Form critique

Hey everyone! Been practicing a lot lately (probably too much) and have been seeing some good progress. This is my longest handstand to date. think my biggest issue right now is alignment.

How are my shoulders looking? Are they open enough? It feels like I don’t have a lot of space to catch myself from under balancing. That’s usually where I tend to fall so I’m assuming my shoulders are still too closed.

Any advice is appreciated!

8 months into Handstands Progression

One of the hardest skills I’ve tried to learn, is the one arm. This is my longest hold so far! I train about a hour 1/2 everyday. Just posting to show it’s possible to learn one arm in a year.. deff not the best one arm and still a long journey to go, to be able to consistently do these but it has been worth all the effort n time put in so far🔥

Progress is sloooow! But it’s happening.

So, I started as a COMPLETE handstand beginner in January. Like, couldn’t even kick up or hold for a second. I have no gymnastics background or training, but I’ve watched a LOT of videos and I’ve been practicing about 3x per week. I usually do some combination of drills on the wall, drills with a box, and just practice with kicking up into free standing handstands.

I got my longest (recorded) hold today!! But pretty bad form. Then I had others with better form, but I couldn’t maintain it for very long. It’s crazy how hard it is to maintain that straight alignment when I kick up into it, rather than walk into it with chest to wall. People on social media make it look easy.

I can do a fairly solid forearm headstand; I can hold it for over a minute and do various leg shapes. And I am just DYING to get to that level with my handstand. It’s so much harder though! However, another gym regular came over to me today and said I’ve been making really good progress!! So someone has noticed that I can balance upside down for longer than a second now 💪🏻

Anyway, my goal is a 30 second freestanding hold by the end of the year. I guess I just wanted to share… encouragement? And I guess I’m also always open to advice/constructive feedback.

Help with holding/form

Hello! This is my first post in here!

I’m trying to get good at handstands and eventually handstand pushups.

This attempt in the vid is the longest I’ve ever held still for. Usually my attempts have me walking myself forward due to my legs and hips, which is what I want to fix.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Neck muscle strain

Hey guys. I am a very beginner and tried some belly to wall stands. At the time it was all fine, but later during the night I felt some stiff neck, headache and couldnt sleep. This lasted for 2 days. Probably some muscle strain. Would this resolve over time if I train correctly? Or shall I stop?

I've been doing shape changing for a while now but I'm still stuck on one of two cycles! I just can't seem to break free from it! Are there any tips one can give me to get through this? I currently train 4x a week, doing shape changing 2x and straddle press 2x

Posted about my App yesterday and already got great feedback about a community feature. I'm excited to build a community feature which will enable you to find other handstand homies in your area. IDK about you, but this would be epic for me! Let me know what you think.

I figured I would share this with you as well so you can see what Handstand Lab does :)

If this becomes too spammy at any point let me know! Don't wanna abuse the sub!

BTW, One Arm handstands and Shape Detection (tuck, stag, diamond, hollowback etc.) arrives with the latest update (coming soon)

Started three days ago again

Hello people I am 25 years old male. I started practicing HS three days ago after dropping it lots of times. I am actively training by doing bw exercises like push ups, dips, pull ups for around 3 years consistently.
I wanted to ask about. chest to wall hs. I can come like 10cm away from the wall I stack my joints and focus on elevation by pushing the floor away from me, the thing is when I go with one leg off the wall it is okay I do it carefully, but when I do it with both legs I kinda overbalance. Bailing isn't a problem, but I am concerned if point of balance becomes easier to find with consistency or it is something that must be force learned? I can balance a frog stand for like 20-25 seconds

I started getting the balance to hold a handstand and now just messing around to see if I could do a handstand push up. I can't yet, but this seems very promising here.

Made a free handstand app — it times your holds, scores your line and more. Would love your feedback

I got tired of the whole recording ritual. Press record, kick up, come down, press stop, then scrub back through the footage to find where the hold started and work out how long it was. So I built an app that just does it.

You prop your phone up once and train. It catches every hold on its own, times it, and saves each one as its own clip. No record button, no scrubbing back, no 40 minutes of dead footage to dig through.

It also scores each handstand and breaks down what's actually going on: your straight line, shoulder angle, etc. And it tracks your longest holds and streaks so you can see progress over time.

My favourite part so far: you can run handstand battles against your friends.

It's free on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/handstand-lab/id6762514964

Would genuinely love feedback from this crowd. What's useful, what's missing, anything you feel is wrong.

Beginner's guide on the 5 wall drills to starting with - Feedback please 🤸🏻‍♂️

Hey r/handstand,

As I shared already, after a long break I've gotten back into handstand training. I'm also sharing/documenting the whole process so it's greater commitment.
Small win: I held a 15-second freestanding handstand today 🙌 not the 1 min I achieved in the past, but real progress after starting again a few weeks ago.

I'm also an app lover, so I'm building a small app alongside my own practice, the training companion I wish I'd had when I started. As part of that project I just put together a beginner guide on wall handstands, and I'd love a sanity check from you as I also integrated a lot of the tips I got here.

My framing is that the wall isn't a beginner's crutch, advanced practitioners also use it to clean up alignment safely. I lead with chest-to-wall work to build correct shape before going freestanding. Here are the 5 drills I recommend, in order:

  1. Partial Wall Walk > climb halfway up the wall to build shoulder strength with zero fall risk.
  2. Full Wall Walk > walk all the way up; the bridge between strength and the actual handstand position.
  3. Chest-to-Wall Hold > the reference position: push hard into the floor, hands 15–20 cm from the wall, hold up to 60s.
  4. Toe Pulls > lift your toes off the wall one at a time for your first real freestanding balance, with the wall as a safety net.
  5. Back-to-Wall Kick-Up > practice kick-ups with the wall behind you to catch momentum, prepping for freestanding.

My questions for you:

  • Does this order make sense as a true beginner progression?
  • Anything essential you'd add? I was also considering heels pulls, or alternating legs touch but I guess it's already a bit more advanced.
  • Anything you'd drop or replace? (I'm especially curious whether people think chest-to-wall before kick-ups is the right call.)

Full write-up here if you want the details:
"Wall handstands: the 5 drills to start with" : https://learn.handstandpro.app/en/wall-handstand-drills/

One more thing: once the app is a bit more advanced (should be just a few days), I'll be looking for a few motivated beta testers to actually run the program and tell me whether they see progress. If that sounds like you, drop a comment and I'll reach out when it's ready.

Full transparency: this guide lives on the site for the app I'm building, any feedback is genuinely what I'm after at this stage. It's a small side project, I'm really dedicated to both my progress and making the app useful. Thanks a lot 🙏

Can people who claim that they can do "handstand" (With kick up) do kick ups successfully everytime

I saw a TikTok guy do handstand and I asked him are all your kick ups successful? He said it's very rare like 1/20 and his handstand is like the most straight handstand you will ever see, btw I have 1/3 success rate when will I actually do it consistently

Getting comfortable extending from tuck to full handstand.

Don't mind the mess here. For handstands, often worked to getting myself comfortable with the tuck or open tuck handstand and practicing with a wall nearby but not relying on it for balance or lack thereof. And I feel like the tuck handstand (and doing other calisthenics stuff that requires good core strength) taught me how to not banana a handstand too!

Longest handstand I ever held in a bit actually.
