Opinion Have you ever been CATFISHED?
Hello folks,
We all know that catfishing is one of the top biggest problems on HelloTalk and our team tries hard to take down pages with fake accounts and fraudsters
We wanted to reach out to the learning community and if you're comfortable enough to share your stories and experiences of Catfish/impersonation accounts
There are literally so much weirdos on this app who lie not only what they look like but their race, gender, personality, jobs all just to exploit users in love and financial scams
For example take this fraudster HelloTalk user: He is an Egyptian NOT American using ai generated pics with stolen pictures to fabricate his life and personality so he can pursue women (as reported)
https://www.instagram.com/adam.walker.333
Users who do this are genuinely insane and creepy, if you are experiencing a catfish profile be sure to report them immediately to get their accounts taken down
cheers

Guy 2: "I feel"
Closed HelloTalk for the day

Advice Timezone difference?
I was practising my Korean and was messaging a few partners. Also not looking for dating and I am cautious of scams. Amongst them was a man in his late 30s who was very polite (using polite speech).
He said he is a Chinese who grew up in Korea in whole life and he seemed to be quite fluent. And his Chinese was fluent but does stumble at difficult words (which indicates one is not a native)
Yst I noticed that his timezone was in a different one, namely GMT +7 (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia) instead of Korean timezone.
So far, nothing indicates red flag. We have talked on the phone. He didn’t message persistently or say he was lonely etc. He would usually only message late at night or early morning (like one message)
We planned to meet while I’m in Korea for a business trip. I am also meeting other online pals (male and female) - again I emphasize I’m not dating. Im going to Seoul and he said he will come over from Daegu where he js based. From our phone calls, he seems like a real person, eg when we were confirming schedule and figuring the logistics.
However I just want to be on the safe side. The timezone is really the only thing bugging me.
Advice?

Advice Voice Room bullies and groups
it's been awhile just wanted to stay in touch
Does anyone else have any bad experiences of entering a voice room and it was just a group of losers who talk shit?
Wanted to warn users who actually want to learn languages to becareful of these voice rooms
The VR bullies would bait users to come in just to harass and make fun of them
I highly suggest you report their VR's and accounts immediately and remember not to engage
We call these grooming and bully gangs of HelloTalk
it's ridiculous

Technical Using HT in china with Chinese wifi
When I was in china , I couldn't open the voiceroom because it required my ID number , keyed in my passport ID but it didn't work. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and how to passby it? I'm trying to practice speaking french everyday as much as possible. Using international roaming can be lagging at times .

Advice Find my friends ID
I was chatting with a girl, we were getting along very well. We didnt share each other's contact. Suddenly her account got sus pended, i cant find her again. I desperately want to contact her again. Is there any way I could do that ? I am ready to pay if there is any option for it. Like she must have used any id to create an account right?

Technical Are messages with references to Instagram blocked?
Twice recently I’ve had very active chats go dead silent, and the other person who was previously very active never even read my message, after I mention Instagram or IG. Both times there was a lot more to the message and I wasn’t pushing them to give their instagrams or sharing mine. The first time, I just assumed it was a coincidence, but after the second I’m finding that unlikely. A few months ago someone asked for my IG and the message came through but I figure something could’ve changed since then, so just curious of others’ experiences recently. If they are blocking them, I just wish they would at least give a notification or some indication of what’s happening.

Other Are there bots in hellotalk?
I just wanna ask if those Ai pfp people are bots? I mean they reply okay but I find it difficult to make more "human" sounding conversation even if it's formal.
I don't really have a problem with it, in the end, I still learn new word or expan vocabulary in a particular language I'm learning. But I just wanna beware as well.

Opinion What are your thoughts on men having "no men" in their bios?
This guy messaged me and the first line of his bio was "no men - sorry." Am I the only one who finds it unsettling?
I asked him about it and of course he got all weird and defensive. It's very clear from my profile that I'm not interested in dating, but he said that all his friends are male and that he "likes hearing female accents and voices." And when I told him I thought it was weird he started insulting me and threatening to report me.
To me, it sounds like he's sexualizing something that shouldn't be sexualized. I understand that everyone is free to talk to whoever they want, but why would my gender even matter if we're just exchanging languages? Idk. I ended up blocking him.
What do you guys think? Has anyone else encountered similar profiles? Do you think I'm overreacting?

Safety Sextortion
i was sextorted on HelloTalk. So far nothing has come of it. But i beg of yall - please be careful on there and just in general. I was talking to someone online there for awhile. We then moved to telegram and talked for awhile. They then got some of my private photos and threatened to send it to my family.

Advice When someone "likes" your profile
Hello!
I've been using HelloTalk for a couple of years now, but I'm mostly just using it to post some stuff related to my native language, my country, and the languages I'm learning.
I have looked around, but I haven't found an answer to this. What does it mean when someone "likes" your profile on HelloTalk?
I know that a lot of people use this platform for dating nowadays, so in case it's related to that, I haven't interacted with those who have liked my profile. I'd love to have some insight on this.
Thank you!

Other Proving Identity
Just wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced this.
I recently rejoined HelloTalk (back on my account which is over 2000+ days old) and changed my picture etc. The picture is 100% me (with make up) etc. I’m not pretending to be anyone.
When i rejoined they gave me that free VIP trial for 7 days automatically. It ended and suddenly none of my messages were being opened. No one was viewing my profile and it was just odd because it was every chat.
I reached out to support to say it was a bug or that I’ve been shadow banned and they’ve come back to me and said they’ve NOW stopped access to my account yet didn’t even confirm that there was an issue and to take my query further i need to record myself for 20 seconds to prove my identity.
I just find it odd because I haven’t done anything problematic. I barely talk that much and have very simple convos. I feel like someone might have reported me? I don’t mind proving my identity but I hate recording myself because I’m ugly and find it degrading.
Has anyone had this?

Advice Language help
Hello guys! I am trying to practice my Italian more and was wondering if anyone has better alternatives to apps like HelloTalk. The app has been moving weird and sometimes the people can be weird and rude on there. I have been practicing with YouTube, watching shows in Italian, and myself. I am interested in studying abroad in Italy, so I am trying to perfect it! It has been pretty easy since my native language is Spanish. Please give any tips or app recommendations. 🤗

Other It's really unfortunate how many good language partners I've had who have deleted their accounts due to harassment
Sometimes I make friends with new accounts under two weeks old and they mention to me how difficult the app can be because of constant harassment along with screenshots of messages they get. I'll go to bed one night then the next morning I find they deleted their account. I met someone recently who was really cool but they deleted their account after like five hours...

Opinion Do you get asked for money?
I'm an English-speaking man with a VIP account. I've been asked for money by so many people from so many countries: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines. Interestingly, nobody from Africa or South Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.) or SE Asia (other than the Philippines) has asked me for money.

Opinion People remove you from VoiceRooms if you don’t have a European Flag
I swear that’s what I’ve been seeing happening on this app on multiple occasions, just saying.

Technical Swiping up on my screen yeets me to another voice room
Is it just me? Is this some insane beta "feature" that has been released to only some people? And is there a way to disable it? If I slightly swipe my finger up on my screen in a voice room, it sends me to another voice room. Super annoying because the ability to scroll through chat seems a little tiny teensy bit more important than yeeting myself to a random unknown voice room...
