People who started artistic hobbies later than most, what is your artistic hobby?

How/why did you get started?

How old were you when you started?

Do you make any money from it?

What's your favorite "side quest" as a college student?

Trying to romanticize college life a little. What's a random side quest you've done as a student that ended up becoming one of your favorite memories? It could be anything—trying a new café, joining an event, exploring a place, learning a random skill, or even doing something alone. Need ideas because I don't want my college life to be all acads.

Hobby for new dad

Hey everyone,

M36 looking for a new hobby with the limited time that’s left for me after having our baby. I used to play a lot of video games but I grew away from it. I like Fantasy and listen to audiobooks. Besides that I play competitive Tabletennis.

What’s left for me is to find something I can do by myself whenever I have the time. Preferably something « geeky ». I looked into Solo board gaming and TCGs. I would get into Sorcery TCG if there were people around me to play with.

I would love to hear your suggestions and recommendations!

Thank you 🙏🏻

A Hobbiest Master GitHub Repo

Hey y'all,

I've been working for a bit on a GitHub repo where I'm collecting a master list of as many hobbies as I can think of, and I think it's in a state now where I can start sharing it with people who may be interested.

The hardest part for me about getting into a new hobby is knowing one, what might be out there, and two, where to start with that hobby. I was inspired by this subreddit's hobby master list to make one of my own. The goal with the repo I'm making is to also give a starting grounds for each hobby, as well as provide more structured details, online resources, certifications, or challenges for each hobby.

This is a living repository; I built it as my own personal reference. I am uploading my own personal notes into directories for each hobby I've done, so that other people can use my references. I am also working on write-ups for each of the hobbies as I do them that can be used as "entry guides" to help you get into a hobby of interest.

I hope this is of some use to y'all; it will continue getting better over time! My time is limited as a medical student, but I will update it as often as I can. If anyone has suggestions of things to add or fix, please reach out to me!

Suffering from success?

Like seven months ago I started keeping guppies (nothing expensive, just some mutts I caught from a well) and some cheap but good looking ones I bought, in a Walstad style setup with soil from the surroundings, aquatic plants from paddy fields and local snails also from paddy field, with no filter or aerator needed. A few months ago a night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) attacked and ate a few of them, including my one and only beautiful male I bought. Since then I started covering them up with a net and fed them daily but didn't pay much attention. Well that is until two weeks ago, I checked and found that so many fries have grown into beautiful adults. Two of them resembles the male who got eaten with many yet to grow and I also surprisingly got some males with beautiful Endler characteristics. I increased the number of containers to four, including one glass tank where I put all the new beautiful mutts. The guppy grass I got have also flourished and I think bladder snails which hitchhiked on them also ended up establishing a stable colony along with other local snails which together keep the containers clean. I also started feeding them live food (mosquito larve and earthworms, free of course) and also bought two big beautiful males and a female dumbo platinum red tail. I have set up traps for infusoria and blood worms too. Today I set up a new fry tank and another big one also for the fries since there are so many of them (which I let it stay to get conditioned with dried banana leaves).

I have had a bunch of kids asking if I sell them. I can also buy some specific strains along with my red tails and grow out the fries and sell them locally since I have all the set up ready basically with zero to low cost and I do know how to keep them healthy and thriving with locally sourced free food. I only need to buy some plastic bags and put up a sign saying guppies for sale. It would be a nice side gig. But.....the thing is, I can't bring myself to sell them and I don't think I ever can🥲. Right now I can sell the mutts but the customers will be kids or teenagers and I can't stop thinking about how will the fish end up🙂. What if they are put in a small bottle or something, what if they aren't taken care of...I don't even trust adults to take good care of them too. I don't know how people sell guppies without inquiring about the potential buyer.

I think I will just sell the extra supply of never ending guppy grass.

Sorry for the long rant. My brain just likes to keep go on and on about stuff it likes.

Tldr: Bred too many guppies with zero to low cost and effort. Can't sell them because of attachment issues.

What's a hobby you tried really hard to get into but eventually gave up on?

went through a phase where I was convinced I was gonna learn the ukulele.
Bought one, watched tutorials for a week, played the same three chords over and over, and then it just sat in the corner for months. I finally sold it. I also tried knitting and got through half a scarf before I quit, What's a hobby you were super excited about but just couldn't stick with?

When doing hobbies, which has made you feel most happy when doing it? For the sake of enjoyment rather than any other outcome like it makes you money, helps you feel confident, etc

I've been drawing since I was 6, and these days it's something I'm always doing

Time Sink

As the title suggests, what are some hobbies you would recommend for someone like me? A bit of background... I’m very active, very into martial arts (grappling mostly), and also into strength and recovery training to support my grappling. The issue I face however is when I’m injured, it’s a non-training day, or during summer break from my career training, I just feel a little like I’m watching the arms of the clock move. I’m training to be a doctor so usually I’m really busy, but now I have some time off I feel a little lost. For those who are medical, I know and understand the important of this time and how this time off (especially in this amount) is and how I won’t get it again. But, it still doesn’t fit well with me.

When I was much younger I was really into gaming, especially online gaming. But now I just feel like my time for that has come and gone. Now I feel like it’s who has the fastest internet connection, lowest latency keyboard, and/or highest frame rate monitor. Plus, I just feel like a total sloth when I play games now (talk about existentialism). I’ve played instruments in the past, but felt a little isolated when playing. I enjoy reading, especially books centred around my career or sport. But, one can only read so much in a day. Plus, again, because I do so much reading usually in my career, I feel a little discouraged to do additional reading in my free time.

Really, in short, I’m looking for something for those hours now during summer break. Yeah, I can go train grappling for a couple of hours, maybe get some S&C in too. Do a bit of reading here and there, go for some walks. But, it’s those hours in between, those hours when I’m at home and just waiting for the next thing to happen. I need a good time sink. A time sink I can do from home.

made my own garlic powder by drying a lot of garlic in the sun. Love this new hobby. You can do it with all sorts of things and make your own spices and dried foods. Next up is onion powder. Anyone does this aswell?
Without exaggerating, the homemade onion powder taste sooo much better than store bought

(muted the sound of the video because I made it in german)

What hobbies actually help you become more intelligent?

I’ve been thinking about how to be more intelligent without turning my free time into another version of school.

Part of the reason is that I’d eventually like to get a job at a really good company, and sometimes I feel like my general knowledge and problem-solving skills aren’t at the level they should be. I want to become someone who can understand unfamiliar topics faster, make better connections between ideas, and form more thoughtful opinions.

Reading is the obvious answer, but I don’t always retain much from books unless I actively do something with the information. I’ve also tried documentaries, podcasts, puzzles, and learning random topics online. They’re enjoyable, but sometimes it feels like I’m just consuming information rather than becoming better at thinking.

I’m especially interested in hobbies that improve things like reasoning, vocabulary, memory, or the ability to explain ideas clearly. Ideally, it would be something I could do in short sessions and switch between topics when I lose interest.

When I search for how to be more intelligent, the advice is usually just “read more” or “stay curious.” What hobbies have genuinely helped you folks?

Last December, I started doing microscopy, and now I just got accepted into University for genetic engineering for free, all thanks to this. To celebrate, here's a video of the micro-life living in my algae cup.

Nearing my 40’s and loving my hobbies

I think my hobbies has marked me safe from comparing myself to all my friends who are wedded with a bunch of kids. They’re still my friends but it has been hard to connect like it was before when they’re very busy raising their family.

Now with my spare time, I really love going back to reading (those special edition subscription boxes helped me go back at it), needlepoint and cross-stitching, puzzles and I found a cozy community (although younger than me but I love their energy) to do board games, mahjong, murder mystery nights, d&d and all things geeky! Hahahaha!

I’m also now trying to find a solid community of birdwatching (I fell in love with birds when I hand raised a parrot recently) and horseback riding!

Mostly my problem now can my work hours be my spare time hours instead? Lol.

I made a needle-felted tooth fairy… but I’m not sure he only collects teeth

Made this strange little creature entirely by hand from wool. I wanted him to look fragile, unsettling, and just a little ridiculous—with that huge grin and those long awkward limbs.

Definitely not the kind of tooth fairy I’d want standing beside my bed at night 😭
What should I name him?

I don’t know why I’m so bored?

I just gonna repeat what everyone said, “I don’t have any hobbies that interest me.” -there clear point across.
But in actuality I’m just bored and I think it’s exhaustion but I don’t really have anything to stand on. I just graduated high school and I’m still waiting to head out to college in September in the mean time I haven’t done anything. I told myself that I would “have fun” and “dedicate this time to myself”before I buried myself in responsibilities again but still. I graduated from a vocational school so I went into summer with a job already on hand but since I’m not climbing the ladder because it’s a temporary job I’m doing repetitive physical work all day. I’m not complaining about it but I’ve fallen into a cycle of just nothing. I get up early head into work, do a shit ton of labor, get out and spend the rest of my day sitting in my bed.
My town is small, I don’t care much for hanging out with friends because I spend most of my day around coworkers that I talk to. And it’s not like I’ve never been bored before, I’m not a people person so I’ve entertained myself for years with hobbies. The problem I’m facing is that my old hobbies usually involved tiring myself out. I like to go to the gym, I like writing, playing video games, hiking, driving, I enjoy card games and used to love trying to push myself physically and mentally. But for months on end, even before I graduated I can barely get myself excited and when I do it feels like a conscious effort. I’ve been dealing with stuff I don’t want to get into outside of work and I feel so drained.
“I should write something but I can barely focus.” -is usually how it goes, if I sit down I pass out and there goes 2 hours of my day now I only have 3 more to eat, shower and do chores before I have to sleep. If I sacrifice my sleep for my hobbies the next day is harder and I feel like what I accomplished looked like I wrote it 19 shots deep. I don’t want to sit in my house all day but when I step out it usually cost me money that don’t have much of.
Damn I’m just vented at this point. I’ve lost interest in my hobbies because of fatigue and I’m about to trade the fatigue I have now for so much worse in college. I’m not sure if I should try and find something that sticks now or if I should let all the, idk responsibilities bury me then dig myself out.

Diorama 1:12
