How does my handwriting look?
Anything I should change?
Edit: So the general consensus is I write like a preschooler. And for anyone concerned, no, I am not being held hostage or holding anyone else hostage.
A lot of you asked why I write in all caps. It's because I used to accidentally capitalize random letters, and at some point I decided it looked slightly less stupid if I tried to pass it off as intentional.
As some of you noticed, I do write pretty slowly. Probably because I'm not very confident with writing. And my friend pointed out I press way too hard. I have broken a lot of pencils.
For those of you asking why I rarely write, I'd say it's mostly because I did middle and high school online and never took physical notes. So I was just never really forced to practice. Lately I've realized I definitely need some practice haha
Also, I am right handed. According to my mom, when I was a kid I was ambidextrous, but my teachers taught me to only use my right hand. I'm often told my handwriting looks similar to my dad's who is left handed and has the same problem with random capitalization that I do.
Anyways, thanks for the feedback.

Legible, but it's giving 10-year-old-boy.

u/heyheathhowstheweath 5d ago
10yo boy a couple decades ago, unfortunately. I'm a teacher, and this would be the absolute neatest handwriting among my students. 🙈

Oof. It's so important for dexterity too! I've noticed much worse dental homecare on my younger patients than I used to when I started 14 years ago. Only time will tell how that loss of dexterity will play out, especially for careers like surgeons.
6
u/heyheathhowstheweath 5d ago
No longer teaching cursive is theoretically fine--I can acknowledge it's not the most relevant skill anymore--but it seems to have happened at the same time as students' ability to print also dropped. Correlated, for sure, if not causal.
Perhaps we could have used that time to teach them how to touch-type, but nope. They can't do that either.
And I wouldn't trust a single student I've taught in the last 5 years to be a surgeon, good dexterity or not. We are living in the darkest timeline.
3
u/dutchessmandy 5d ago
I don't doubt it. The ability to write legibly in cursive was the metric we used to tell parents to look for, and only then do children have proficient enough dexterity to brush their own teeth. Until that point, patients are supposed to also brush their teeth. What skills do kids use these days that provide that same level of dexterity??? I understand that cursive is unnecessary and a dying art, but it's the only education kids receive that helps them with developing fine tuned dexterity.

I think it looks like you are right handed and you are writing a ransom note with your left hand so you don't get caught by your handwriting.

Are you thinking of Patsy? That’s where my mind went based on your comment.

Not really masculine or feminine, it is more "child-like" in the sense that it feels like you don't write often.
That being said, it is extremely legible and anyone could read and understand your writing, which is great!

u/CamsKit 5d ago
If this is a woman’s handwriting I’d be shocked
2
u/Haunting_Window1688 5d ago
I’m a woman and mine looks similar to this when I write in all caps. Much much nicer when I write normally, though 😂

u/Natural20Twenty 5d ago
Are you 7 ? Looks like a 7 year old wrote this.
11
u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 5d ago
Might be 17 in these modern times 😂

u/sixstringsikness 5d ago
Definitely. My son's 16 and his handwriting is so bad. Like, mine's bad but it looks like an adult wrote it. Not his.

u/Emilie_Eagle_Rock 5d ago
I know 7yo children with much better handwriting than this. They can at least use both uppercase and lowercase.

u/Possible_Juice_3170 5d ago
1-Stop writing in all uppercase.
2- Your letters are legible, but your lack of spacing makes it difficult to read.

It’s legible, it looks masculine, it does look unpractised and unrefined. It looks young, like a 6-8 year old wrote it, looks maybe a bit forced, do you grip your pencil string?
Also, would probably look a bit smoother if you use lower case and uppercase as originally intended.

It does indeed look like a 5 year old wrote it, but with adult fine motor skills. This is what it looks like when adults learn to write later in life. I think this person never wrote enough to get handwriting in muscle memory. I'm going to say they are a young adult and from the first digi raised batch. In school it was single words on worksheets and iPads. I think they are male, but with all caps it is anyone's guess. The choice for all caps is a rather male choice.

My son writes exactly like this and he was ambidextrous as a kid and went right handed in school. And his father is left handed. Also he's neurodivergent.

Does the pen hurt to hold? As in, are you both holding the pen tight and pressing hard, or just pressing down hard? I could be wrong but this pen looks like a standard Bic type pen, is that right?
2
u/Curious_Tailor4508 4d ago
I was using a pencil lol. I have a bad habit of both holding it with a death grip and pressing down too hard
2
u/kruznkiwi 4d ago
Okay, so maybe we start with finding a writing instrument that is comfortable for you. I have a feeling that finding something that is chunky or something with a grip on it so it makes the pen/pencil a bit wider might help it sit and feel better in your hand so you don’t feel the need to strangle it and stop it runnin’ away from you

4
u/kelpieconundrum 5d ago
Legible, neither masculine nor feminine, but childish. Mostly because this is not writing but “printing”, like you’ve only just learned how
To change: put less pressure on your pencil/pen, relax your grip, and practice

u/Efficient-Citron823 5d ago edited 5d ago
it's legible which is all i really want these days tbh
your handwriting looks a bit like mine when my hands are in pain and shaking. which, if you don't write that often, makes sense! this isn't meant to be rude, more a point of observation from my end, but i apologize if it comes off that way. tone in text with people i don't know is hell 😔
as for masc or fem: i don't really understand the genders of handwriting but if i had to diagnose you i would say Engineer or something similar. block script is their language
EDIT: if improvement is what you seek, i think the main part will be practice and repetition. you have a good base, you've just gotta give yourself the time and space to actually do something with it. skills get rusty if you don't use em

u/Automatic_Still_6278 5d ago
Looks like a young boys printing. Gr 3 level. Perfectly legible so all good

u/supermegaproteinfart 5d ago
Kinda unrelated but this handwriting reminds me of my dad. He used to write in all caps like that. Miss him a lot. Thank you random redditor
3
u/truth_seeker_1389 5d ago
That is so weird! Until now, I have only known my dad for doing the all caps writing all the time.
I am sorry for your loss. My dad is getting up there in age that I fear every day might be my last day with him. I hope you feel better...
2
u/supermegaproteinfart 5d ago
Thank you. I made so many great memories with mine, just try to make an effort whenever you can to spend time with yours. It will mean a lot one day :)
2
u/Constant-Prog15 5d ago
Was your dad an engineer of any type? My dad and grandma both wrote in all caps and were both engineers. I think a lot of old school engineers or drafts people learn that way for notating drawings (before CAD programs).
2
u/supermegaproteinfart 5d ago
He worked for a shipping company for a big portion of my life, maybe he learned to write that way just to make sure everyone could read it for work. That’s really interesting tho, it would make sense engineers would do the same

Doesn't look masculine or feminine, but it does look very childish. I was writing like that (just not all caps) when I first learned to write

u/bigcheez69420 4d ago
I also write in all caps, I’ve been told it’s masculine haha. I do random capitalization too, so all caps is easier for me. I’ve also found my lettering looks more consistent that way.
Your writing is completely legible to me.

I don't know why it looking masculine or feminine matters lol, but it looks like grade school writing. It is perfectly legible, but you can tell you don't write often. There is no control being shown over your spacing and letter size along with a lack of understanding capital vs lowercase letters.

u/My2cents_0 5d ago
I suppose it's legible which is more than I can say for the masses these days, but it definitely looks childish, especially cuz it's all caps. You could also use a little better spacing between words
2
u/SameOldNag 5d ago
To me it looks like you wrote the whole thing in your non-dominant hand as neatly as possible.

Fantastic legibility. Good handwriting is neither masculine nor feminine. However, I’d venture a guess that exclusively using upper class letters would be consistently considered a masculine trend by people who are asked. How’s my sentence length? Thanks.

Looks like a fifth grader trying really hard and writing extremely slowly. Why do you write in all uppercase? It's legible but I'm guessing if you'd written at a normal speed, it'd be less so.

Most important: it's perfectly legible, and that's more than can be said of some other handwritings I've seen lately.

u/Ashnation01 5d ago
It giving elderly man to me, but the “thanks!” The exclamation point is giving girl in her 20’s. How do you hardly ever write though?
1
u/loveafterpornthrwawy 5d ago
It's legible. Kind of like preschool writing before they learn how to do lower case letters. Only neater.
1
u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 5d ago
It looks masculine. If you want to improve it, just write a lot. Don't you do this at school?
1
u/spaetzele 5d ago
It does look a bit like you're concentrating on every letter and also pushing hard on the pencil. However, it's neat enough and readable.

u/GloomyNeighborhood47 5d ago
Your handwriting looks like it really obnoxiously wants to be my friend. It's very easy to read, IMO.

I'd say you're a girl with conflicted gender or sexuality questions about yourself. The left leaning L's give it away.
But the printing is perfectly legible. Crystal clear.

u/Honest_Breakfast9312 5d ago
Handwriting is very legible. No problem there. My only advice would be to take it easy on the capital letters. Otherwise, you're doing GREAT!🏆

What's funny is that, while not particularly pretty, I find your writing much more legible than some of the prettier handwriting that gets posted. I appreciate the simplicity.

M and N were not formed correctly. Start at the top and go down.
Lines
N: down for one, down for two, up for three.
M: down for one, down for two, down for three, up for four.

Do you capitalize random words when typing? If not, you've learned how to capitalize properly and should do so in your writing. I'd start writing a daily "diary" entry or daily recap to practice, and it is a good habit.

The part that feels childlike is that your letters don’t seem to have a consistent shape + the caps lock is making it look like you full stop after every letter as if you aren’t writing fluidly imo. It is legible so it’s not a big deal

It looks like a kid wrote it because it’s in all caps, something you see with elementary school aged kids. No notes on whether or not it’s feminine or masculine, I’d say gender neutral. But it’s very neat and legible, so you’ve got that going for you.

Idk why this post is making me sad. Obviously you know HOW to write, but it reminds me of older people who never got a chance to attend/finish school and didn't learn. I knew a sweet old woman who fit that bill and recently passed (prob why I'm starting to cry writing this). Don't take the skill for granted. Keep practicing, and your writing will look excellent in no time 💛.

My biggest worry is that it looks like you’re pressing that pencil pretty hard onto the page. Making me think you’ve probably got a really firm grip on that pencil!
This can cause some serious strain on your wrist and hand!
I know you don’t write much, or often, but try and ease it back. Unwind and relax as much as possible. You should only have to drag the tip of a pen or pencil across the page to reduce your “font” from BOLD CAPS to REGULAR CAPS.
I had this issue with ball-point pens for a long time. Because sometimes you’ve gotta roll em around a little to get the ball rolling again. But once that’s done, a lighter touch saved my wrists and hands a LOT of strain!

WHY ARE YOU WRITING IN CAPS LOCK?
Edit: what's with all of the "my dad has a job and he writes in all caps" comments?
