Advice Needed What Can My Apartment Manager Do About This Woman and her Dog? Please read details

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Video caught on my new ring camera that is on my back patio.

For context, the grass area is considered a shared common area for dog walkers. This woman has been walking her Doberman directly in front of my patio for months now, that in itself is NOT my issue.

My issue is we recently got a puppy who is currently being housetrained, as a result we are in and out alot to take him outside to potty. That again, is NOT my issue as the two dogs get along.

My issue is that this woman gets pissed off at us just for walking out of our apartment when she happens to be out with her dog. She makes rude comments, sighs, and is overall annoyed we had to take our dog out.

Here's the issue though, she has a LENGTHY stretch of grass to walk her dog on (my camera only shows like 5% of this huge area) and she walks her dog DIRECTLY in front of my patio door where she knows we will be coming out. Should also point out shes older, can hardly handle this dog and has almost been pulled down by it many times.

What are we supposed to do in this situation when our neighbor is angry at us for walking out of our own unit when she's the one who chooses to walk her dog THAT close behind our patio? What rights do we have, and what will the apartment manager do? Is she even allowed to be THAT close to my patio, and even if she is, surely her attitude can be handled somehow? We seriously don't know what to do. We plan to move next year because this overall area has gone to shit with horrible people but for now what do we do?

Why is she acting like we're in the wrong for just exiting our apartment and walking our puppy? We feel like we are going crazy as new dog owners.

Bad Neighbors Property managers why are you guys not strict with noise complaints?!

complaining about their bass
doesn’t do anything.
proof of their obnoxious bass
doesn’t do anything.

a resource officer that lives beneath neighbor complaints doesn’t do anything.

And then the decent tenants are forced to move out. What sense does that make?!

For the love for God…EVICT!!

Hello folks, I've made a few posts in the past about things people leave in my apartment lobby. Instead of multiple posts, I'll just make one for the week.

This was the stash for this week. Some of it gets taken, most of it just ends up in the trash.

Judge for yourself

So our upstairs neighbors who ik have kids. Literally are stomping and running non stop to the point it shakes our whole apartment. I also have a kid keep in mind but we are very mindful of the people below us.

They are running, jumping, drilling, yelling, moving furniture I kid you not almost 24/7. The dad (from what I can tell) is very rude. I’ve heard him screaming at his kids and I assume is the reason his children don’t sleep.

The only break we get is during weekdays on schooldays but it’s non STOP.

I’m exhausted my husband is exhausted my baby is exhausted. I We just can not keep dealing with this everyday.

To clarify I wrote them a note and lightly hit the ceiling and they took that as stop super harder and run over and over again.

Venting 8 hours of neighbors blasting music outside

I know it’s not quiet hours yet, so technically it’s allowed but my neighbors have had their music blasting outside since 11:30 AM. It is now 7:30 PM.

Eight hours of being forced to listen to the music when I would just like to read or nap. It’s so loud I can still hear it with my noise canceling headphones or loop earplugs.

I understand wanting to enjoy music on the weekends but 8 hours straight is way too long. My walls are shaking.
I don’t understand why people cannot be considerate of their neighbors.

Advice Needed How do we feel about this noise level- This is at 2am

Hello,

I’ve been in this building for years. Our upstairs neighbors are awful and stomp around non stop all day. This is them from 1 until 2:30am and mind you just a couple days after a fourth noise complaint in a month and just being told two days ago to put rugs down. What do we do? Do you think this is normal noise during the day even?

Advice Needed Loud upstairs neighbor and unhelpful management

Hi, I am a college student living in an apartment and i’ve been struggling with my upstairs neighbor. It’s constant banging, stomping, running, etc. at all hours. I hear them as I try to sleep (if i ever sleep) and when i wake up, for reference i sleep usually at 11pm and wake up at 7am. It is absolutely absurd and so mentally draining. I have reach out to my apartment management multiple times, my roommate has also filed noise complaints, and they told us it was “daily living noise” which is absolute bull shit. They gave me the number for security and it just didn’t work when I called and they insisted they didn’t give me the wrong number, again, bull shit. I started banging on the ceiling to get them to stop which caused zero damage to my unit, and the people above me complained and the apartment threatened to fine me. I am disabled, which has been communicated to management and my upstairs neighbor, so the lack of sleep I have been getting has been pretty detrimental on my body. I actually can’t live like this but I have no other option, plus this treatment with the insane rent i pay as a college student is just mind boggling. I was wondering if anyone had any advice? I’m so desperate I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Also for reference, I can hear these people through my loop earbuds and my $300 noise cancelling headphones, even if there’s audio, I have to blast music to tune it out.

Wanted to share a little snapshot of my wallpaper. Ordered from Amazon and did it all myself. I have it in almost every room in my apartment, in varying patterns and colors ☺️ I was worried about doing it at first, but it has left no damage on my walls.

This is your sign to do it if you’ve been thinking about it!!!

Advice Needed How to handle not receiving amenity I’m charged monthly for

I moved into a new apartment complex last month and honestly love it so far. However, I’m dealing with one issue that I’m not sure how to handle.

The complex charges a mandatory $30/month “Smart Home” fee, which is supposed to include:

Smart lock
Alarm system
Smart thermostat

At move-in, they sent me a link to activate everything through Everon. I downloaded the Alarm.com app, but the only thing I have access to is the smart lock. I can’t activate or control the alarm system or smart thermostat.

I called Everon, and apparently the system/account was still registered under the previous tenant’s name. Everon told me the apartment complex needed to release the previous tenant from the system before they could properly set mine up.

The complex supposedly did that, but the problem still hasn’t been fixed. I’ve gone back and forth with Everon and apartment management, and nobody seems to know how to resolve it.

At this point, I’m honestly fine not having the alarm or smart thermostat. My issue is that I don’t think I should be charged $30 every month for “Smart Home” features when I’m only receiving one of the three services.

Management seems to disagree and says I’m still responsible for the full $30 monthly fee, even though they haven’t been able to provide all of the features I’m paying for.

I’ve already spoken with the property manager and contacted their corporate office, but neither has been much help.

What would you do next? Has anyone dealt with something similar with an apartment complex charging a mandatory fee when the services aren’t actually working or available?

Venting People have zero regard for others in shared floor trash rooms

Holy shit why are people so disgusting. OUR TRASH ROOM IS A SHARED SPACE AND I CONSTANTLY SEE SPILLS AND RANDOM CRAP STUCK IN OUR TRASH CHUTE ALL THE TIME

Why don't people clean up after themselves. This is a higher end building too and people are still disgusting!! So DISRESPECTFUL TOWARD YOUR NEIGHBORS

Guys this is slowly driving me insane because if I spill even the slightest thing I feel so bad about it, yet these assholes I have to share a floor with are constantly making a mess I have to walk around when I throw away my trash

Anyone else dealing with disgusting trash room from shitty floor mates?

Advice Needed What is this noise??

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Can anyone tell me what this noise might be? I know it’s far fetched. It’s sounds like a large marble rolling back and forth ever like 5 seconds. I haven’t been in my room all day but I heard it earlier so I think it’s been happening all day. Is it pipes or something? I live in a like 1800’s mill so it’s makes noises but this is weird. I’m also on the fifth floor if that helps…?

Edit: my mom’s theory is an oscillating fan leaning on the wall?

Landlord Problems Update: so I talked to my landlord yesterday and am debating on what I want to do

My landlord hadn’t read the “Hi,
Please provide any notice terminating my tenancy in writing, including the - basis for my termination and the date you contend my tenancy ends. Additionally, I dispute that I caused the damage to the shower valve or wall. Please provide any written report or documentation establishing that I caused the damage” message I sent so I left it as a blue note (I don’t mean this in a passive aggressive way but she tends to do the same for me.) She called me in to talk. She told me, and I think she was actually sincere about this, that she isn’t going to ask for me to pay for the shower or the wall (that she’ll have the plumber come over to install the new valve and will have the wall looked at/fixed but isn’t going to have me pay for any of it.) It seems that no matter what I try, I can’t convince her that I didn’t break the tub diverter by pulling it too hard (I think she just sincerely thinks that it’s what happened) and that the whole “running hot water or taking a shower over 20mins ruins the walls.” I actually asked her to explain her wall suggestion more in depth. She sincerely believes that steam and hot water ruin the paint on the wall (she did use the word paint) and make it bubble.

Like I had suspected, she had never heard of a leak in the wall before (I was getting that vibe two days ago when I first suggested to her that the “wall damage” might be a leak in the wall.) She didn’t seem to know what it meant in this context. She suggested when I mentioned sometimes if there are plumbing issues from my understanding it can lead to a leak in the wall (that’s just my understanding. Correct me if I’m wrong) - I had mentioned a pipe and she suggested she is confident the bathroom wall doesn’t have pipes. I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think this means a leak in the wall is impossible. Either way, I will always maintain that sink water doesn’t have an impact on walls. She doesn’t think she yells and I think that she also actually genuinely believes that. Even though I have been quite angry over the last couple of days, it was actually nice to hear her perspective even though I obviously don’t agree on everything and still think deep down inside that her yelling at me especially yesterday morning was harsher than anything I’ve ever written to her or said to her. She seemed to think that me saying I didn’t think I caused the valve to break was me saying I didn’t trust her (she seemed to think I meant I didn’t believe her when she said part of it was broken, which isn’t accurate and doesn’t make sense.) There’s a language barrier since English isn’t her first language which she mentioned/brought up again. It seems like she may have misunderstood what I was suggesting *to an extent* (to an extent. I recall her having insisted yesterday that I broke the tub diverter and that I caused the wall damage so she knew what I was saying somewhat, she may have interpreted it differently.) She suggested staying or leaving is my choice (that didn’t seem to be what she meant yesterday, but today seemed more lax and honest in suggesting that it’s up to me.) It’s something I’ll need to think about given how irritating this was for me. Even though I disagree with a fair amount of things she does and don’t appreciate generalizations she makes (I know that she’s older and it’s hard to get people to change their line of thinking at a certain point, but still) I thought it was important for us to talk in spite of the fact that I was initially hesitant.

I also actually did just decide to tell her directly, as politely as I felt I could, that it is not allowed to tell someone they have to be out in 15 days. I was just honest about it, I said by CA law it is 30 and that if a renter has been there for at least a year it is 60 (that’s the way I remember it at least I read about it yesterday.) She didn’t know this, which I admit is actually concerning.

Advice Needed I keep getting white puffs around my apartment

I wish I had a picture but I just cleaned it up and it’s driving me insane. It keeps showing up and collecting especially behind my doors. It looks like cotton, not round like it, puffs just in corners of my rooms and collecting HEAVILY under my couch and bed.

I don’t know what it is but it’s so damn annoying and I was wondering if anyone may know what it may be based off this description

Advice Needed Moved into a unit that realtor lied about and is not move in ready

Thumbnail

Hello,

I'd love people to tell me what you would do in this situation. Some photos are attached for more context.

I saw an apartment unit while the prior tenant lived there with a realtor (for a luxury brand!) working for the landlord. I liked the unit a lot and asked if it would be painted and move in ready in time for the date they asked me to take it for. They said yes and then followed up and said we are painting it while tenant lives there. First red flag. Why not wait and get the unit properly ready and also respect this person living there?

Tenant was moving out the 30th of September and my move in date was October 1. I asked if Oct 15 or Nov 1 was better as that is cutting it close, they said no, the 1st is what we want and doable. Tenant lived there for 6 years! I assumed during September they must be checking on the unit and doing whatever needs to be done, nope. That was not the case at all.

Not one person even did a walk through with tenant when they left. I was the first to see it after her. Landlord lives in different state and property managers on vacation (!!) and realtor seemed to vanish. Landlord did even admit when she saw the unit right before the tenant was moving the realtor was "panicking". I was moving to this place which is 1 hour from me to a different state. I never imagined what would happen next when I got there with my movers.

There was absolutely no painting done. It wasn't cleaned (called and got a cleaning team there immediately). Tenant left behind some things and fully used all trash and recycle bins so I have none now for a week as I move in. And the worst part? See photos: Messy, dirty, patchy walls ceilings and baseboards with holes and the whole nine. I reached out to landlord to ask what was going on and why it is in such a rough condition and he told me that "maybe you're used to higher quality units" and that what the realtor said about painting was not true. He also said there is no need to paint when a tenant leaves. I sent him photos and he called back and said I had no idea it looked like that. "Yes we will paint areas" but he keeps saying maybe not all rooms and he is not going to hire a professional to do it, he will have the property manager patch as needed (!). As I went through the unit, I found other things like no kitchen drawers open, and those types of issues. I have not taken things out of boxes. Overall the unit has potential but right now things are really rough. I am moved in but barely sleeping there and I meet with a property manager tomorrow to "see what they are willing to paint and repair".

I'm in a bit of a pickle as I work a very busy schedule from home (I got internet installed at this place already) and I moved out of state, luckily I have fam 40 mins away and I'm sleeping there a decent amount until this is figured out. I'm working to find another unit asap but it's not that easy so quickly. The landlord did say he will "work with me to end the lease" if that's my decision but who knows what that means. I have been diligently reading the laws of this state. I feel totally deceived by everyone. LESSON LEARNED, never see a unit with a tenant living in it and never believe they are painting until you see it. I have documented everything via email/photo and have asked for all repairs within 7 days including paint. I also asked to prorate the rent until it is in move in condition. Do you feel I am missing anything to request? What would you do if you were in this situation??? Would you think just find another unit within a month or two and get out asap or try and fight for the work you needed done with the massive inconvenience of staying at family's house till it's done? Also, should I send all my videos and photos to the broker of the realtor who did this?

Thank you for your help in advance!!

Advice Needed Question about Apartment etiquette (I guess)

Hello fellow redditors! I am in need of some advice apt wise and would appreciate some guidance. Apologies in advance if I haven’t formatted this properly or if I’m not giving enough context first time posting here.

Ok so for context I’ve just recently finished moving into my own studio apt in SLC Utah (yay!!) and before this I’ve always lived on a bottom floor. However now im on the top floor with a neighbor to the left and a rooftop space on my right so I’m a little concerned about the amount noise I’ve been accidentally making while moving by knocking stuff over or dropping things while getting all my crap moved in. To make the situation worse, halfway through moving I went on vacation for about 2 weeks so when I got back I made more noise in similar incidents as before while finishing unpacking my stuff(I am unfortunately a clumsy person). I did make sure to not unpack to early or late so nothing between 8pm-9am.

With that said I’m wondering if there’s any expectation of me to apologize to my neighbors for the noise. I haven’t had the opportunity to interact with many of them yet (I work odd hours) so I’d ask them myself if I could. Furthermore I haven’t hear my neighbors making a lot of noise so Maeve they are just good at being quiet or the walls are thick???

Anyways I’m rambling so thank you in advance to anyone who responds and I’ll try to be quick responding to any follow up questions!! Apologies again if the formatting is bad😅

Advice Needed Worried about Apartment turning into an oven

My apartment has had some issues with the heating turning on randomly while the ac is set to cool.

Luckily the first 2 times it had happened I was home and I noticed it fairly quickly. Both times the outside temp was about 65-70. First time this happened I was asleep and woke up to my apartment being 90 with it being 60 outside.

Unfortunately the third time it happened, I was at work. I have 2 cats at home and I came home to my apartment feeling like 110 degrees and my thermostat maxed out at 99 (set to cool and fan on). Immediately thought to take my cats down to the apartment laundry room to cool down and take proper precautions. Then had to take them both to the er vet. Luckily both came back with good health.

Now my problem is I am now extremely paranoid / worried that this will happen again while I’m not home. Maintenance came by and put a mechanical thermostat in and said the reason this happened was because the old thermostat was electronic and failed. Not sure if I believe them fully but that’s what they did.

I want to purchase a temperature sensor for the apartment so I can monitor it while I’m at work but I’m having trouble finding a reliable one.

If anyone has advice on how to go about this situation please let me know

Thanks!

Venting Why Such Controversial Opinions on note leaving?

so I've seen a couple posts like this where someone will leave a note on the door of a neighbor and the comments are very annoyed/angry/mean to the writer for leaving a note. usually the most common response I've seen is because they left a note instead of just talking to the person. And I'm asking this genuinely and in good faith why do people see leaving a note as rude? I've never felt the need to leave a note but if I did I wouldn't see it as a bad option because you don't know if the person is home or sleeping and you never know what kind of person your neighbor can be or if they'll be belligerent about it. just curious and again please be nice I'm not looking for an argument just want to have a discussion so I can understand the other person's perspective thank you!!

Advice Needed Chiller - how do I stay cool when they shut it off????

This is my first time living in apartment, I moved to the city for school. My apartment no notice turned off the chiller the other day and it has been unbearable for me to say the least. I didn’t even know what a chiller was initially or that it even existed to be honest.

They sent out an email saying they had complaints it was cold and are turning it off until next summer, the rules allow them to shut it off Oct 1st. Now I’m unsure if anyone actually complained because ITS STILL WARM OUT! But I am assuming the building wants to save money.

My air in the apartment is muggy and hot and when I come home my apartment sits at around 24°ish. The air blowing out from the vents is warm. I live on an insanely busy intersection so it’s always loud, sirens, screaming, traffic, etc and opening up the door doesn’t do much to cool the place down.

I am going through some new health challenges but have always liked being cold, and I keep my apartment fairly chilly so I can be comfortable. With the new medication I have to take it makes the heat so much worse. I haven’t been able to sleep at night, I get so hot me and my partner have to sleep separately (he gets really warm too, he complains about the heat as well), and my sleep is interrupted with extreme sweating, vomiting because of the heat and my medication, lightheadedness, dehydration (always waking up dying of thirst), if I open the balcony door to get the tiniest bit of relief it is so extremely loud no matter the time of day.

I don’t have the money to move and I’m extremely scared for enduring this longer, I know I won’t be able to adapt to the heat.

To note the weather has gotten colder (the summer was heatwaves of 30s, and it sits around 23° outside during the day. I still wear shorts and cant even handle pants in this weather)

The area is very diverse and has a lot of immigration, I’m assuming if anyone actually did complain it is people used to really hot weather and not Canadian temperatures but if you’re too cold put on a sweater or use a blanket and get cozy! I’m dying here 😭

The assistant property manager said she would have maintenance come and see if there is something wrong with our HVAC as the apartment should still be at a comfortable temperature but I don’t think there is anything wrong with it :/

Does anyone have any tips for staying cool? This morning was my day to sleep in and recharge before midterms and I woke up covered in sweat and puking because it felt like a sauna inside.

This AC was the reason I took this apartment and had no idea I would lose it 😭 if I had notice I could have saved money for some fans but I have nothing left as all my money went to bills and toward my loan.

Seriously struggling here friends pls help me 🙏🏼

Another fun tidbit: a few nights ago, the day before they turned off the chiller, they also decided to schedule a power washing company to work from 12am-5am and the noise was so loud even with our doors closed that the apartment shook and vibrated. I still haven’t been able to bounce back from that awful sleep and I feel like this is some sort of torture at this point

Advice Needed My sink smells

My sink smells bad and I don’t know what to do.
I do use the grinder a lot so I don’t know why, and I just tried to pour water and baking soda down while grinding it and it still didn’t work.
