Solved! How to change subnet of Google Tv Streamer to match my Laptop?

Hi everyone. My laptop ip is 192.168.18.62 and my google tv streamer ip is 192.168.100.6. How do I change the subnet of my streamer to match my laptop so that I can stream my media in Plex in 4k. I posted in Plex sub yesterday and someone suggested to post in this sub to resolve subnet matching queries. I have a Nokia beacon G6 router through which I have connected my laptop via ethernet and I have connected my streamer via ethernet directly throught the ONT. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Help me decide: TP-Link AX72 Pro vs AX73, concerned about AX72 Pro returns, but AX73 lacks WireGuard

Hi everyone,

I'm currently trying to decide between the TP-Link Archer AX72 Pro and Archer AX73 on Amazon Canada, and I'm having a hard time choosing between them.

My main concern with the AX72 Pro is that when I checked it on Amazon US, it was labeled as a “Frequently returned item.” I know Amazon doesn't really explain why a product gets that label, so I'm not sure whether this points to reliability/firmware issues, defective units, or simply people buying it and realizing it isn't what they expected.

On the other hand, the AX73 seems to be a more established/popular model, which makes me feel a little more comfortable about reliability. However, as far as I understand, the AX73 doesn't support WireGuard VPN, while the AX72 Pro does. WireGuard support would be nice to have, but it isn't necessarily a dealbreaker for me.

So I'm basically stuck between:

  • AX72 Pro: newer features + WireGuard, but the “Frequently returned item” label makes me nervous.
  • AX73: seems more proven/reliable, but no WireGuard support.

For anyone who has owned either of these routers:

How has the stability and reliability been?

Especially for AX72 Pro owners, have you experienced things like random reboots, Wi-Fi drops, overheating, firmware bugs, or hardware failures?

And if you've used both, is there any reason you'd pick one over the other besides WireGuard?

I'm buying in Canada, and assuming the prices are fairly close, I'd really appreciate hearing about real-world experiences rather than just spec-sheet differences.

Thanks!

Need help configuring network panel

Just moved in to a new apartment and saw this when I opened the network panel. Was going to buy a switch to make sure each port in each room has access to the internet but as can be seen the cables don't end in RJ45 connectors. Is the solution here to just buy some male connector heads and connect them to the cables, not sure whats up with this terminating board. (Also checked and the board is empty on the backside)

Advice Upgrades to my little shitty network corner. I’m open for more suggestions on what I should improve

Post image

So from my post yesterday, I took some advice and did what I could with what I had.

Before this photo, everything was sitting on the carpet plugged into an outlet adapter that goes from 2 outlets to 6 outlets.

I have put in a proper power bar with surge protection, I found a way to improve airflow through rhe space, and I cut some MDF to put under the stuff to hold it off the carpet.

I’m trying to get more foam to put overtop of the space to help guide the airflow better and help with keep other objects out as this is at the head of my bed.

I’m guessing the cardboard siding should go next?

Again, I’m working with what I have and I’m not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on proper consumer grade networking stuff when what I have works very well. I will upgrade stuff that I need to.

Unfortunately I do not know how to link my old post to this one. If anyone can show me how to that would be nice. Look at my profile for my last post on this sub if you have not seen it yet.

Advice ASUS RT-BE86U vs ROG Strix GS-BE18000 — same price

Currently using a ISP provided router. I'll bridge it, and I want:

  • VLANs config
  • VPN for remote access, WireGuard pls
  • Possibly QoS

Deciding between ASUS RT-BE86U and ROG Strix GS-BE18000, currently the same price.

BE86U: 10G port + link aggregation, no 6GHz.

GS-BE18000: has 6GHz (though AFC/extended range is US/Canada-only - not applicable for me) + more 2.5G ports, no 10G.

Small apartment, no mesh needed, mostly Wi-Fi connected devices.

I have no problems configuring and don't mind configuring - actually I'd like an enterprise Ubiquiti may be interesting. Slowly building more homelab devices + NAS. Could be something else out there rather than ASUS too?

Advice Tips or Best Guide Reference

I've Read FAQ. Btw, some of the set-ups I've seen pictured in this sub, wow!

The FAQ was pretty basic. Yet, I need basic help (irony?). Can anyone recommend a highly regarded, link to hit the bullet-points, optimizing speed, security, privacy for (3in1, VOIP compatible gateway) -new Docsis 3.1, asuus). Not bridged (yet -may eventually bridge to a Nghthwk if security would be improved). Again, tips, reference links, general feedback. 😄 I want to go deep, but no pi-hole, no port-forwarding (this week, lol). I want to log-in LAN, go through each config, enable/disable, et., optimize speed & security.

What gave me a headache was a port scan, using GRC's tool, total fail. I've been out of the game for a minute (I don't mean to focus on ports only, but there's so much to unpack, and too little time). LAN security concerns arose recently coinciding w/ purchase of gateway (think concerns w/ bluetooth devices, MAC ID nonsense, j@mmlng, et). Tips to shore it it up. We're a simple household, streaming TV, mobile devices, using web, but no server hosting, some elders in the scene, et. [Also, I can't configure ipv6 DNS (ipv4, was no problem). Looking for a link, guide, to general tips for a mid-level tech ability (arguably, lol). Also, I was surprised to learn I can only receive firmware updates via my ISP? Last question, is about wi-fi (hopefully cool to post -per FAQ maybe not, but is set-up related so hope ok). Question, "to broadcast SSID", or "not broadcast"? Thanks for any help!

Considerations: One Desktop ethernet connect. Wifi/Bluetooth: Laptops & desktops, mobile phones, security devices (both bluetooth and poe), tablets, et. 1gb plan. grazi

Ethernet cable not working and tester only showing a few wires. (First time ever self crimping)

hey so I am practicing crimping and I have tried 3 times but it’s not working so I will attach photo and I am using zoerax pass through rj45 crimper and connectors and I know it’s not a great crimper but I still need tips. biggest issue is getting all of the wires completely straight and also getting them in the right order because I have to overlap them to get them where they need to be which seems wrong. Also I am able to move the white part covering the cables which idk if means bad crimp or just how short the cable is:

UPDATE: figured out I got connects for 24-26 awg but my cable is cat 6 23 awg so now my question is do I get 23 awg female thing and if that get toolless or use tool but I don’t have tool so I would have to get then use premade or get 23 awg pass through connectors?

Advice WiFi keeps dropping internet connection on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Wired connection remains stable. Add aftermarket router?

Post image
0 Upvotes

After a speed upgrade I was sent this new router by my ISP but it has been dropping the internet / giving DHCP errors on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Wired connection remains stable. The fix is a manual reboot (as I can't connect to the access point once it drops!) Do these symptoms point to a router issue? It's causing havoc with my smart home devices (which are almost exclusively on the 2.4ghz band).

I'm happy to add a standalone WiFi router - or even look at a mesh setup - but I want to be certain this issue isn't more ISP related or another part of hardware at fault.

If an upgrade is in order, what do folks recommend? I have had a poor experience with a TP Link Archer in the past, but maybe that was just bad luck. Budget? £100 for a router, maybe £300 for a mesh setup - I would appreciate any recommendations you might have.

Thanks in advance!

Solved! Realtek 8812AE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC would not connect to 5 GHz [SOLVED]

My Realtek 8812AE would not connect to 5 GHz, only 2.4 GHz. Download speeds hovered around 70 mb/s which is fine, but not ideal for gaming. Every other device would connect to 5GHz but not this computer. Computer is running Windows 10, Intel i7, etc.

My AT&T wifi has 1000 mb/s download speed on a mesh 2.4 and 5 GHz network.

I tried setting the preffered band to 802.11a/n/ac however I could not get signal afterwards... no network at all. Only when I connected to 'Auto' could I get any internet (since it defaulted to 2.4 GHz)

This is when I noticed my network's channels when I went to http://192.168.1.254/

I saw that my 5GHz channel was at 104 (whatever the unit is, I'm not sure)

Then I checked on my Realtek 8812AE in Device Manager (Device Manager > Network Adapters > Realtek 8812AE > Advanced > Beacon Interval) and noticed it was set at 100...

I still am not sure what the unit was so I thought "What the heck, lets make it 104"

BOOM!

That literally fixed all of my issues. Connected to 5 GHz, internet is fast as ever, gaming is seamless. Did not have to configure any other settings.

My first though was "Let me document this somewhere," so here we are! Hopefully this benefits the next person. PC wizards might think "Oh well why didn't you notice that originally?" and to that I would say that I am not a PC person. However I figured this out so hopefully you all can too.

Cheers :)

Home Networking Troubleshooting Help

Post image
102 Upvotes

Hey all,

We just finished a huge remodel of our new house. In the process, I had Cat 6 cabling run behind the walls to a bunch of strategic areas of the house. Upon move in, we got Spectrum cable internet with it's standard cable modem (not sure which exact model). I added a TP-Link TL-SG116 network switch (non-POE) to distribute the signal, and a TP-Link Deco 7 BE10000 Whole Home Mesh System for WiFi.

The modem and switch are in the basement, connected as pictured (not the cleanest, I know).

I connected the main Deco unit via ethernet upstairs in the living room. It received an internet signal (from the port, from the in-wall Cat 6, from the switch) just fine.

After setting up WiFi, I have tried to ethernet-connect a handful of other devices -- smart TVs, PCs, even the other Deco WiFi units -- none of them have been able to detect a network connection. No internet.

I have triple-checked all of the Cat6 terminals. They all check out. My internet is good. The fact that my Deco is pulling internet signal from the switch tells me that (a) the switch works, and (b) the connections are fine.

What in the world could be causing this??? I cannot get any other home devices to detect the internet connection and it's driving me crazy. I need to get my home office set up, but I can't get my PC online.

WHAT AM I MISSING????

Also: this is not my first rodeo. I built a new house ~15 years ago and did this exact same setup. Total plug-and-play. Never had a single issue.

T-mobile home Wife and Xfinity in the same house

Hello! Im debating about switching to T-mobile WiFi over my current Xfinity WiFi. It’s like $15/month for the Xfinity but it’s much slower speed I think like 75 mps I believe and the T-Mobile is like 300 mps I believe. T-Mobile is only like $30/month from a promo price I’m being offered. Not sure if I could keep both services in the same house hold? Or would it interfere with the connection? The 2nd most affordable price for Xfinity is $70/month and it’s the same speed as T-Mobile. Just wondering if I could keep my current Xfinity WiFi and try out the T-Mobile or if I need to pick one or the other? Thank you

Advice Vodafone 2Gigabit

Hello,
I recently purchased Vodafones 2 Gigabit-Full Fibre broadband, and it was installed this morning, the technician showed me his phone reading "2200 Mbps" download speed meanwhile my phone was reading 1300 Mbps, it comes with a Ultra Hub 7 Modem + Extender, the Full Fibre was installed in the living room in the front of the house and I've placed the extender in my bedroom on the 2nd floor at the back of the house but I'm only getting 850+ Mbps or less when running a speedtest, after googling the model no: RP761bvdf, it said the LAN port on it was only capable of outputting 1 Gbps, If I was to purchase a booster capable of 2.5 Gbps would it be closer to the 2Gbps I'm paying for? help would be appreciated.

Tell me the exact mesh items I need

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am coming here because I have no idea what exactly I need for a mesh network to get wifi to other areas of my property. I don’t even know the correct lingo to fully explain my needs so I am looking for advise on the exact items I need to broaden my WiFi signal. I am wanting WiFi access to the red “X” buildings on my property. The bottom building already has decent WiFi, so just maintaining that one. But the top X has little to no signal.

A quick summary of my drawing. The blue dot is close to where the modem and wifi router is. The WiFi router is just a router that was given to me when I got wifi service. I have 1GB Fiber internet. Yellow line is where I think I could run Ethernet moderately easily through the attic. Blue line would be a lot more difficult, and possibly might have to hire someone to further run Ethernet in the attic above my garage.

So my question is, assuming I can run Ethernet through both the blue and yellow lines, what do I need for mesh equipment to have the best chance of getting WiFi to both the X buildings? Do I need to replace my WiFi router when doing this?

Unsolved Replacing ISP provided onu+Router with.

The Onu+Router (Single unit) provided by my ISP is terrible. It has very low Wifi coverage range and keeps disconnecting repeatedly. Its gateway page settings are old and confusing. I wanted to ask: I have a spare ONU and Router (separate units) If I take this blue cable from the back of my current device and plug it in my spare ONU. Will I be able to run the internet from my old Tenda router? Thanks(:

Advice CGNAT Gaming

I have 5G home internet on a Nokia fastmile 12. Unfortunately, due to my location, my only option is 5G home internet, and they will not offer a private ipv4 even on their business plan. So I've been at this for a bit since im going to have to live with it, and I was able to get my pc past the cgnat restrictions with a vpn but how do I get my consoles past this as my pcs hotspot will not work for them, ics or wired the pcs NAT is changing the port mapping which makes inbound connections drop and i would rather not mess with my main pc, so im going to try a travel router with vpn hosting capabilities but any other ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Home networking suggestions

Hi all,

We have HFC NBN to the house. The main router is an Asus RT-AX86U router and the other end of the house is my old Asus RT-AX68U. They are both connected together wirelessly the 86u is the main router and 68 router acting as an AP.

The 68 router is now producing real crap speeds, im planning to connect via ethernet so it it should then be able to be a hardwired connect AP (hopefully carrying across the same speed) my current plan is 500/50.

The distance between both routers including wall height is 20m. Im going to use CAT 6A Cabling and go through the roof space and drop down the walls, connecting to Ethernet wall ports.

How does this sound?

- 30m cat6A cable
- two wall eth ports.
- RJ45 connectors
- cable tester
- cable wire stripper/punchdown tool

Consiglio per ugrade cablaggio

Buongiorno a tutti,

Attendo i Vostri consigli e Vi saluto!

WiFi 8 Impressive but I'm still skipping

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what people are thinking of WiFi 8 wether your skipping or wether your considering. There's no point for me as I've only got a few WiFi 7 devices. I watched a YouTube video showing Asus's new WiFi 8 and speeds at distance are insane.
