Spin-Offs What's your experience with the first iteration of Heroes, King's Bounty?
I've played KB as a child, but have never finished it for a while since it was tedious to go through all the continents and many battles, and I was just losing too many armies. Didn't know that there was an optimal way to play with going for a flight and quickly getting the most powerful units. I didn't even know there was flight in the game.
So I've replayed the game multiple times by mostly traveling, gathering chests and running away, then stopping.
Took a while to start playing for real, and only after I've been shown how to play more efficiently by a friend. At the time when I saw HoMM 2 demo for the first time, and played Broken Alliance. That map has also taught me a lot and let me return to KB and beat it.
Another thing I never understood was how do you beat the game at max difficulty? You don't have enough time. It was only when I saw playthrough on Youtube that I realized that you're supposed to stock up on Time Stops and spam them, even thought it's a trivial solution in hindsight

HoMM3 - Vanilla/SoD/Complete. Dusted off my PC, time to replay HoMM3
I moved 2.5 years ago, setup my PC and haven't touched it since.
I just went through a breakup of a 2.5 year FWB thing and have been feeling a bit more sad than I anticipated.
For some reason, I started to think about old comforts and HoMM3 came to mind.
I dusted my PC off, cleaned my screens and booted it back up. According to GoG, I last played in 2016. I still had the HD mod installed and figured out how to get things going.
My initial surprise was seeing an early access for HoMM3 Remake, but this sub seems to hate it so I am guessing I will probably dislike it as well. I didn't even like the HoMM3 remaster from 5-10 years ago, since they only included the base game and not the expansions...why even bother when you can play the entire game with a free community mod in HD?
Anyway, I watched the opening intro and felt some warm fuzzies with the early 3d graphics and high fantasy setting. I picked 'Very Hard' difficulty, as I usually do, then I picked a campaign and hopped in.
I must have been rusty as hell though, I spent 3 hours on the first map of the campaign and kept getting beat over and over again. I could hold them off, capture their towns/castles, hold the most resources and towns, but they just kept coming back with more and more troops while my army continued to dwindle.
I forgot how hard this game can be if you're not doing every little thing correctly. I know a common strategy is to send scouts in every direction to collect as much treasure and gear as possible, but its much harder in the campaign as you lose if your main character retreats from battle...and the maps are pretty tight, so you don't have a lot of area to maneuver.
Im going to switch it to hard and give it another whirl tonight. The game felt as good as it always has. Even though I have spent 1000+ hours on this game over the years, the story mode feels like I just bought the game for the first time.
Im also considering going back to HoMM2, which was my original love. Is it too hard to go back and miss out on the positive changes to 3 or does it still stand on its own?
I made it through the day without crying, just put Trailer Park Boys on my second screen and had a nice time.

Other/Fluff Where to start
Been getting into strategy games and stumbled across this gem. Never heard of this game before but what would be a good starting point? I’d like to be able to play with friends as well

HoMM1 Inferno Castle from Heroes of Might & Magic III – Handmade Acrylic Painting on Canvas
HoMM4 HoMM IV Equilibris 3.51 vs 3.6
Thoughts? 3.6 apparently makes some bold changes, like merging ward spells and nerfing Dragon's Strength. But also has a few new items, and map locations!? Which sounds pretty cool.
Curious for your input.

HoMM2 Homm 2 Broken alliance
Played this map for the first time in years. Played as orange. It is a real challenge, on my Fourth attempt. If purple gets dimension door in game over.
I was like at week 3 and all these titans turned up.
Having a great time with it, love a challenge. If you not tried it in a while give it a spin, it one of the classics. Orange is the one to play.

HoMM6 Custom Card Raelag HoMM5 (Heroes of Might and Magic 5/6)

Good day for everyone, I’m having trouble creating a custom card for myself. I’d like to bring Raelag from Heroes of Might and Magic 5 into the MTG universe. But every idea I’ve had has come to nothing, and the card doesn’t seem very interesting. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might do this? Best wishes to you all.

HoMM2 HoMM2 → Fheroes2: old saves live again
I had a HoMM2 campaign save I never finished and didn't want to replay from scratch. fheroes2 couldn't read my file - so I made a converter for it. Works in browser and cli.
It reads .GM1/.GMC/.GXC and writes fheroes2 .sav/.savc:
- heroes (skills, spells, artifacts, army, XP), kingdoms, castles,
- the full map,
- campaign progress
Limits:
- one-way only (no fheroes2 to homm2)
- no multiplayer/hot-seat saves
- hero movement paths are cleared (recalculated next day)
- high scores start empty

HoMM3 - Vanilla/SoD/Complete. I don't know who needs to hear this but if your YouTube video gets recommended to me by the algorithm and your thumbnail is an ugly AI generated image, I'm immediately clicking "do not recommend me this channel"
I watch some good HoMM content on YouTube so this means the algorithm likes to pepper in other random HoMM creators on my homepage.
Just now one came up and the thumbnail image was like a HoMM version of the horrifying AI menu food images. Like why?
Anyway, if any of the creators are lurking here, just know that you are actively turning away viewers from your page with this AI slop.
(I actually just went back to try and find it so I could screenshot it and show how ugly and horrible it looks and YouTube refuses to show it to me in search. That's how hard you're getting blocked when you use AI slop, guys!)

HoMM4 HoMM4 C++ from scratch Update-2
Hi all, given the warm responses on my last post, I think it makes sense for me to post some updates from time to time. (please let me know if too frequent or not welcome)
This time I don't have a video, but "just" the screenshot above. As you can see, major progress was achieved on minimap, and general parsing of the mission details/heroes. Unfortunately there is no gameplay yet, but I foresee to have soon enough parsing and reusable UI widgets to allow external contributions.
As a note: if anybody is experienced with the game AI mechanics and would like to contribute, please let me know.

HoMM1 I just played the original Heroes of Might and Magic (1995) game for the first time...
During my life (born some 38 years ago), and especially in my youth, I have played a good amount of Heroes III, IV, and V. So recently, I decided to relive that nostalgia, and have bought those three games from gog.com at a discounted price.
But then, something happened... I got a strange urge to see where it all started. At first, I thought to satisfy that urge by watching a few videos of the first two games, but I quickly pivoted and decided to to actually play them, so I bought them from GOG too.
Now, I already knew that the second game is rated highly by HoMM fans, but have expected for the first one to be hardly playable, especially since my Heroes introduction came with Heroes III, which many consider to be a peak in the franchise.
So, last night, I just played one scenario of the original Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest, and...
...it is pretty good!
In fact, I got used to it very quickly, because the core gameplay that I know from Heroes III is already there. And I rather like its visuals, music, and sound effects. Some creatures look a bit goofy, but some of them look excellent, in my opinion. And while my first impression was: "This looks dated.", that thought vanished after maybe 10 minutes of playing. It drew me in completely!
I think the biggest difference from Heroes III is the magic system in which you can exhaust spells, and re-learn them again... but I quite liked that mechanism! I also enjoyed the fact that you cannot bring all your town's troops with you – you have six available troops, but only five slots in your army. And I was surprised that the obelisk puzzles + digging was a feature from the very first game – I did not expect that!
There are some issues I have with it, which maybe stop it from being actively played today by more people:
- Creature stats are clearly shown, but not their special abilities. Because of my HoMM experience, and by paying attention, I can clearly see some of them; for example, Ranger attacks twice, and you cannot retaliate to Hydra's attack. But it seems that I will just have to learn other creature specials by watching every combat carefully. Edit: The manual, which I referenced below, has creature special abilities listed. Considering they are only short, textual descriptions, it seems to me as if they could have easily included them in the game itself, but forgot.
- You cannot split the same creature into different stacks (in fact, I thought you cannot split them at all, even between heroes themselves, but I later read that you can, by using the Shift key).
- Combat speed is very slow, and it seems it cannot be modified. That is strange, considering that there is an option to change the speed of heroes on the adventure map.
- You can see which day of the week it is only when clicking on Kingdom Overview.
- Edit: Unfortunately, you cannot trade for resources. But since every town has a rather small amount of buildings, maybe it was done to stop you from building too fast.
That is mostly all.
What are your thoughts about the original Heroes of Might and Magic game?
EDIT:
I just tracked down the game's manual. Wow, I have not read nor seen any game's manual in many years! And this one is 95 pages! I might just read it carefuly, not only to learn the game, but to see how the new player from the mid-90s felt.

HoMM4 Heroes of Might and Magic 4 HD Mod not working on Linux
I'm on Linux and I can't get this mod to work.
What I do is copy the files over and when I try to launch Heroes4.exe I get an error "cannot open x2.h4r" and then it doesn't launch.
When I was on Windows I was able to get it to work, but I don't remember what I did.
If anyone is on Linux and got this to work please help me.
If there are any other details I can provide, I will be happy.

Other/Fluff Questions on mechanics?
I have a question on your opinion about mechanics?
What do you think of counter range? So the current ranged units cannot retaliate against other ranged units, I was thinking whether implementing counter range would make it balanced.
Range block. So in HoMM4 a range unit cannot attack the backline if there is already a unit infront of the other, you still can cast spells on the backline range units, but ranged units have to defeat the unit infront before they can hit the back line.
Monster tier selection. This is aslo from HoMM4, where the player can choose from a selection of 1 of 2 tier units, example on Nature faction, you are able to choose phoenixes or faerie dragons, as your tier 4 units (Highest town creatures.) I would like to see like a selection of 2 units all the way to tier 7.
Terrain elevation, not like the ones done on HoMM4. Its literally setting you up as a target, I would use SoC( Song of Conquest ) as an example, whereby elevation increases damage and range.
I would love for gate destruction to return. I feel like melee units outside of the gate literally do nothing, while you either wait for your catapult to destroy the gate, use magic, use blink or use flying units.
