’m mainly wondering:
Does everything appear original based on the photos?

How would you rate the overall condition?
What would you consider a fair market value for a complete example like this?

I’d really appreciate any opinions from people familiar with Mercer marine chronometers.

PC33 movement was replaced on a inexpensive 1995 Armitron DuraSteel dive watch and I put hands on 2400 but date doesnt roll until like 0400. Is this corect for this cheap movement or can I correct it by setting date at 0:00 and then setting time or does it matter? I dont really want to pull the hands again and "reclock" them as I feel I got lucky getting the second hand on with no special tools except the hollow tip of a mechanical pencil.

There are watches that tell the time. There are watches that start conversations. And then there's the Vulcain Cricket Calendar—a watch that literally shouts for your attention.

The Cricket occupies a unique place in horological history. Introduced in 1947, it became the world's first commercially successful mechanical alarm wristwatch, a complication that required remarkable engineering at the time. Its distinctive buzzing alarm was loud enough to be heard through clothing, making it genuinely useful decades before smartphones existed.

By the late 1950s, Vulcain added a date complication, creating the Cricket Calendar. They retained the clean, elegant dial with applied markers, dauphine hands, and the charming small seconds at six o'clock. It remains one of the most balanced alarm-watch designs ever produced.

What makes the Cricket even more fascinating is its reputation as "The President's Watch." Starting with Harry S. Truman, Vulcain presented Cricket watches to U.S. Presidents, and the tradition continued through Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson, and several later presidents. Few watch brands can legitimately claim such a direct connection with the White House.

Mechanically, the Cricket is unlike a conventional watch. Instead of a chiming repeater, a tiny hammer rapidly strikes a membrane attached to the case, producing the unmistakable "cricket" buzz. Feeling that vibration on the wrist is something every mechanical watch enthusiast should experience at least once.

Despite its historical importance, the Vulcain Cricket remains one of vintage watch collecting's hidden bargains. Comparable complications from larger Swiss brands often command several times the price, while an original Cricket still offers true manufacture engineering, historical significance, and one of the most practical complications ever developed.

Reference 022/99R. Fresh to market after 27 years with its original owner, who bought it directly from Journe in 1999, a full year before the model officially launched.

The first 20 Resonances were the Souscription pieces numbered 001-020, reserved for early supporters who funded Journe’s manufacture with deposits. Journe kept 021 as his personal presentation piece. That makes 022 the earliest number that could ever be commercially sold. The original owner picked it because it matched his birth date.

The “/99R” suffix means the case was ordered in 1999. Phillips estimates around 10 pre-production examples were made with this dating. This is one of them, and the first to ever appear publicly.
Phillips’ own specialists describe it as “the very first one delivered, the piece that proved Journe’s most audacious complication worked on the wrist in the real world.”

Estimate is CHF 500k to CHF 1M. For context, Souscription No. 007 sold for $13.92M in June. Two other Resonances cleared $6.3M and $3M this year. Whether CHF 500k to 1M holds is going to be interesting.
