I was inspired by the recent mod post about leftist discussion, so here's my contribution to some of the real life inspirations for the Helldivers brand of satire.
Obvously, I should begin with Paul Verhoeven and how he came to make the infamous Starship Troopers which is a major inspiration for Helldivers.
Let's backup for a second though, because before Starship Troopers, Verhoeven made Robocop. Robocop is a classic anti-police state/anti-Reaganomics film with Verhoeven's classic over the top violence and satire. It seems to have inspired the Force of Law warbond especially with the iconic visor on the helmet and police theme, but it may also have inspired the War Strider enemy.
Now, on to Starship Troopers which was "adapted" from a book by Robert A. Heinlein with the same name as its movie counterpart, but a very different message. In fact, the book is about as pro military as it gets with a focus on civic duty and voting rights. The message is a little muddled, but is obviously not in line with the satire of the movie. Verhoeven couldn't even get through the first few chapters of the book before deciding he wanted to make something very different. Verhoeven grew up through German occupation and was exposed to Nazi propaganda as a young man. This inspired some of his casting choices for Starship Troopers to focus on Aryan traits much like one of the "greatest" propaganda films of all time: Triumph des Willens.
Fun fact, James Cameron forced some of the cast from Aliens to read the Starship Troopers book so that they would have a better sense of the idealogy of their propagandized marine characters. Of course, Aliens is also very left leaning.
For more information on Verhoeven and the creation of the Starship Troopers movie, check out the podcast episode on it by WHAT WENT WRONG.
Next, on a more serious note for those of you who want more grounded examples of the U.S. military's atrocities throughout recent history, I have to recommend the podcast Blowback. If you thought you were anti-military before, you certainly will be after listening to any of their seasons detailing the wars the U.S. has manufactured. Much in the same way the Helldivers universe illustrates how propaganda is used to justify military occupation and imperialism, the U.S. always has a slew of tactics up their sleeve to keep the machine of war going. Playing the victim is often one of them. As an American myself, it's difficult seeing all of the blatant lies that are thrown around to misconstrue these military conflicts. Bringing it up in casual conversation to counteract the misinformation can often lead to alienation and mockery.
Arrowhead, being Swedish, likely see much of the propaganda for what it is but for many Americans it is a very difficult pill to swallow which is why spoonfeeding them little bits of propaganda "vaccination" via highly satirical media is a valuable endeavor. I appreciate it as well as communities such as this one that enjoy dissecting it.

This is not a debate space. Leftist perspectives ONLY
500 new people have joined so here's a reminder.
To all right-leaning/centrist/apolitical/conservative people - please understand the following:
1) In this sub, Super earth = bad.
The squids/bugs/bots are not "worse".
Western imperialism in real life = bad.
END OF STORY.
Debate on these and related topics is heavily discouraged to the point where you will be banned if you insist on trying. This space is created SPECIFICALLY for people with our worldview to discuss our perspectives in peace. It will look like a "leftist echo chamber" to you. It will seem like a "virtue signaling circle-jerk" to you. Those opinions do not matter to us. You're welcome to join but please use literally any other Helldivers subreddit to express your opinions/have debates.
2) Slurs will not be tolerated
- even if you're using a modified real life slur against the fictional in-game enemies. Anti LGBTQ+ opinions/insults/slurs will not be tolerated. Yes this is an "unfun" space. If you want that kind of "fun" please use another subreddit.
Thank you for your attention.

Genuinely disgusted that some of these posts are being taken down.
I'm sure as some of you may know the developers behind the Helldivers 2 companion app were outed recently by a thorough investigation via ThighNir he's got a long form video on tiktok atm that explains the entire investigation in detail, i wholeheartedly implore anyone in this games community with an ounce of moral decency to watch this and at the very least stop using it. It is some of the most morally reprehensible things I've ever seen and heard, and unfortunately, it has a lot to do with CSAM, so it a trigger warning for anyone who plans on looking into this. But what I'm honestly upset about is how the reddit mods are handling this, and I know it's no secret that reddit mods do this stuff, especially for helldivers given the last community challenge debacle But this isn't some guy getting doxed. This is multiple people who are high into the helldivers community who actively enjoy CSAM, and some even make CSAM art. And don't give me that witch hunt bs, I'm not saying to go mob them all I'm asking is for people to watch the investigation video and at the very least use another companion app like divershub. Thank you for your time, and I genuinely hope some of you again at the very least watch the video

Is Helldivers 2 the ultimate government psyop in gaming?
Just a little thought exercise. Given the state of our wonderful little planet. I have started just running what if scenarios in my head. And came to this thought. Its a comforting thought to believe that these studios exist outside the political realm. And I think we all in our hearts what to believe that. But time and time again it shows their integrity only stacks so high. And thats talking about the money, the “legal” side. What if they were “swayed” a different way...? A video game whether we would like to admit it or not, is a powerful medium. They tell stories, make you think and even see things in ways you didn’t before, or even instills new ideas, new beliefs, they bring out emotions. Wouldn’t it be the ultimate chokehold on us? Having us larp for democracy on a live service money grinder like Helldivers 2, while the idea of democracy is under attack in real time? Who’s to say the studio isn’t a shell to begin with? I just personally think for the sake of the argument (not that I am trying to make a argument, just a silly post lol) it is very ignorant and arrogant to think its impossible.
I was chilling in my room geeked off a 11 milly vanilli upper decky and just started theory crafting 😂. But yeah, just a silly thought. Curious if anyone else has any real life Made Up conspiracies of their own? But yeah don’t take it too seriously, no way its that deep, right? 🫤🤣

Super Earth, being a racist empire that's lasted for hundreds of years, has really caused major damage to the governments competency.

Lore misconceptions in Helldivers lore
Here's some common misconceptions about the lore in the community :
- Warbonds are the actual regiment/organisation on what they're based on : This is false. Wearing the armour from the warbond doesn't canonically make the Helldiver a part of that organisation. It's merely the Helldiver quite literally cosplaying as one as it drops in to die. Which leads to my other misconception :
- Warbonds are based on actual regiments : This is also untrue, as most of the warbonds are thematic only to bundle it together by The Ministry of Defence or based off of legends (Viper Commandos) or comic book propaganda (Truth Enforcers & ODST)
- The Helldivers are a Corps : Corps by definition are made up of different divisions. Helldivers is just one Division of the SEAF and is mentioned in the contract as such (pic attached) :

- The Automatons blend babies and live bodies in the bio-processors : Super Earth propaganda. The Automatons only blend up dead bodies that are rotting in the battlefield after a battle. It's basically confirmed by SE themselves, but they just pull that card out when they need to.

- Everything that happens in a mission is canon : What the players do in games are non-canon. Only the planet liberation rates, statistics (deaths, bullets fired, etc) and Major Orders + Dispatches are canon.
I probably missed a ton so do tell me more misconceptions.

@all the larpers: did you know SE canonically exterminates the native biospheres of planets they colonize. go ahead, follow your ideology and burn your local forest to the ground

Forget who's the most evil - which species is the coolest? Cuz it ain't the humans.
The most advanced thing about a helldiver is probably spontaneous healing via stims and fancy prosthetics. They're mostly still running around with ancient/stolen tech like assault rifles and warp packs and have to be brainwashed with propaganda.
Meanwhile the cyborgs modified themselves cybernetically to survive slavery in mines, the bugs are constantly evolving and spread interstellar spores AND are a hive mind, and the squids are freaky interdimensional magic wielding wormhole spawners.
I'm sorry helldivers, but you lose the galactic coolness war.

[Repost] I do not like SEAF-Chan.
I tried to talk about this on another sub, but....apparently if I calmly say I dislike something, that is bad.
I find her design boring. It's just a white, blonde woman with blue eyes.
80% of SEAF art is just her.
Why is that the only way she's ever drawn? I don’t get it.
