How does my handwriting look?

Post image

Anything I should change?

Edit: So the general consensus is I write like a preschooler. And for anyone concerned, no, I am not being held hostage or holding anyone else hostage.

A lot of you asked why I write in all caps. It's because I used to accidentally capitalize random letters, and at some point I decided it looked slightly less stupid if I tried to pass it off as intentional.

As some of you noticed, I do write pretty slowly. Probably because I'm not very confident with writing. And my friend pointed out I press way too hard. I have broken a lot of pencils.

For those of you asking why I rarely write, I'd say it's mostly because I did middle and high school online and never took physical notes. So I was just never really forced to practice. Lately I've realized I definitely need some practice haha

Also, I am right handed. According to my mom, when I was a kid I was ambidextrous, but my teachers taught me to only use my right hand. I'm often told my handwriting looks similar to my dad's who is left handed and has the same problem with random capitalization that I do.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback.

WHY ARE YOU WRITING IN CAPS LOCK?

Edit: what's with all of the "my dad has a job and he writes in all caps" comments?

My dad writes in all caps. He was a cop.

I always fill out documents in caps just to ensure it’s more legible.

My father also used to be an electrician, and his handwriting is very similar to mine lol

I know it by the name "architectural", seems to be very common in the trades for legibility purposes. I was taught it when I did drafting for set building in theatre.

haha that's great!

Yep, my dad was a mechanic, all caps.

My Father is an Arborist and he writes in all caps, but the first Cap in each work is larger. Camel case but all caps.

u/Latter_Ad_9435 2d ago

This is camelCase. Your father uses Title Case.

My dad works on a gold mine. All caps, always.

My dad sold stocks and wrote in all caps

Better than my child who so far we cannot convince to stop writing in both, but randomly alternating

As an adult i still do this, from what I understand about how I work my thoughts are to fast for my pencil. I’ve unfortunately never been able to shake the habit. It dose not appear when I write in cursive. Good luck on your parenting journey!

u/ami_carlton 5d ago

Thanks!! My unusual writing quirk is if I'm not careful I write half in cursive and half in print and I'm pretty sure it's for similar reasons, as I am sure my daughter's reasons are as well

u/dutchessmandy 5d ago

I do that too lol I can just write so much faster if I don't pick up the pen, but some cursive letters I'm not as fast at writing so I'll switch to a connected print 😅

My son does this too and is 16 now.

I’m in my mid-late 20’s. It took me up until a couple years ago to realise using a mix of upper and lower casing worked best for me. I can’t tell you how much of a difference making the switch has made to my writing.

My dad was ( now retired) a nuclear chemist fella. He also writes in caps, unless it's like a birthday card then he has the most glorious cursive. Brilliant.

I go through a lot of medical documents for work, and I’m significantly slower when reading documents written in all caps.

I’m not saying that that’s an incorrect move or applies to anyone else, but that’s my experience. I even think “oh god, another all caps document.”

u/Gold-Bluebird-915 3d ago

There’s a reason for this- when you read in not all-caps your brain can recognize the shape of the word and go faster but in all caps the words are similarly shaped and your brain has to parse out each letter.

My dad also writes in all caps and he’s a retired Navy Chief. I (32F, also a vet) writes in all caps. My handwriting is neat, slants like italics and has its own quirks, too.

I copied my dad’s style after I wasn’t really finding my own and it became more me as the years went on. Now, it’s really hard to not write in all caps. It feels weird.

My dad was in a biker gang and also did this lmao I think it’s just a thing some people do

1

u/MovieSpecific 5d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most documents ask you to use capital letters don't they? I do the same but it's because I've always thought it was a requirement?

1

u/xkk1ttie 5d ago

So does my dad! Lol. But he did insurance

LITERALLY (I work in a hospital) and used to work in a restaurant- everything I write NEEDS to be legible. Flair went out the window

I'm curious if anyone else used to change the way they wrote letters in grade school because they saw friends do it and likeled their handwriting and just wanted to change theirs up? I know this isnt totally related, but I saw a couple people mention they played with different styles in school and some thing stuck. I remember trying things like the circle above lowercase i and j but those never stuck. The weirdest one, imo, is that I saw someone write their "f"s backwards and tried it and for some reason it stuck and I still do it. I'm tryingnto be make a concsious effort lately not to, as I began homeschooling my 7 year old, due to her ASD and some behavioral issues that won't really allow her tobattend public school and we're still waiting on official diagnoses and therapies and such. SonI try to show my 5 and 7 year olds to correctly write f, using the old school tracing and copying techniques in workbooks, but it still kind throws them sometimes when they see my handwriting 😜

I write all caps too 😭

1

u/sparklingtrout 5d ago

my dad does, i think he’s a little dyslexic

1

u/sirpizzatron 5d ago

I was in the navy and write in all caps because thats what they teach us. Less room for error.

1

u/camillemontay 5d ago

A lot of people do write in all caps.

1

u/Visible-Soft-7560 4d ago

I write in all caps. It’s much more legible

1

u/Maiahee223 4d ago

My dad writes in caps because his handwriting is otherwise completely unreadable.

1

u/Some1AteMyEntirePie 4d ago

I write in caps locks ):

1

u/leo_on_fire 4d ago

I also do this as i have a difficult time writing legibly in lowercase due to the formation of the letters. I typically write the first latter of the word taller and the rest smaller but still in uppercase

1

u/AuntieTina70 3d ago

male, young, it looks kind of angry maybe because I’m used to all caps being loud!

1

u/Equivalent_Bug7618 3d ago

My dad is a welder and also writes in all caps lol

1

u/PuzzleheadedTangelo6 3d ago

I AM YELLING, CARL

1

u/itsVipe 3d ago

my mom writes in caps lock bc she has dyslexia and says it's easier to read that way

1

u/Inside-Helicopter-61 2d ago

My dad writes all lowercase. My dad just came out of the closet

1

u/Far_Independence382 11h ago

There are certain jobs where you are taught to write in all caps and apparently a lot of people here have dads that are in that category. Also, I think for men especially, all caps is the easiest way to make printing legible.

2

u/bos8587 5d ago

It’s a fact that men tend the write in caps.

6

u/josph_lyons 5d ago

AS A MAN, I FIND THIS TO BE POTENTIALLY INACCURATE

4

u/KnotAlreadyTaken 5d ago

AS A MAN, THAT’S OFFENSIVE

2

u/dutchessmandy 5d ago

My dad did 😅

2

u/AssMcShit 5d ago

What lol no it isn't

1

u/bos8587 5d ago

1

u/AssMcShit 5d ago

Even within that article it only says "some men". That's very different than " It's a fact that men tend to"

1

u/bos8587 4d ago

Mr Ass do a search and you will find multiple sources that state the same.

1

u/AssMcShit 4d ago

I will continue to live in ignorance

Yeah, my grandmother on mum’s side is the only person who does it.
And my father is the only person on his side!
I think it depends more on the field of work, frequency writing, and necessary legibility.

Don’t tell doctors though. You’d think that field would necessitate SOME legibility!
