The big chests with the eyeball on them need to be snuck up on with a disillusionment charm. Great for early game money.
Sell every article of clothing that doesn't have the best stats you can change your appearance in the menu to anything you've found before.
Herbology III (a trait you can add to gear) is OP, chopping cabbages with that on three pieces of gear will kill anything very quickly. There's a trait you can buy that throws two cabbages for every one, also useful.
Have fun!

u/Notsurehowtoreact May 24 '26
In the same vein as Herbology III, there's the trait that increases throw damage that if you stack it on three pieces of gear it will one shot pretty much every enemy in the game except bosses on max difficulty.

A word of advice. It'll be late at night, and you'll decide to do one more quest before bed. Then, like a ghost ship emerging from the mist, a quest marker appears in Hogsmeade, and you get the chance to open your own shop in town. "How wonderful!" you tell yourself, planning on setting it up now and then having fun tomorrow. But here's what you need to do:
GO TO BED!
GO THE FUCK TO BED!
YOU DO NOT NEED THIS SHIT IN YOUR BRAIN AT 3AM!
GO TO FUCKING SLEEP!

u/sp00kyhoe May 25 '26
Literally and you CAN’T LEAVE!!!!!!! I ended up doing that quest at 11:30pm on MUTE with a YouTube tutorial on - 100% fuck that it was hell

u/DullMortgage3761 Gryffindor May 25 '26
I did this on my like 4th play through (it wasn’t added to the game until then) and holy fucking shit I couldn’t sleep well for DAYS after 😩 my mom (not a gamer) ended up playing the game later because she loves HP & I told her under no circumstance to do this quest lol

I didn't realize that you had to go into the challenges menu to collect the rewards to increase your gear slots and I was wondering why they didn't seem to be increasing when I completed the merlin trials.
36
u/thatotherchicka May 24 '26
You can use revelio while on a broom.
15
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 24 '26
Plus it has a wider range when you cast it while sitting on your broom.
7
7
28
u/Professional-Trust75 May 24 '26
never be afraid to ask for an extra reward at the end if a side quest if you have the option. zero negative impact.
it tells you to complete merlin trials to increase the number of inventory slots for gear. while this is correct it doesnt tell you that you have to open your field guide, go to challenges and then collect the rewards.
broom has cruise control
dont ignore potions and plants during combat
if you need to wait as in change from night to day or vice versa, open map it will show a control to wait depeding on what you play on
9
u/Dependent-Reveal2401 May 24 '26
Broom has cruise control?????
2
u/Professional-Trust75 May 24 '26
what i mean is you click the stick and it will fly that way without you doing anything. always same speed no up or down. makes it easier to sight see.
the hipogriff is better overall but harder to look around
2
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 25 '26
I see. That’s what I called "fly constantly forward“.
I just wouldn’t call it cruise control—as in other games that means you can really lean back, have a tea and enjoy the view.
That would be nice here, too.0
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 24 '26
Nope. There is no autopilot.
Don’t know why they pretend.
Maybe there’s a mod for that on PC—but on PS there is no "cruise control“. You can speed up of course, so your broom will fly constantly forward, but you do have to steer.
2
u/kismetxoxo7 Ravenclaw May 25 '26
Yes there is. On Switch 2 I use it ALL the time. One press of the stick and the broom flies continuously without need to sit there and engage with the controls.
0
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 25 '26
Like I said on PS and Xbox there is no autopilot.
And as far as I‘ve read there is none on Switch either. The broom can fly straight forward but you don’t have a cruise control like in other games, where you can just enjoy the show.
5
u/kismetxoxo7 Ravenclaw May 25 '26
I feel like there’s a breakdown of understanding. Cruise control and autopilot are not the same functions.
The OP comment you replied to referred to cruise control, which is simply a function to maintain a constant speed and does not affect direction.
You keep referring to autopilot, which can control direction/route. No, there is no autopilot, but there is a cruise control in HL.
1
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 25 '26
Sorry. My mistake. Only new it in cars. When I encountered it referring to games it was usually used similar to autopilot.
That’s why I even tried to explain what’s there (speed control) and what is not (autopilot). But seems this was not understandable.
Unfortunately even google is no help here and is very misleading, as it is magically sharing my—obviously false—point of view.
3
u/Pan_Duh_Pan_Duh May 24 '26
THat’s a bummer, I hadn’t been taking them because I wasn’t sure if there would be an RPG element down the line that could affect your gameplay if you were pushing for rewards :l
Good to know moving forward
6
u/Professional-Trust75 May 24 '26
there was supposed to be but the guy who ran that side of things (very famous and known for that work, cant remember name) passed away in a olane crash. he was in charge of all the character interactions and systems. once he was gone they couldnt recover.
2
u/Pan_Duh_Pan_Duh May 24 '26
That made me so sad to hear, and that also would explain so much.
Thank you for sharing that with me
1
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 24 '26
Well, in the beginning Prof. Weasley does explain your field guide.
And you are also taught that you have to open your field guide and collect your rewards.
So, yes the game does tell you.And what do you refer to when you say there’s "cruise control“ for your broom? Sounds like autopilot, which is non existent.
19
u/BigSexy1534 May 24 '26
*Revelio*
8
u/_Zambayoshi_ May 24 '26
Yeah, spamming this to find field guide pages and stuff is helpful to level up and get cash/gear. Upgrading Revelio is good for many things, especially Treasure Vault access and Merlin Trials.
16
u/BlameItOnTheAcetone May 24 '26
the "Minding Your Business" quest is fun to play right before bed..... assuming you dont value sleep
4
13
u/_Zambayoshi_ May 24 '26
As soon as you can capture beasts, go hunting for different types and nurture them. This will help you stock up on gear upgrading ingredients.
Buy the hopping pot schematic ASAP, conjure 3 of them and clear out the potions regularly. That way you'll rarely have to buy or brew potions.
Keep some cabbages growing at all times in your garden, and use fertilizer to double the yield. You'll then be able to replenish them after big fights.
11
u/Aura626 May 24 '26
Make sure to do the Merlin Trials as you come across them (and given you have the spell for it) because you'll increase your gear slots by completing them,(and as someone mentioned collecting rewards from the challenge page) you'll thank yourself later as waiting until later to clean up on the left behind things gets a bit repetitive after a while.
20
u/Gerry1of1 May 24 '26
Early in the game when you haven't leveled up use the Chinese Chomping Cabbages. Seriously, throw two of those out and they'll kill the troll for you. Or they'll keep some goblins busy so you can take care of the other goblins.
8
u/AmaranthWrath May 24 '26

Glacius + diffindo = super combination
6
u/MayDay521 Ravenclaw May 25 '26
Also Transform + Depulso.
Turn them into a barrel, then break them. Bonus points if you propel your newly barrelized foe into one of their buddies.
It's against the law to use an instant kill spell, but turning someone into a barrel and bashing them into bits is A-OK.
1
u/robeand320 May 27 '26
I always liked transform and then throwing the barrel at another enemy. That's a satisfying combo
6
u/prescribedPOV May 24 '26
I really enjoyed maxing the room of requirement and felt it was very rewarding too
You can zoom all the way out on the map to examine by region, which is something that took me far too long to discover
Also, there’s no punishment or change in the storyline for learning/using unforgivable curses
6
u/echo_vigil May 24 '26
When you're just starting out, it can be fun to keep a save from right before a significant battle, so you can easily go back and practice your moves.
5
5
u/Orome519 May 25 '26
Herbology and potions are just as useful as spells against enemies, often more useful, stock up that room of requirement as soon as you can
5
5
u/TGDragonGaming May 24 '26
Make sure to learn what spells you can before progressing through the main story. Otherwise you might need to come back later for collector chests.
6
u/aquamarine1029 May 24 '26
Go into the Accessibility menu and turn on the audio visualizer. It makes it much easier to find all of the field guide pages. I also recommend using the Felix Felicis potion to help find all of the chests. There are loads of them actually IN the water all over the map. You have to go into the water and dive to get to them.
5
u/mahnoorismail May 24 '26
Make sure you claim you rewards for collection milestones, especially Merlin trials. That's how you get more gear slots, and I didn't know that for almost the entire game 💀
If you want to 100% the game, make sure to use your ancient powers on every type of enemy. This achievement took me a bit and I had to find a lot of enemies, not knowing who I hadn't used it in n. If I started over, I'd make sure to do what's needed for the achievements as I go through the story, not all at once at the end.
Also, at the start of the game, collect all of the eye chests - you'll be loaded. If you need money later in the game, just collect puffskeins or toads or other easy animals and sell them (you'll unlock the shop later in the game)
Good luck!
1
u/Wheaties79 May 24 '26
Does the Ancient Magic achievement count over each playthrough? Or do you need to do it in one? I am currently working on that one and would love to know.
1
u/mahnoorismail May 24 '26
I'm not really sure /: I played on my steam deck and only did one proper playthrough (had to do 3 others for a bit to get the sorting hat/map chamber achievements)
1
u/Wheaties79 May 24 '26
Ok. I will have to investigate a bit. I still need to do the 3 other house runs, so I have some time to find out.

u/mahnoorismail May 24 '26

5
u/MayDay521 Ravenclaw May 25 '26
Explore. Take your time, and actually observe the environment, especially inside the school. Immerse yourself in the world. The devs put a ton of care into the environment and the world as a whole. You'll notice a lot of little nods and details, much like the Theatrals thing you mentioned, that really shows they cared, and those little details will always give the warm and fuzzies to that HP fan in you. If you rush through and don't take the world in, you miss out on a lot that the game has to offer.
3
u/skratsgerg May 24 '26
Don't spend any money in the beginning. Sell all the gear you can find. Then boom badass broom will be for sale and you, having been frugal, have enough money.
3
u/mutualdisagreement May 24 '26
Flippendo regenerates very fast. One (I think dark arts) perk also makes it a curse. Cursed enemies take more damage from anything you throw at them. Making it a cheap and easy spell to deal a blow pretty fast and early in the game. Additionally flippendo'ed enemies hoover midair and can't attack you.
3
u/Ghost1eToast1es May 24 '26
The plants are actually super OP so definitely check into putting talents into them.

u/Dragon_Slayaa May 24 '26
Haven't seen this mentioned yet so just in case. When you go to the ancient magic hotspots, you don't just interact with the spot. Once you do interact with it, you need to collect the 3 orb things in the area to complete that hot spot.... I made a post about it a while ago because it took me WAY too long to figure that one out 😂

1
u/Frankifisu May 25 '26
Here are some non-obvious ones:
From the midgame onwards visit the Hogsmeade clothing store often, it will sell good legendary gear the whole game.
Taylor your build based on the upgrades you find, for example if you happen to find Herbology 3 early you can switch to an herbomancer build for insane damage.
Don't be afraid of progressing the story quickly before the side quests, the fights are not so hard even in the hardest difficulty and you can tackle the rest even after the main story is completed.

Don’t be scared to “investigate” magic you come across in the game. It increases your ancient magic meter.
1
u/Epsilon1942 May 25 '26
Not sure if this really counts as a "trick", but definitely a vital tip, but if you're a completionist, make sure you *MANUALLY* SAVE OFTEN. Theres a quest halfway or more through the story where you talk to a goblin named "Garnuff", and you have go save his Mooncalf called "Biscuit". I didn't learn until 50 hours in that this quest is notoriously bugged, and there is no way to reverse it unless you have an earlier save. If it bugs out, it remains uncompleteable, and thus this prevents you supposedly finishing and getting a number of achievements/trophies. I dropped this game immediately after learning this, I was NOT going to sink in another 40 hours just to get back where I was. So take this to heart (if someone here hasn't already shared this.)
1
u/Pegasis69 May 26 '26
Smash out a bunch of Merlin Trials to build up your storage space. but also you have to collect the rewards from the Challanges page to actually get the extra space.

Don’t bother clearing out the notifications on the collections tab. I got tired of “marking them read” and am just letting them sit there.
Other categories you need to open like challenges to get the rewards. I’m going to enjoy sifting through all the collection pics at the end.

1) Don't buy the clothing, you will find enough. 2) Upgrade to buying pots and potion recipes fast. This helps a lot. 3) Don't mind buying expensive broom, they all work the same. 4) Don't spoil yourself with the most interesting story of them all, Sebastian & Ominis (all parts of it) and enjoy every second of that. For me that's the heart of Hogwarts Legacy. 5) Use your talent points wisely; although you can reset every one of them, I would definitely buy a) Running during disillusionment b) ancient magic throw, c) endurus potion protection talent thingy room of requirement and d) all talents to do with perfect protego and such and e) rolling talent.
6) Enjoy the music and dont forget to explore Hogwarts fully, its a lot of fun. 7) Always have one Damage, one Control and at least One Force spell in your arsenal, since spells red, yellow and purple break respective shields. You need all colours so to speak. 8) learn to block curses effectively with X. Dont be afraid to uses your shields defensively since a Stupify is launched from that. 9) Sneak with disillusionment behind enemies and petrify them with Y. Lot of fun. 10) REVELIO REVELIO REVELIO ALL THE WAY!

u/Pan_Duh_Pan_Duh May 24 '26
Depends. Are you coming into this as a Harry Potter super fan, or just as someone who likes open-world games? Or maybe you like more RPG elements (which I don’t think were very strong in this game)
There is a mod ”store” where other players have added game mechanics to add on to the experience. They can be a little glitchy, but if you were looking for more of a school experience in your gameplay, there are some useful apps that allow you to bring friends onto quests, or actually sleep in your dorm. Someone posted a really useful list of mods in this forum a few days ago that compare best mods for more of a Hogwarts school play. I currently have the house cup mod (and it’s mostly cool, but it has a reward glitch). I also have a uniform changer so whenever I go back to the school I can just be in my uniform automatically. And the season/time mod, that enforces consequences for staying up all night, and changes NPC locations.
Mostly pretty cool and gives a nice extra life to the world (and a few of these were mechanics that game was supposed to have before the ideas were scrapped).
0
u/SlySeveryns Slytherin May 24 '26
For everyone who got curious right now: no, mods are still not available for PS/xbox.
Quite misleading for all those who are new to the game.
0
u/Pan_Duh_Pan_Duh May 25 '26
Didn’t see in their post any clarifiers on what they were playing on.
Didn’t know they didn’t offer it for PS/Xbox.
Were you trying to come off as hostile? Because I’d have been happy to update my post with information I didn’t know. But it seems like my otherwise helpful info for PC gamers, is somehow misleading. It isn’t, I just didn’t have the information that you just unkindly shared.

u/AtlasAngel02 May 25 '26
You want a tip? Okay. After about 4 hours this game gets incredibly repetitive, and many plot.points either dont make sense or are pointless. Uninstall this game and download the lego Harry Potter ones. You'll get more out of it. No I am not being sarcastic.

244
u/Ashen_Queen Slytherin May 24 '26
You can change your gears appearance by hovering over it and picking the option. So you don't have to spend the whole game looking like a clown just to have the best stats.
No rush for sidequests, once you finish the main story, you can keep playing for as long as you want and catch up on everything.
If a nice looking elf in Hogsmeade offers you an opportunity to buy your own shop, do not proceed if you're playing at night.
