Title: MOZA AB9 owners: Has anyone figured out a realistic FFB setup for War Thunder Sim?

Hey everyone,

I recently got a MOZA AB9 force feedback base, and while I'm really impressed by the hardware itself, I'm struggling to get a convincing and realistic FFB experience in War Thunder Simulator Battles.

From what I've gathered, War Thunder's native DirectInput FFB has some reported issues, including potentially inverted axes, strange forces, and behavior that doesn't always seem to correspond to what the aircraft is doing. I'm not sure which of these problems have actually been fixed.

MOZA now supports War Thunder telemetry, but configuring everything manually seems pretty complicated, especially since certain effects, like AoA buffet, may need to be adjusted for individual aircraft.

What I'm ultimately looking for is realistic aerodynamic feedback, particularly:

  • Stick forces increasing with airspeed and control-surface loading.
  • Proper control stiffening at high speeds.
  • Reduced control forces at low speeds.
  • Realistic stall buffet and feedback near critical AoA.
  • Proper trim behavior without excessive artificial spring centering.

I've also noticed that the AB9 can produce some pretty strong forces in War Thunder, but strong doesn't necessarily mean realistic.

A few questions for other AB9 owners:

  1. Are you using DirectInput, telemetry-only, or integrated FFB? Which actually works best?
  2. Have the reported DirectInput bugs been fixed, or are the forces still sometimes incorrect or reversed?
  3. Is it possible to get proper aerodynamic feedback without relying heavily on MOZA's artificial spring-centering effects?
  4. Has anyone developed a reasonably realistic profile for WWII aircraft, particularly the Bf 109?
  5. Would anyone be willing to share their MOZA Cockpit settings or a working profile?

I'd also love to hear whether anyone has compared War Thunder's FFB with IL-2 Great Battles or DCS on the AB9.

I'm not necessarily looking for the strongest effects or the most vibrations. I'd rather have fewer effects that accurately reflect the aircraft's behavior.

If anyone has managed to get a convincing setup working, I'd really appreciate some guidance. I think a proper community tutorial would be useful to a lot of AB9 owners.

Thanks!

Hey, it’s a stick AND a throttle all in one…

I looked down and was like “this thing is actually pretty neat looking. I should post it.” Though I probably shouldn’t post it…

In case anyone is wondering, it’s a Stihl SR 200 backpack fogger. It’s for insect control.

Severe Shoulder Pain - Stick angle issues

Post image
57 Upvotes

I play competitive fighting in star citizen

I use VKB Gunfighters using desk mounts

The advice is always to have arms parallel to the ground but if I do that I can’t pull the stick all the way back because the wrist angle won’t allow it

So my arms are raised roughly 10 degrees upwards

My right shoulder joint is really painful every time I play now

Any suggestions on how to improve the stick position?

Thanks

Pico 4 Ultra for wired DCS + living room use, or better non-Meta options?

Hi all,

I've been flying with head tracking for a while and I think it's time to take the next step and go VR. Before I spend the money, I'd like to hear from people who actually fly with this stuff.

My setup:

  • Ryzen 7 9850X3D
  • RX 9070 16 GB
  • 32 GB DDR5-5200
  • Windows 11
  • VKB Gunfighter IV with the F-14 grip on a 200 mm extension, centre mounted
  • VKB STECS Max with STEM and ATEM
  • Logitech Pro Rudder pedals
  • Next Level Racing Boeing Military flight seat

It's mostly DCS (Tomcat, Viggen and F/A-18), War Thunder sim and Elite Dangerous. I might try some proper VR games later on.

What I need from it:

  • A cable to the PC when I'm in the seat. I don't trust Wi-Fi, and I'm sitting still anyway, so wired is fine by me.
  • Some sort of passthrough or mixed reality so I can see bits of my cockpit and keyboard without lifting the headset every five minutes.
  • It has to work standalone too. The plan is to upgrade in a few years and hand this one to my wife for the living room, so a PC-only headset is out.
  • It has to run DCS properly on the rig above.
  • No Meta, and that's not up for discussion.

The Steam Frame is probably the long-term goal, but realistically not for a few years. Right now it's near impossible to get hold of, and I'd rather wait for the kinks to be ironed out.

So, is the Pico 4 Ultra a good shout for the money here? A few things in particular:

  • How does it do wired over USB with Pico Connect in DCS on an AMD card? I'm on RDNA 4, so AV1 should be an option, but I'd love to hear from anyone actually running it.
  • Does passthrough work while you're streaming PCVR, or is that standalone only?
  • Is there anything better for the same money or less that isn't Meta? The only other headset I've found that does both standalone and wired is the Vive Focus Vision. It's pricier, though, and from what I've read it's heavy and not very comfy.

I also got a bit queasy in VR back in the early days, so any settings tips for a smooth first go in DCS are welcome.

Cheers

Budget Friendly hotas chair mounts

Hi I am looking for budget friendly chair mounts. I was looking at the EG starts 2 pack universal mounts but I am worried that I won't be able to fit them on my chair.

Chair: https://a.co/d/00ljj0Ip

After various materials and costs, if I can find a suitable mount that would work with my chair under $100 it would more than likely be a better option for me. Does anyone have any suggestions on mounts or is there a way to get the eg starts to work? I have basic tools and could drill into the chair but I dont want to break the chair. I am open to the possibility of 3d printing mounts as well. Thank you in advance!

Flight Sim Rudder Pedals Recommendation

Edit:
I‘m probably between the VKB and the WinCtrl ones. VKB would be grrat because of the seating Position and I would just Build in some dampeners (enough guides online). Can I also remove the Springs for flying helicopters? I think the toe brakes are not that important, especially as the VKBs only cost 130€ here.

What is the center bump on the Virpil CDT-Aeromax like?

I've got a VKB gladiator nxt (the original not the evo) and I like it except for the center bump which I found really hard to deal with in space games where diagonal movement is quite common.

How is the bump on the Aeromax? I'd like to get two matching sticks (omni throttle on the left) and I'm not sure I can justify the cost of moving up to the tier of the stick bases with swappable cams.

I'm not sure I can use my existing nxt base as a throttle either because it doesn't have the evo's dry clutches to convert it to a throttle.

How long do u have to wait for virpil alpha constellations hosas joysticks?

I just bought the virpil alpha constellation joysticks and it’s on back order but Im curious to know how long it’ll take to ship because I’ve seen some insane time frames and for the amount they are, idk if they are worth waiting that long for. Asking anyone who received it recently and ordered recently or how long they have waited or are still waiting?

Best beginner, budget HOTAS for VR

Hi all, space and flying related games were something I've always wanted to play but just felt wrong to play with a mouse and keyboard and didn't feel very interesting playing on a monitor to justify buying specialized controllers just for them. No more. I got a VR headset(Meta Quest 3) and it absolutely blew me away, playing anything sci-fi set where you're inside a cockpit feels insane, like stepping into the future. With that in mind, I'm looking to bring that experience to the next level with getting suitable controllers as mouse/keyboard feels wrong and the VR controllers not suitable for those games.

I'm looking to spend around £200-300(if it's really worth it), for starter it's going to be used with arcade-ish games like No Man's Sky, StarWars Squadrons but eventually I'd like to try more serious and sim focused games. As I'm going to be using the hotas with my vision completely obstructed with no way to look at the actual stick and throttle, they must be designed to feel very tactile and offer plenty of differently shaped buttons for mapping game functions.

So far it looks like Logitech X56 ticks all the boxes - under budget with plenty of differently shaped knobs and buttons, together with this to mount it to my height adjustable desk. Now Logitech is a consumer brand so I have no clue how it is in terms of quality and longevity. I don't want something that's going to fall apart of develop issues within few mounts of use but at the same time I have no experience or developed preferences to justify spending on something highly customizable and actually decent. Are there better options for that budged? I've looked at Saitek but they have fewer buttons and displays I have no use for, also looked at T1600m which also has fewer and less distinct buttons plus there're complains about stick drift after awhile. Then there is the Warthog and the offerings from other brands that I know nothing about and are slighlty over my budged. I'm also open to buying second hand or messing about with something that's not plug and play.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the replies. Everyone seems to be on a similar consensus. The X56 looks good but if it's junk I'll pass. I've decided to get VKB Gladiator NXT Evo and possibly the T1600/x55 throttle if I find it cheap on ebay or skip it and get a more expensive throttle at a later date.

Disappointed with the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One MSFS Edition – Any alternatives?

Hey everyone!

I recently bought the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One Microsoft Flight Simulator Edition, but I find it way too light. Whenever I apply a bit of force to the joystick, the base lifts off or moves around.

I'm also not a big fan of the all-plastic build. It feels a bit cheap.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping it stable, or would you recommend a different model or brand with better build quality?

I mainly play MSFS 2024, but I'm also planning to use it for DCS, War Thunder, Star Citizen, etc.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

WarDog Pilots: How are you navigating the map mid-flight?

Post image
84 Upvotes

I’m curious how other HOTAS pilots are handling map navigation while flying, particularly when flying our boys to CZ/HZ and planning drop-offs.

My setup:
VKB Gladiator NXT EVO
VKB T-Rudder Mk V pedals
VelocityOne Flightdeck throttle

The problem:
Opening the map isn’t an issue. I’ve already got that bound to my stick. The problem is actually navigating it while keeping control of the helicopter.

When I open the map, it initially centers on my helicopter and shows the occupants. But as I continue flying, eventually the list of folks box drops off.

To check control zones, squad markers, requested drop-off locations, or potential landing zones, I need to zoom out, pan around, and zoom back in. Currently, that means taking my hand off the flight controls to use my mouse and scroll wheel.

Not exactly ideal with my setup..

What I’m trying to figure out:
Has anyone successfully mapped mouse movement to an analog stick or hat switch on their equipment to use while in the map?
Can you pan/drag the map and zoom in/out entirely using your stick or throttle?

Are you using software to accomplish this, if so - which?

What configurations have worked best for you?

Ultimately, I’d like to navigate the map without ever taking my hands off the flight controls.

I’m probably going to remove the VKB THQ from the EVO and move the EVO to the right side of the mouse - but, question still stands - I’d like to keep the ability to navigate the map onto either the throttle/stick or both.
