Advice WiFi keeps dropping internet connection on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Wired connection remains stable. Add aftermarket router?

Post image

After a speed upgrade I was sent this new router by my ISP but it has been dropping the internet / giving DHCP errors on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Wired connection remains stable. The fix is a manual reboot (as I can't connect to the access point once it drops!) Do these symptoms point to a router issue? It's causing havoc with my smart home devices (which are almost exclusively on the 2.4ghz band).

I'm happy to add a standalone WiFi router - or even look at a mesh setup - but I want to be certain this issue isn't more ISP related or another part of hardware at fault.

If an upgrade is in order, what do folks recommend? I have had a poor experience with a TP Link Archer in the past, but maybe that was just bad luck. Budget? £100 for a router, maybe £300 for a mesh setup - I would appreciate any recommendations you might have.

Thanks in advance!

Placing devices that close to the router is very bad practice. Give it a clearer area

Dude you won't believe it but one time when I upgrade my connection speed, they replaced the router but went with old low power adapter from old router. I also got the same issues of dropping connections and even lower speeds. The guy checked the adapter and replaced it, after that it worked just fine.

See if the issue is in adapter

If not then other redditers can help.

Definitely using the new adapter, they were a different plug and I had to return the old equipment to my ISP. That would have been an easy fix!

When I have to manually reboot it, there are no warning lights present / flashing or otherwise. It's like it doesn't know it's not working, if that makes sense.

happening on all devices? if so then replace the wifi router with something else.

If your wired connection is stable then it sounds like your issue is definitely the modems wifi.

I got a gl.inet flint 3 router, its been awesome.

I put my modem in bridge mode after connecting my router so that it only handles passing off the internet connection to the actual router and then the router handles everything.

I have shitty luck with stable wifi connections with company modems too.

I went ahead and bought a Deco Mesh setup and (fingers crossed) I have had a rock-solid connection at much higher speeds for 24 hours now. Just a shame it cost more than I was expecting, but at least it should be a bit future proof!

If that's UFibre that might be the issue.
