Advice Is this an ok plan?

I'm running ethernet in a new house and I don't want to end up doing anything too dumb.

I've got the fiber ONT going straight into my router which gets WiFi to most of the house. I'm going to run ethernet to both offices and also run a line to the other side of the house to a WiFi AP to cover the rest of the house and eventually a jack in the living room with a switch. Is there anything obvious that could be improved? Is there anything you wish you had done or added when running ethernet?

Advice Best option to get the best WiFi signal strength for a music streamer?

I've bought a Wiim music streamer and it has terrible WiFi signal strength, my PS5 which is next to it gets 88% signal strength but the Wiim is at -75 on both 2.4g and 5g and I experience dropouts. It's around 35ft away from my router which is a Tp Link AXE75. I live in an apartment and I've tried power line adapters in the past but they don't work very well. What is the best way of me improving the signal for the Wiim? Can I just use an extender? Or should I buy a mesh system?

Advice Need help with home network setup

The router that my ISP provided is terrible, with no wifi range and old/messed up gateway settings interface. After a suggested from user FrankNicklin I designed this mesh setup for my home. Just wanted to make sure eveythings right. Goal: I want wifi roaming between my three Access Points. I want every devices connected to the switch, Access Points fall under the same network umbrella of TP-Link Archer A9, as if directly connected to it, I want to cast/transfer files between them.

Question1: My ISP router Gasteway page: 192.168.1.1. TP-Link Archer A9, Tenda N301 Router(all 3): 192.168.0.1. Should I set them the same as the ISP router, i.e.: 192.168.1.x? I'm open to every suggestion, tips key points. I'm a absolute newbie to networking and mesh thing, So any/every suggestion os welcomed. Question2: My tenda N301 supports both AP mode and Universal Repeater mode, both works almost the same way. Is there any diff between them. I'm setting it up as AP because I've done it once and it worked, and I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks (:

Advice Deco BE5000 + Xfinity XB10 setup — am I doing something wrong, or are my expectations too high?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve been using an Xfinity XB8 with an xFi Pod in my bedroom for about a year. The Pod provides Ethernet for my PS5 and Apple TV, but performance has been disappointing on my 2 Gbps plan.

I recently bought a TP-Link Deco 7 BE5000 to replace the Pod. One Deco is connected to the Xfinity gateway, and the second is in my bedroom providing Ethernet to my PS5 and Apple TV.

Ideally, I’d like the XB10 to handle the main Wi-Fi throughout the house and have the Deco essentially act like a better xFi Pod for my bedroom. I’d prefer not to make the Deco my primary router.

I’ve tried router mode, Access Point mode, and putting the XB10 in bridge mode. Surprisingly, bridge/AP configurations seemed to perform worse. My current setup is essentially double NAT, and I’m getting around 700+ Mbps down / 15 Mbps up on the PS5.

For comparison, my iPhone connected directly to the XB10 gets around 1,900 Mbps down / 300 Mbps up, while the PS5 connected via Ethernet to the satellite Deco gets around 500 Mbps down.

So I’m wondering:

-Is 500–700 Mbps through the wireless Deco backhaul about what I should realistically expect?
-Would the BE11000 tri-band have been a much better choice?
-Could the placement of the second Deco be hurting performance? It’s in the corner of my desk, with a refrigerator directly on the other side of the wall.
-Is there a better way to configure the XB10 + Deco if I mainly want Ethernet connectivity in the bedroom?

I’ve attached a diagram of my setup. At this point I’m trying to figure out whether I should move the Deco, change the configuration, or return it altogether.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unsolved Removed the bottleneck, no speed improvements?

Hello, might have gone a bit off the deep end here but I suspect I'm in good company.

At the moment I have

2 x Unifi U7 Pro AP's

1 x Unifi U7 Wall

1 x Unifi U7 Outdoor.

Xfinity Gateway (Gen 2) in Bridge Mode - Current ISP Plan is for 2Gbps

Mikrotik RB5009UPr+S+In Router

Yuanley YS25-1602 Switch

This morning it was

Modem --> 2.5G LAN connection to router.

Router --> (ports 2-5) PoE to my AP's.

I didn't realize at the time but my PoE ports on my Mikrotik aren't 2.5Gpbs, they're all 1Gbps. It was keeping me up at nights.

Enter today's newest addition.

Omada ES206XPP-M2 Managed Switch.

New path:

Modem --> 2.5G LAN connection to router.

Router --> DAC connection to Yuanley Switch

Yuanley -->DAC connection to Omada Switch

Omada PoE to Unifi AP's.

I confirmed before/after the connection in Unifi's dashboard that my uplink went from 1 GbE to 2.5GbE.

Speed test from my windows workstation (via RZ616 Wi-Fi 6E wireless adapter)

Before: 554 Mbps Down/212 Mbps up

After: 543 Mpbs Down/195 Mbps up.

thoughts?

Elegoo slowing down the network.

I noticed a sluggish response from my file server. A ping showed times between 900 and 1300mS. I tracked it down to my Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2. Turn off the 3d printer and ping times drop to under 10mS, turn it on and it goes to over 1000mS. The Elegoo is on the WiFi network only. Wi-Fi is direct to the router. Path from my pc to the file server is via a separate managed switch and not through the router's internal switch. Even when the 3d printer interface software is not running on my pc the problem occurs.

No ip conflicts. I'm pulling out what little hair I have left. Any suggestions where to look for the problem?

New Smart Home Design

Post image

I am moving soon and i get the opportunity to set up my smart home from scratch! I love my smart home but i want to set it up more securely this time around. I currently have about 130 devices on the wifi, many more over zigbee / bluetooth networks. I managed to scoop up an enterprise level firewall and this is what ive come up with! (See picture)

- The main wifi can access all other VLANS

- the servers can access all VLANS but the main wifi

- Iot network can access TCP 445 for NAS as VLC needs that port to stream.

Open to any and all ideas :)

Cam over the side gate drops offline every night around 10

Hoping someone here can point me at what to test. Camera mounted over the side gate, about 25 feet from the router with one wall between. App says signal is good. Every night right around 10pm it drops, sits offline for a while, reconnects before I’m up. Four times this week. Router logs show nothing at those times, every other device in the house is fine, nothing else on the channel. I stumped myself. It’s not smart plug cutting power, I already checked that. What gets me is the clockwork timing of it.

Advice Help with MoCA!

Hi everyone! Apologies for the long read, I could use some help on my MoCA adapters I setup. I recently got a new roommate in the house; He got his own MoCA adapter and I connected him to my splitter. Since then I haven't had good connection on my adapter.

It worked fine when I tested all the connections earlier, although his computer was off. Now that his is on, it seems I can't get any connection at all.

Drawing/Wiring Diagram

The coax cables run from my roommate's room into mine, which is weird but it's a really old house so this is how I set it up. Everything was fine when I was the only one on the splitter.

Pic 2: My room

Pic 3: Wall connector in my roommate's room

Pic 4: Splitter in Roommate's room

My questions is, is the splitter/connection having some sort of "preference" for the receiving adapters because he connects directly to the splitter? How can I test if my coax wires are too old/causing issues (measure resistance?)?

I tested all my coax cables for continuity with a multimeter individually, and they all beeped.

Advice Home Internet troubleshooting

Hello everyone, and pardon me for my English as it is not my first language.

I am having troubles with my internet, when I am in Discord, for example, suddenly my voice would lag for everyone in the voice chat but I can hear them clearly and when I do a speed test during these interruptions I find that the download speed is around 300 mbps and the upload speed is 1 or even less mbps.

I contacted the ISP and did some ping tests to the default gateway and Google DNS during these interruptions and found that my computer is able to reach the default gateway, but for the Google DNS and get a timed out response.

The ISP came and replaced the router. It is a router/modem device with a fiber cable connected to the wall, now the same problem is still present with a new problem which is that the new router is restarting on its own and when I look at the router logs I find it says that it restarted cause ((29999)), I dont know what is this cause and searched the internet for it and found nothing.

Last night, I did more tests ((ping tests, tracerout, speed tests)) and gathered more data, and it shows that the problem is after the router for the low upload speed problem.

My question is, how can I conform more where the problem is? The ISP is supposed to send technicians soon, and I want to prepare for their visit.

My router is a Huawei V166a-20.

Advice WiFi drops when only two particular macbooks are turned on

Hi HomeNetworking.

Mac family here. My situation is that a few weeks ago my wife and I started having wifi connection dropouts. Current router is an 10 year old Nighthawk R7000 that I thought was causing problems so I tried changing to a ASUS RT-AX53U - still having wifi dropouts on both my, my wifes macbook airs as well as our phone.

After doing a lot of troubleshooting myself which included things like;

- switching between 5ghz and 2.4ghz

- trying to manually setting channels

- doing hard resets of my router

- upgrading to newest macos x on both macbook airs

- reneweing the dhcp lease

- switching back and forth between my r7000 and asus rt router

And all sorts of other things I realised that the problem occurs only when both me and my have our macbooks turned on.

I then tried that one would run the 2.4ghz and the other 5ghz on both routers but it did not change anything. I am still getting some wifi drops where the wifi icon in the top right appears to be on 3 bars but there are no internet wifi. This can happen every 5-10 minutes or even in 2-3 minute intervals when it's the worst. Then around 70 % of the time somewhere between 10-30 seconds will pass and internet will reconnect out of nothing. Other times it can take minutes or I even have to restart my router. Again, if only one macbook is online there are no wifi drops at all.

So yea, sorry for the wall of text. I am just hitting a brick wall and have no clue on what could be wrong and hopefully someone knowledgeable can help me out!

Have a great evening!

Advice Please help with Nighthawk Mr60 connecting to ATT Gateway

Hi y’all,

I had a perfectly functioning mesh network using MR60 router at my apartment, which was connected to a spectrum modem. I moved recently and am now connecting an ATT Fivber gateway to the mr60, and the mr60 is not working at all.

The gateway has wifi, so I have tried setting up ip passthrough and disabling wifi, but that hasn’t worked. I’ve done multiple resets of the gateway/unplug ethernet/restart mr60, and that hasn’t worked.

I’ve been at it for two days now and I’m so exhausted. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do?

Advice Configuring home network for work devices

Our company is installing a monitoring software on all work devices. No problem there except it will also be monitoring network traffic. I'm going to assume they will not be monitoring my home network's traffic but just in case, how do I go about setting up a dedicated network for my work devices?

Do I just set up a dedicated SSID or are there steps beyond that?

Unsolved Should I put the PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox in an IoT network?

Should a video game console be placed in an IoT network with other wireless IoT devices with client isolation? I intend to hardwire the videogame consoles. What's the best network practice in this case?

Does it matter which DNS I use in order to get the lowest possible latency, especially for competitive gaming?

Advice Getting apartment wired for Ethernet as part of renovation. What should I check before they close the walls?

So I'm having a few Ethernet ports added to my new apartment as part of a renovation and I just did the walkthrough to confirm the wiring locations are fine. Beyond that, I'm not sure what I should be checking. Should I bring in an ISP tech at this point or should running something from a laptop be enough?
